Join the Center for Economic Inclusion for their first Annual Powering Inclusion Summit where we will equip private, public and civic change makers and policy influencers with the knowledge, tools and networks to disrupt inequitable policies and practices and take daily actions that lead to increased growth, innovation and inclusive workplaces. Barbara Brown Taylor is an Episcopal priest, teacher, and bestselling author of fourteen books on religion and spirituality, including Leaving Church, An Altar in the World and Learning to Walk in the Dark, which was featured on the cover of Time magazine and named one of the best religion books of 2014 by Publisher’s Weekly. She has served on the faculties of Piedmont College, Columbia Theological Seminary, Candler School of Theology at Emory University, McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University, and on the Certificate in Theological Studies program at Arrendale State Prison for Women in Alto, Georgia. She has been recognized by Baylor University as one of the top twelve preachers in America, and in 2015, she was named Georgia Woman of the Year. Join us for an evening of conversation with Anna Quindlen, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and bestselling author of "Miller''s Valley."

Anna Quindlen is the author of several celebrated novels, including "One True Thing" and "Object Lessons." During her tenure as a columnist at the New York Times, she won the Pulitzer Prize and published two collections, "Living Out Loud" and "Thinking Out Loud." Her memoir "Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake," published in 2012, was a #1 New York Times bestseller. Now she returns with the lively "Nanaville," a beautiful and moving book about being a grandmother. "Empty Bowls," an international grassroots effort to address hunger, is coming again to the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District for its 6th year and back where it all began at East Side Neighborhood Services!

ABOUT EMPTY BOWLS NE

Its concept is simple: Empty Bowls NE - Minneapolis asks local potters - who have teamed up with Thomas Edison High School art students - to provide handcrafted ceramic bowls and asks amazing local restaurants to provide delicious soup; guests of the event pay whatever they can and keep the bowl itself as an excellent reminder of the empty bowls in the world and in our own community.

Empty Bowls NE is a 100% volunteer-driven effort and 100% of all proceeds raised go towards three terrific NE Minneapolis hunger causes: The Sheridan Story (kids), Helping Hand Food Pantry (adults), and East Side Neighborhood Services' Senior Food Shelf (seniors), serving a spectrum of generations within our NE Minneapolis community. Last year, Empty Bowls NE raised over to $18,000 for these local hunger causes. This year's goal is to raise over $20,000.

Similar projects have been held for years in nearby communities: St Catherine's University, Columbia Heights, Hopkins, Rogers, Northfield, Plymouth, Maple Grove, New Prague, and Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis.

Empty Bowls NE has secured over 500 handmade ceramic bowls. Many Northeast potters have been Empty Bowls participants in surrounding areas, but until recent years had no means to join the effort in their own community. Expanding on that community spirit, Empty Bowls NE has again partnered with Edison High School's Fine Arts department to both produce pottery and provide students exposure for their work and experience interacting with prominent local artisans.

This year's Empty Bowls NE will again feature a "Pottery Lottery" where the community can purchase raffle tickets for original artwork and ceramics donated by local artists. The proceeds from this raffle will be donated directly to Edison High School's Fine Arts department to support their Arts programming.

100% of the funds are distributed to Sheridan Story, Helping Hand Food Pantry (https://helpinghandfoodpantry.webs.com), and East Side Neighborhood Services Senior Food Programs.

About the Show:

Infinite Abyss in Motion is at the intersection of Art and Science. While science seeks to understand the natural world in which we live and beyond into the furthest infinity of space or the tiniest unseen particles in front of us, what it cannot with certainty tell us is what the particles look like.  This is where artists step in to imagine, and then visually create, what many of our world’s mysteries might look like. 
Infinite Abyss in Motion imagines the “out there” question from the perspective of two artists – for Mary Simon-Casati, the infinite physical abyss, and for Jenna Murphy, the digital abyss in the infinite possibilities. Mary paints what she imagines particles might look like and how they might move and sweep across a canvas, visibly playing with the idea of an abyss that goes on and on into infinity. She strives to make the unseen not only visible, but also felt through its movement. 
Jenna’s digital compositions feature organic shapes that appear to dance, allowing a snapshot, and one of an infinite number of iterations, of the motion within the infinite abyss; an unseen world discovered.

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building.

A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time.

This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

• The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
• "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
• The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
• The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
• Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
• Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928, and 1991
• The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Discover the story of the National Historic Landmark Pillsbury A Mill, the largest flour mill in the world for many years, which recently reopened as the A-Mill Artist Lofts. A Mill City Museum guide will lead a tour of the former milling complex, including the rooftop deck (weather permitting) and the basement waterpower facilities.

Highlights include the largest and best-preserved waterpower system in Minneapolis, with views straight down a 50-foot drop shaft through a glass floor. Guests will discover how the building functioned during the flour milling era; see the architectural highlights of the recently completed A-Mill Artist Lofts built within the historic mill buildings; and learn about the new hydroelectric plant that helps to power the complex.

This tour is presented in partnership with A-Mill Artist Lofts and includes about 1.5 miles of moderately-paced walking indoors and outdoors with some uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Tours begin at the gray door on 3rd Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the main entrance at 315 Main Street SE).
