December 30, 2016, Friday - Live Music at Day Block Brewing

Time: 9pm | 21+ | $5

Location: Day Block Brewing Company, 1103 Washington Avenue South

Dream Crusher & BadNraD

Dream Crusher - Dream Crusher is one of those singularly Minneapolis compositions—a new band made up entirely of musicians from other bands, who come together because they want to play around without the pressure of being in a "professional" group. Accidentally assembled one evening by Mo McNichols and Brian McDonough, both of Me and My Arrow, as a filler for a band that canceled last-minute at Nick and Eddie. The Dream Crusher sound ends up as a sort of atmospheric jam session, a little Gayngs meets Me and My Arrow, slow and sexy, like '70s lounge variety bedroom pop with a bigger punch. - Natalie Gallagher, City Pages Picked 2 Click

BadNraD - Multi-instrumentalist and hybrid DJ, producer and performer BadNraD has become a fixture of the Minneapolis electronic music scene with his unique synth-heavy sound. Majestic vocals and epic harmonies float atop intoxicating melodies and body-moving bass lines. His work running the gamut from bright, funky and energetic to dark, deep and intense, there’s always a surprise in store for the listener.

December 17, 2016, Saturday - Dinner Detective at Courtyard Minneapolis Downtown

Time: Doors open at 6:00pm

Location: Courtyard Minneapolis Downtown, 1500 Washington Avenue S

Dinner Detective Minneapolis

The Dinner Detective is America’s LARGEST, award-winning interactive comedic murder mystery dinner show! Our high-energy, modern-day whodunit is combined with a full four-course meal.

Our immensely popular murder mystery shows are set in the present day. Unlike other murder mystery dinner shows (or just dinner shows in general), with The Dinner Detective, you and your guests will not find themselves staring at cheesy costumes, there will be no recited campy dialogue and certainly no hokey song and dance. Our performers are dressed just like everyone else, leaving all of the guests to suspect who is a part of the show and who is not! All scripts are based on actual cold cases and are created in house. From the get go, the guests are seated with the performers and most likely will not realize it! Our Detectives enter the room, proceed to interrogate guests, find clues and start the investigation. This allows our guests to socialize with and interrogate each other, while deciphering real life-based clues. At the end of the night, prizes are awarded to the Top Sleuth who solves the crime!

December 17, 2016, Saturday - Christmas Jazz and Holiday Haiku with Jim Barnard at Boom Island Brewing

Time: 6:00pm 9:00pm

Location: Boom Island Brewing, 2014 Washington Avenue N

Christmas Jazz and Holiday Haiku with Jim Barnard

Boom Island’s own Taproom Manager Jim, AKA “Haiku Jim,” will be reading his holiday haiku poems at 6pm and hoping people find them funny, followed by Boom Room Jazz stalwarts The Brad Bellows Quintet, featuring Larry Hillman, who will play a special holiday set at 7pm.

Jim intends to provide a little ray of sunshine during these stressful holidays.  His hilariously dark haiku poems might lead one to believe that he hates the holiday.  One look at the taproom décor will tell you the opposite it true.  Jim’s friends and family know these poems well.  This is the first time they will be aired out in a public setting in the form of a live reading.

December 17, 2016, Saturday - The High 48's Holiday Show at Aster Cafe

Time: 9:00pm
.
Location: Aster Cafe, 125 Main Street SE
.
Since forming in 2006, The High 48s have been making music that combines the soulful sound of classic bluegrass with a modern attitude, original songs and a wide range of influences far beyond Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, and Flatt and Scruggs.

In a genre created and dominated by artists from the South, The High 48s were born and raised in the Upper Midwest. And in a music scene where playing standards is the norm, The High 48s are a band of songwriters who perform their own material in addition to the “festival favorites.”

The band takes its name from railroad slang for the boxcars originally used to transport troops on the front lines in WWI that could carry 40 soldiers or 8 horses, and were later use...d in the US on fast-moving “hot shot” freight trains by train hoppers looking for work during the Great Depression.

In the winter of 2014, The High 48s honored their namesake by recording an album of train songs in Nashville with Grammy-winning engineer and producer Randy Kohrs (Jim Lauderdale). The album features songs from the likes of Greg Brown, Robin and Linda Williams, Becky Schlegel, Darrell Scott, Muddy Waters and the 48s’ own Anthony Ihrig and Eric Christopher.

This album is the 48s’ sixth release and the culmination of many years of hard work. With band members who honed their bluegrass chops playing with Grammy-nominees Special Consensus and traditional bluegrass legend James King, as well as the many road miles logged since their win at the RockyGrass Band Competition in 2008 brought them national recognition, the 48s have never sounded better.
