June 29, 2019, Saturday - Nicollet Mall Walking Tour

Time: 10:00 AM – 12:00

Location: Voya Financial (Portico/Canopy Area), 20 S Washington Avenue

Nicollet Mall Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

Nicollet Avenue has been Minneapolis’ main shopping street for more than 100 years. In the 1960’s, to compete with suburban shopping malls that were drawing customers away from downtown, eight blocks of Nicollet were closed to automobile traffic, and the Nicollet Mall was built to the design of landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. The Mall has been updated twice since then: in 1990 when it was increased to 12 blocks and in 2017-18. The Mall is home to three Fortune 500 companies, hundreds of small businesses, and more than 140,000 workers. Every day, more pedestrians walk along Nicollet Mall than any other street in the city. It was the nation’s first transit mall (with driving lanes reserved for buses and taxis), an idea that has been copied in other U.S. cities including Portland, Oregon, and Denver. On this walking tour, we will investigate the histories of the Mall itself and of 15 buildings and spaces that face the Mall, including the IDS Crystal Court, Dayton's, the Loring Greenway, and Westminster Presbyterian Church. We will walk the Mall’s entire length to 12th St. Then we can take a free bus back to our starting point.

Tour guide Richard L. Kronick is a freelance writer who specializes in architecture and engineering. He teaches architectural history and has led more than 50 architecture tours for the College of Continuing Education at the U of M, Elk River Schools, and other organizations. John Jager and Purcell & Elmslie have been major focuses of Richard’s research for decades.

June 29, 2019, Saturday - SHIMMER: John Foster's First Solo Exhibition Opening Reception at Gamut Gallery

Time: 3pm - 9pm, $5

Location: Gamut Gallery, 717 S 10th Street

SHIMMER: John Foster's First Solo Exhibition Opening Reception

Gamut Gallery presents Shimmer, John Foster’s first ever solo exhibition. Foster combines color, light, space into sculptural synergy forming art objects ranging from radiant house plants and wall pieces to furniture. Fine Art and Quantum theory intersect in the process he describes as “inter-dimensional quilting.” Sculpted peaks and valleys of light represent a collaboration between strength and failure. Shimmer seeks to bridge the distance between the viewers and the objects.

Foster, will be premiering selections from his new work, the “Chromaflora Botanical” Collection, as well as the first series of hand-formed dichroic aluminum paintings that make up the “Empyrean Corrugation”. Though featuring his latest work, Foster won’t let down his long-time fans; Shimmer will include many of his classic kaleidoscopic polyhedra, the iridescent geometric aesthetic that has earned John worldwide recognition.

The end result is an experience of objects exploding in colorful motion that is dynamic and yet discrete. “You cannot cast a shadow if you let light through,” says Foster. “In spectral flux, the shadow is a projection filtering light into chromatic harmony, activating optical vibrations that produce visual/tactile synesthesia.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Materials geek John Foster employs various formal and situational strategies to create what can best be described as beautiful moments. Born in Los Gatos, California, John’s fascination with color and light began early, when he was diagnosed with a condition that causes severe bone pain. The limited physical mobility this resulted in inspired John to create movement and relationships with materials, combining the effects of light, color, geometry, and physics. Foster’s work evolved into creating and documenting actual objects that allow us to glimpse a glimmer of the infinite that lies beyond the future.

In 2015, Banksy tweeted an image of the Sparkle Palace Cocktail Table, captioned “Am I the only one the thinks this is beautiful?” John has had his work published in several major periodicals, including Cosmopolitan Germany, Vogue Brazil, Juxtapoz, and Hi Fructose Magazine. His work is in private collections around the world, including the Interstellar Sparkle Table commissioned by Zedd, which was cited in Architectural Digest. In 2017, John’s sculpture, Truth Ore, was featured in the Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival in the United Arab Emirates.

John works with artists to cultivate a culture of skill sharing, community building, artistic growth, and the spaces in which this occurs. He conducts participatory workshops, most recently, a weeklong project in Black Rock City in which he collected MOOP (matter out of place) and employed adaptive reuse techniques to make the Chromaflora Cyborg Botanical series. He’s currently based building a makerspace in Iowa City to host residencies and offer sanctuary for other working artists.

Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

West Bank Walking Tour

Pour it Back at Inbound BrewCo – Pride in Brewing

Gray Duck Media, parent company to The Beer Dabbler, The Growler Magazine, and Twin Cities Pride Magazine, feels strongly that the craft beer industry is strengthened, not impeded, by diversity. After receiving a homophobic email from a Minnesota brewery in response to an invitation to participate in the 2018 Beer Dabbler at Twin Cities Pride, Gray Duck Media was inspired to take action in a positive way.

Through contributions from Gray Duck Media, Dakota County Technical College, donations from breweries, individuals and fund-raising events, $12,000 will be raised to fund this scholarship, covering the cost of tuition and fees for one student identifying as LGBTQ+ enrolled in the Brewing & Beer Steward Technology program for the 2019-2020 academic year. The 21-credit, two-semester program requires completion of an internship and begins in late August. The program provides students with a solid understanding of brewing science, engineering, management and service.

Inbound BrewCo is kindly offering to donate $1 to our Pride in Brewing Scholarship fund for every beer sold in their taproom on Friday, 6/28.
