How does an author's manuscript become a book? What do editors do all day, anyway? Ann Regan, editor-in-chief at the Minnesota Historical Society Press, will give an overview of publishing at a dynamic regional press.

This project is funded with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

With sell-out crowds at last year's festival, Minnesotans' love affair with Cuban cinema is clear. And it is also clear that there is a hunger for information about this intriguing island to our south, so rich in music and the arts. Yet, despite all that we have to share with one another, our government still denies us access. So, although most of us can't get there in person, we can get a taste of Cuban life through the movies.

The film is subtitled, and will be followed at a nearby bistro with a discussion.

Danielson, an avant-pop gospel band from suburban Clarksboro, New Jersey led by Daniel Smith (guitar, lead vocals) comes to the Southern Theater in April hot on the heels of the February release of its first new album in five years (Best of Gloucester County) featuring a new band line up that includes Patrick Berkery (drums), Evan Mazunik (keyboards/vocals), Elin K. Smith (vocals), Joshua Stamper (bass/vocals), Andrew Wilson (lead guitar) and indie music darling Sufjan Stevens.

The band has what can only be described as ecstatic vision. Fronted by cult artist Daniel Smith and comprised of an unusual consortium of family members and friends including his sisters Megan and Rachel and wife Elin, the band is known for its dramatic range, fearless writing about spiritual experience, innovative musical arrangements, and hand-made, deliberate uniforms. Danielson’s previous release, Ships—featuring long-time collaborators Deerhoof, Sufjan Stevens and WHY?—is a crowning achievement that Pitchfork called “nearly dizzying” with “music that builds to such immense heights.” Mythology-hounds have found in Danielson the full package, and tuning into its frequency can be as deeply rewarding in a literary-visual-musical way as are canonical acts such as Sun Ra, Parliament and David Bowie.

Joyce Carol Oates is a recipient of the National Book Award and the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in Short Fiction. She has written over 30 collections of short stories, eight volumes of poetry, innumerable essays and plays, and 56 novels, including the national bestsellers We Were the Mulvaneys, Falls, and Blonde. She is a Professor of Humanities at Princeton University and has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1978. A Widow’s Story is a poignant, intimate memoir about the unexpected death of her husband of 46 years and its wrenching, surprising aftermath.

Talk of the Stacks is a reading series exploring contemporary literature and culture.

Arthur & Barbara is a portrait of art critic/philosopher Arthur Danto and artist Barbara Westman seen reflected in the space of their New York City apartment on Riverside Drive. The artist's book embodies their life and work in symbolic forms of thoughtful play. Arthur & Barbara is the last book in "Memory and Experience", a quartet of artist's books by Thomas Rose in collaboration with Wilber H. "Chip" Schilling.

In tandem with the Minnesota Opera’s production of the opera Wuthering Heights, a panel of experts pose the question “Is This Love?” focusing on the relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine.

Diana Postlethwite is chair of the St. Olaf English department and a Bronte scholar. She has taught Wuthering Heights many times.

Sarah Hoppe is co-owner and staff psychologist at Grove Pyschotherapy in Minneapolis, specializing in couple’s communication, parent/child issues and backgrounds of abuse of various kinds.

Eric Simonson is the stage director for the Minnesota Opera’s production of Wuthering Heights as well as an Academy Award-winning filmmaker.

Get an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A museum interpreter will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years and the many changes to the building over time. Also covered will be the challenges of preserving the 120-year-old, fire-damaged building; its art, architecture and interior design; and the St. Anthony Falls Historic District.

Although many parts of the mill can be explored during regular museum visits, this is the public's only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building.

Kevin Fenton and Christine Sneed, winners of the AWP Award for the Novel and of the AWP Grace Paley Prize in Short Fiction respectively, read from their newly published works.

Kevin Fenton lives in Saint Paul and works as an advertising writer and creative director. His fiction has appeared in the Northwest Review, the Laurel Review and the Emprise Review. His writing on graphic design has been anthologized in Looking Closer 2 and Émigré No. 70: The Look Back Issue. He holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of Minnesota and a JD from the University of Minnesota Law School. About Merit Badges: Follow four friends as they move from The Brady Bunch to Seinfeld, from junior high to middle management. There is Quint, whose rebellion frays into self-destruction; Slow, who struggles to become the world’s first teenage father figure; Chimes, who fears losing his friends while picking up a 7-10 split; and Barb who escapes the conformity of Minnisapa, Minnesota, only to find herself returning by dark of night.

Christine Sneed teaches creative writing and literature courses at DePaul University. A graduate of the MFA creative writing program at Indiana University, she has published stories in Best American Short Stories 2008, New England Review, Massachusetts Review and many other journals. About Portraits of a Few of the People I’ve Made Cry: The ten stories in this striking debut collection examine the perils of love and what it means to live during an era when people will offer themselves, almost unthinkingly, to strangers. May–December romances flourish in these stories, as do self-doubt and, in many cases, serious regret. Presented in cooperation with the Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP).

What Follows What Came Before opening reception in MCBA's Lerner Bindery Gallery

The exhibition What Follows What Came Before takes place in the Bindery, a studio space dedicated to collating loose pieces into a bound whole. Taking a cue from its setting, the show's theme examines "sequence" -- from mathematical series to taxonomic chronologies, from musical passages to the reshuffling of old texts in search of new coherence. The featured artists employ a diversity of art forms (sound engineering, beaded adornments, printmaking and more) to investigate the aesthetics of orderedness. Curated by Abigail Woods Anderson. Featuring work by: Kristin Cheronis; Sean Connaughty; Nicole Drilling; Steve Earnest, John Miller and Maley Neil; Ruthann Godollei; Brian Heller; Abby Mullen; Alison Nguyen; Scott Puhl; Dan Vevang; and Abigail Woods Anderson.
