January 30, 2017, Monday - Minimum Wage Listening Session at Day Block

Time: 3:00pm to 5:00pm

Location: Day Block Brewing, 1105 S Washington Avenue (there will be signage directing you to the meeting room)

Minimum Wage Listening Session, hosted by the East Town Business Partnership

The East Town Business Partnership is hosting a listening session in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis for the East Downtown business community to get input regarding the proposed minimum wage increase. City staff will lead this listening session, which is an opportunity to speak your voice in support or against, to ask questions and to hear what others say.

The City Council and Mayor Hodges are moving towards enacting city ordinance that will raise the minimum hourly wage rate within the City of Minneapolis to between $12 and $15/hour minimum from the current $9.50/hour minimum. This ordinance will affect every business within the city of Minneapolis, either directly or indirectly.

The Mayor, City Council and City staff working on this issue are looking for feedback from the entire community to help guide them on this very significant policy decision. This is a controversial issue with passionate arguments being made both for and against it. City staff are arranging listening sessions across the city to seek input. More information regarding the listening sessions is available on the City's website.

The East Town Business Partnership has volunteered to convene a listening session in our district, believing that it benefits its members to have a convenient opportunity to provide important feedback directly to city staff, unfiltered by intermediaries and in a familiar and comfortable environment.

A report issued several months ago to the City, authored by a team from the University of Minnesota - Humphrey School of Public Affairs, is available at the following link: http://www.minneapolismn.gov/meetings/legislation/WCMSP-187158

The City website contains additional background on this issue: http://www.minneapolismn.gov/minimumwage

January 30, 2017, Monday - Winter Sounds & Lights Show at Peavey Plaza

The Minneapolis Foundation is partnering with the creators of Northern Spark and the Downtown Council to bring a flurry of art to downtown Minneapolis during The Great Northern:

  • Living Banners and Words for Winter
Nicollet Mall | On Display Jan. 30 – Feb. 5

This sweeping, poetry-inspired art installation by Piotry Szyhalski will “wrap” Nicollet Mall between 12th and 5th streets, along with short poems about winter by local writers displayed on electronic road construction signs.

  • Winter Sounds & Lights Show
    Peavey Plaza | 5:20 p.m., 6:20 p.m., 7:20 p.m., and 8:20 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 30

With four evening showings, this spectacular recorded sound and light show is presented in partnership with the Minnesota Orchestra and University of Minnesota student engineers.

These events are just one of the many ways that The Minneapolis Foundation and its donors support the arts in Minnesota and beyond. In 2016 alone, the Foundation distributed more than $6 million to arts-related causes.

January 28, 2017, Saturday - Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Time: 10:00am - 11:30am

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, 415 Main Street SE

Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Discover the story of the National Historic Landmark Pillsbury A Mill, the largest flour mill in the world for many years, which recently reopened as the A-Mill Artist Lofts. A Mill City Museum guide will lead a tour of the former milling complex, including the rooftop deck and the basement waterpower facilities. Visitors will explore the largest and best-preserved waterpower system in Minneapolis (with views straight down a 50-foot drop shaft); discover how the building functioned during the flour milling era and learn about the new hydroelectric plant that helps to power the complex.

The Pillsbury A Mill was the flagship mill of the Pillsbury Flour Milling Company. The A Mill was not only the largest flour mill in the world when it opened in 1881, it was one of the few architect-designed mills in Minneapolis, designed by Leroy S. Buffington. As such it was an industrial show piece and tourist attraction from the start. The Pillsbury A Mill ceased operation in 2003, and in 2015, the complex was redeveloped as affordable lofts for working artists by Dominium, a Minneapolis-based developer.

Please meet at the gray door on Third Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the A-Mill Artist Loft main entrance at 315 Main Street SE). The tour includes about 1.0 miles of moderately-paced walking indoors and outdoors with some uneven surfaces.

January 28, 2017, Saturday - The Royal Family opens at The Guthrie

Time:  7:30pm

Location: Guthrie Theater, McGuire Proscenium Stage, 818 Second Street South

The Royal Family

For the Cavendishes, the “Royal Family” of Broadway, the show must go on. Set in 1920s Manhattan, this American classic (loosely based on the legendary Barrymore family) centers on three generations of actors, each at different stages in their careers. From an aging grande dame to a promising ingénue, together they confront a choice between secure, yet dull, domesticity and an erratic, egocentric, yet potentially fulfilling life on the stage. A brilliant, fast-paced comedy, The Royal Family is a masterfully written love letter to the Great White Way.
