November 26, 2013, Tuesday - Crown Hydro Public Meeting at Central Library

Date: Tuesday, November 26

Time: 3:30 pm

Location: Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall, Pohlad Hall

Crown Hydro Public Meeting

Crown Hydro, LLC holds a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license to construct and operate the Upper Saint Anthony Falls Hydroelectric Project, Project No. 11175, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on the west bank of the Mississippi River at Upper St. Anthony Falls.

An application is being prepared to amend its existing license to, in part, shift the location of the project’s powerhouse and discharge tunnel. The proposed new powerhouse location would be approximately 150 feet north, in the headrace canal adjacent to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s lock facility.

A consultation meeting has been scheduled to solicit comments on its proposed license amendment. The meeting will provide an opportunity for individuals to learn more about the proposed changes to the planned Upper Saint Anthony Falls Hydroelectric Project, and to provide comments on the Proposed Project.

November 24, 2013, Sunday - Cake Mix and the Rise of Convenience Foods at Mill City Museum

Times: 2:00pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 2nd Street South

Cake Mix and the Rise of Convenience Foods

Fee: Programs included with museum admission of $11 adults, $9 seniors and college students, $6 children ages 6-17; free for MHS members.

The postwar era of the late 1940s and 1950s ushered in a new era of kitchen conveniences. Many of the technologies that made this possible were developed by the American food industry during the Second World War. Did housewives want these easy-to-use products and appliances or were food companies creating a market for their goods by exaggerating the drudgery of home cooking? Using the example of the cake mix, this demonstration will answer this question, highlighting the dramatic changes in cooking habits during this era and how those innovations affect our lives today. Visitors will learn about food history, sample cakes made from scratch and from mix, and take home a copy of a recipe.

November 23, 2013, Saturday - Equilibrium: "Half-Breed" featuring PC Muñoz and Erica Nalani Benton at The Loft

Time: 8:00pm

Location: The Loft Literary Center, at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Avenue

Equilibrium: "Half-Breed" featuring PC Muñoz and Erica Nalani Benton

A showcase of mixed-race Indigenous poets featuring Loft Spoken Word Immersion Fellow PC Muñoz, with Erica Nalani Benton, Emily Johnson, Jennifer Kreisberg, R. Vincent Moniz Jr, and DJ Nak.

"A night featuring a wonderful cross-section of multiracial indigenous voices could be called a number of beautiful, soulful things. I titled the event HALF-BREED as a way to deflate and subvert a term which has decidedly pejorative overtones, and to directly confront the caricatures and stereotypes that have long been associated with mixed-race people of all backgrounds. For better or worse, it has nothing to do with Cher.”
 -PC Muñoz

Loft Immersion Spoken Word Fellow PC Muñoz is a half-Chamoru (indigenous Guamanian), half-European recording artist, poet, and musician based in San Francisco. His genre-defying projects are stylistically broad and deep, revealing an artistic explorer equally at home with spoken-word, electronic funk, all-acoustic hip-hop, world music mash-ups, and experimental compositions for dance. His partnership with composer/longtime Kronos Quartet cellist Joan Jeanrenaud has yielded two highly acclaimed projects: the Grammy-nominated album Strange Toys and the iTunes-charting cello and beats duo album Pop-Pop. His minimalist poetry-and-improvised music CD, Twenty Haiku, took the "Best in Spoken Word" award at the 2006 DIY awards in Hollywood, CA. An enthusiastic collaborator, PC has recorded with rock legend Jackson Browne, dream-pop poet Ingrid Chavez, Kulintang virtuoso Danny Kalanduyan, Anthony Brown of the Asian American Orchestra, and countless other musicians and recording artists across a wide range of genres. His latest release, The Space Between, is a series of instrumentals based on poetic word pairs, with avant-garde pianist Ira Kamin. Learn more at http://www.pcmunoz.com/
