January 8, 2020, Wednesday - Reading: Katie Shireen Assef at Milkweed Editions

Time: 7:00 p.m.

Location: Milkweed Books, 1011 Washington Ave S

Reading: Katie Shireen Assef

Milkweed Books welcomes author and translator Katie Shireen Assef for a reading from Black Forest (Valérie Mréjen, Deep Vellum) in the bookstore.

FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

A man decides he is old enough. A woman returns early from a lovers' retreat to a bottle of pills at home. And how should you explain the nuances of contemporary Paris to your mother, twenty – five years dead? Valérie Mréjen's Black Forest is a book of mourning that isn't morbid or sentimental, but rather an elegant and wryly humorous brace against the void. With a paradoxically detached intimacy, Mréjen follows death's dark and twisted path through the lives it touches, wringing out every possible meaning—or non–meaning— along the way. A writer at the height of her career who draws comparisons to Georges Perec and Nathalie Sarraute, Mréjen has cemented her status as an auteur with a singular voice, guiding us through the Black Forest of ghosts that populate her subconscious.

January 6, 2020, Monday - Ultimate Intro to Wine: Winespeak at North Loop Wine

Time: 6:30p - 8:30p

Location: North Loop Wine and Spirits, 218 Washington Ave N

Ultimate Intro to Wine: Winespeak

Our most popular class and the best wine fundamentals class out there! ULTIMATE INTRO TO WINE: "WINESPEAK" Presented by Certified Sommelier Jason Kallsen The fundamentals of wine knowledge intimidate many, for we are talking about a subjective subject (smell and taste) while at the same time trying to understand why many give it a numerical score (90 points! Ah! Hedonistic fruit bomb!). Between varietals, regions, countries, aromas, flavors, and about a million different opinions out there, it's no wonder many see the world of wine as a tornado of confusion. No more! Come to the Winespeak class, presented by Jason Kallsen. It is here that you will learn there is no single best 'tasting system' out there. Instead, you will learn how YOU taste and perceive wine, and how an understanding of wine can be influenced to a great degree on the context in which you have it (including a discussion on food and wine pairings).

The core of the class is tasting through six wines while deciphering the key terms that wine professionals use to discuss wine. By learning these nine words and the way they are used in the wine world, you can then describe any wine from anywhere in the world, for the rest of your life! This is the best wine class available to help you learn about this complex subject in a fun, entertaining, and unforgettable way. And, y ou will never again be nervous when somebody hands you a glass of wine and asks "So what do you think of that?" *** Info on your instructor, plus terms and conditions Jason Kallsen is Minnesota's most experienced wine educator, with over two decades of experience teaching the subject. A Certifed Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers, plus a Certified Specialist of Wine with the Society of Wine Educators, Jason has taught over 40,000 students since starting in the wine business in the early 1990s. He's appeared in local, national, and international media including pairing wine with classical music on an interationally broadcasted edition of Performance Today. His style is well known to be accurate but unpretentious, detailed yet not overwhelming.

Featuring: Denim on Denim, Jenna Jean Alstad, Kayla Schiltgen Dance, and Mario Pérez

Denim on Denim is a long-form improv group from Minneapolis, comprised of several University of Minnesota graduates who are all generally silly/goofy human beings, and not to be trusted.

Jenna Alstad will present her play, The Girl that Grew Up Out of the Ground. Written in the fall of 2018, the piece explores relationships surrounding motherhood, childhood, and the coming of age journeys of those who have identified as daughters. Featured artists: Claire Loveall, Agustina Borre, Madeline Larson, Callie Tovar, Ayla Carbonell, and Tyanna Gross.

Kayla Schiltgen Dance is presenting work from Short Haul and Shantyman which are part of a project exploring the lost art form of sea shanties, and human-powered, community-based work. The project is inspired by Kayla’s interest in how work was done throughout history as well as a curiosity about how and why we work the way we do today and its impact on us. These are two sections of an in-progress, evening length work. Featured artists: Kayla Schiltgen, Haley Jensen, Crystal Secor, Stepheni Hubert, and Madelyn Schwartz.

Accompanied by Wesley Frye, Mario Pérez will be performing the following arias: "Il mio tesoro" from Don Giovanni by Mozart, "Fra poco a me ricovero" from Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti, "Ah, la paterna mano" from Macbeth by Verdi, and "Recondita armonia" from Tosca by Puccini. He is performing these pieces as "works in progress" as he tries to find his new voice in these larger roles for opera auditions.

January 5, 2020, Sunday - Shaamya - Of Equality at The Southern

Time: 2 pm

Location: Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Ave. S.

Shaamya - Of Equality

Inspired by the poetry of writer and activist Kazi Nazrul Islam (1899-1976), Shaamya - Of Equality attempts to draw parallels between the experiences of today's oppressed communities with those expressed by Nazrul Islam in his time. Using a mixture of classical Indian dance choreographed by KDT artistic director Rita Mustaphi, original songs composed by musician J.D. Steele, and poetry by artist and playwright Ifrah Mansour, Of Equality shows that Nazrul Islam's ideas about countering oppression with peace, justice and equality remain relevant today.

This is a work-in-progress performance, with a full production coming later in 2020.

$10 general admission; $5 youth/student. Pay-what-you-can option available at-the-door.

January 5, 2020, Sunday - Mixtape Yoga: The Best of at A-Mill Artist Lofts

Time: 10 AM – 11:15 AM

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, 315 SE Main Street

Mixtape Yoga: The Best of

One of the first things that happens when music enters our brains is the triggering of pleasure centers that release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that makes you feel happy. This response is so quick, the brain can even anticipate the most pleasurable peaks in familiar music and prime itself with an early dopamine rush.

Mixtape Yoga combines the pleasure triggers of classic sit-on-your-bed-with-the-headphones-on comfort music with the the mindfulness of a vinyasa flow yoga class.

For this Mixtape Yoga, we are going to do something new. Instead of featuring a specific artist, I'm encouraging everyone to rifle through their mental iPod Shuffle, and find 1-3 songs that you think would be perfect for a yoga class. I will then take, at least, one of those songs and put it into our 75-minute yoga class soundtrack.

3 Easy Steps to Register:
1. Figure out if the date works, if not, cancel your previous plans.
2. Contemplate your ideal yoga contemporary song Mt. Rushmore. You don't have to provide song ideas to attend this class.
3. Email/Text said songs to me.
4. Venmo your payment to me, or let me know of another way in which you are thinking of paying (maybe with seashells, or donuts?)
5. Mark it on your calendar, and begin to count the days.

LOCATION: A-Mill Artist Lofts, 315 SE Main St, Minneapolis
COST: $15
