November 29, 2016, Tuesday - Hennepin County Budget (Truth in Taxation) Meeting

Hennepin County will hold a public meeting on the proposed 2017 budget and property tax levy – commonly called the Truth in Taxation meeting – at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29. The meeting location is the County Board Room on the 24th floor of the Hennepin County Government Center, at 300 S. Sixth Street in downtown Minneapolis.

The county proposes a 2017 budget of $1.9 billion – a decrease of 2.57 percent, from the 2016 adjusted budget. It proposes a property tax levy of $759.4 million – an increase of $32.6 million, or 4.49 percent, from the net property tax levy in 2016.

The budgets and levies for the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority and Hennepin County Housing and Redevelopment Authority also will be discussed at the meeting.

The next Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association (DMNA) Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 28, from 5:45 pm to 8:00 pm, at St. Olaf Catholic Church - 215 S. 8th Street.  Please note that this is a change from our regular meeting day of the third Monday of the month.  The board meeting agenda will be posted on the DMNA Website, approximately five days before the meeting.

The DMNA Board will review one Land Use item, due to the timing of the application:
• Lumber Exchange Building (Exchange Nightclub) - Heritage Preservation Commission Certificate of Appropriateness application that includes four items, presented by Chuck Levin, Chuck Levin Architects and nightclub owner Deepak Nath.
1. New exterior lighting fixtures on the Hennepin Avenue elevation.
2. New non-¬‐permanent (seasonal) vestibule at the Hennepin Avenue entry to the Exchange Nightclub.
3. New equipment platform on the back of the building facing the parking ramp.
4. New air intake grille on the back of the building facing the parking ramp.
(Please note that the lighting and vestibule are after-¬‐the-¬‐fact requests since they mistakenly made the changes without first obtaining HPC approval).

Wells Fargo Minneapolis WinterSkate offers you a chance to skate under the downtown Minneapolis skyline. Join us for one of Minnesota's favorite winter activities. The skating rink opens November 23 and will be open daily through the winter skating season.

Skating on the rink is free, and complimentary skates are available during warming house hours on a first-come, first-served basis. Sizes and quantities vary.

Celebrate the colors and aromas of Thanksgiving dinner by “cooking” up some paper. Start by pulling sheets of white paper, then add onion skin yellow, cabbage purple, cranberry red, orange orange and more! Use herbs and spices, such as crumpled sage, grated cinnamon and nutmeg, too. Waterproof shoes are suggested. Join Ellen Ferrari for family book arts fun! Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity and then dives into a book arts project. Workshops accommodate a range of developmental levels so that adults and children (or) adult/child teams may choose to work together or side-by-side. Each participant receives supplies to use during the workshop, but may choose to bring one set home if working with his or her partner. Ellen will provide older children with suggestions for extending their learning.
