September 30, 2017, Saturday - Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Time: 10:30pm - Noon

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, 415 Main Street SE

Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Future dates: October 21 and 29

Discover the story of the National Historic Landmark Pillsbury A Mill, the largest flour mill in the world for many years, which recently reopened as the A-Mill Artist Lofts. A Mill City Museum guide will lead a tour of the former milling complex, including the rooftop deck and the basement waterpower facilities. Visitors will explore parts of the largest and best-preserved waterpower system in Minneapolis (with views straight down a 50-foot drop shaft); discover how the building functioned during the flour milling era and learn about the new hydroelectric plant that helps to power the complex.

The Pillsbury A Mill was the flagship mill of the Pillsbury Flour Milling Company. The A Mill was not only the largest flour mill in the world when it opened in 1881, it was one of the few architect-designed mills in Minneapolis, designed by Leroy S. Buffington. As such it was an industrial show piece and tourist attraction from the start. The Pillsbury A Mill ceased operation in 2003, and in 2015, the complex was redeveloped as affordable lofts for working artists by Dominium, a Minneapolis-based developer.

Please meet at the gray door on Third Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the A-Mill Artist Loft main entrance at 315 Main Street SE). The tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately-paced walking indoors and outdoors with some uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

This tour is presented in partnership with Dominium, A-Mill Artist Lofts.

September 27, 2017, Wednesday - Work Redux | CARE by Pollen at Machine Shop

Time: 7:30 AM – 10:30 AM

Location: Machine Shop, 300 2nd Street SE

Work Redux | CARE by Pollen

PROGRAM

7:30-8:30 AM Registration and Breakfast
8:30-8:45 AM Welcome and Performance
8:45-10:30 AM Speakers and Discussions

On top of managing careers, running businesses, and leading organizations, women are caring for their families, children, and communities. It’s work that often goes unnoticed and is underappreciated. It risks their own advancement and well-being.

At Work Redux | CARE, we will hear from women leaders who have experienced the hidden and visible effects when careers and caregiving collide. Whether it’s in the form of caring for children, co-workers (who orders the birthday cakes, who clears the dishes?), aging or sick parents and family members, how, in all of these dynamics, do we preserve care for ourselves? Together, we will imagine a future of work where the burdens and joys of caregiving become visible and, even more importantly, valuable.

September 26, 2017, Tuesday - Home on the Streets: A Forum for Minneapolis Mayoral Candidates

Time: 7:00pm to 8:30pm (doors at 6:30pm)

Locaton: First Universalist Church of Minneapolis, 3400 Dupont Avenue S

Home on the Streets: A Forum for Minneapolis Mayoral Candidates

First Universalist Church, with assistance from the League of Women Voters, will be hosting a forum for Minneapolis mayoral candidates focusing on issues of homelessness: the presence of homeless individuals in the community, sleeping in public, community livability, access to shelter, and interaction with resources. The forum will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. (doors at 6:30 p.m.) in the sanctuary at First Universalist Church. The forum will be moderated by Monica Nilsson, a local advocate for the homeless, and is being organized by long-time members of First Universalist, Barb and Gary Melom.

Candidates will be encouraged to demonstrate a depth of knowledge that shows their ability to ...be a leader in multi-agency efforts to address homelessness. Questions related to affordable housing will be deferred to a forum at Plymouth Congregational Church on Oct. 2, sponsored by Make Homes Happen.

The Star Tribune has reported that the 3,125 homeless people identified in Minneapolis this year represent an overall increase in homelessness by 231 people over the last 10 years. How did this happen, despite significantly intensified efforts to combat homelessness?

The Office to End Homelessness reports that the number of persons identified as chronically homeless in Minneapolis dropped from 919 in 2009 to 360 in 2016. What issues are at the base of chronicity and how should they be addressed?

What considerations are most important to the mayor’s leadership role in addressing homelessness?

“The measure of our progress is not whether we add to the abundance of those who have much. It is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.” – FDR Monument, Washington, DC

Co-Sponsors: First Universalist Church of Minneapolis, Street Voices of Change in collaboration with the Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness, BEACON Interfaith Housing Collaborative, Simpson Housing Services, The SAFE Group, Peace House Community, Our Saviour’s Housing, St. Stephen’s Human Services, St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, and Hats for the Homeless.

September 25, 2017, Monday - Eileen Myles: Afterglow (A Dog Memoir) at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft Literary Center, at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave

Eileen Myles: Afterglow (A Dog Memoir)

Join the Loft for a special evening as Eileen Myles presents their new memoir, Afterglow.

Afterglow joins a grand literary tradition of writers paying homage to a beloved dog—J. R. Ackerley’s My Dog Tulip, Virginia Woolf’s Flush, Mary Oliver’s Dog Songs, Amy Hempel’s stories, as well as Mark Doty’s Dog Years, and even Abigail Thomas’s A Three Dog Life—but as one might suspect, Myles’ entry in the canon subverts both genre and tradition and stands apart as resolutely its own thing. Combining screenplay, monologue, science fiction, and lucid memory, the text is animated with photos, diagrams, drawings, and poems to craft a mosaic of their life together.

Moving from an imaginary talk show where Rosie is interviewed by Myles’s childhood puppet, to a critical reenactment of the night Rosie mated with another pit bull; from lyrical transcriptions of their walks, to Rosie’s enlightened narration from the afterlife, Afterglow illuminates the surreal and familiar aspects of what it means to dedicate your existence to a dog.

Eileen Myles—who prefers to use a gender-neutral pronoun—is the author of more than twenty books, including Chelsea Girls, Cool For You, and most recently, I Must Be Living Twice: New & Selected Poems 1975-2014. Their many honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship in nonfiction, four Lambda Literary Awards, the Clark Prize for Excellence in Art Writing, the Shelley Memorial Award from The Poetry Society of America, Creative Capital’s Literature Award as well as an Andy Warhol Foundation Art Writers’ Grant, and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts grant. They live in Marfa, TX and New York City. Their poems were featured in seasons 2 and 3 of the Emmy-winning show Transparent.
