March 28, 2017, Tuesday - 'State of the River' along the Minneapolis River Gorge
Time: 7:00pm to 8:00pm
Location: Minnehaha Academy, 3100 West River Pkwy
'State of the River' along the Minneapolis River Gorge
Friends of the Mississippi River partnered with the National Park Service's Mississippi National River & Recreation Area unit to develop the State of the River Report.
Join report co-author Trevor Russell, FMR's water program director, for a brief overview of the report's key findings at Minnehaha Academy near the river in south Minneapolis. From invasive "flying" carp to bacterial contamination, from eagles to swimmability, Trevor will highlight important trends and emerging issues as well as potential solutions.
The report highlights 14 key indicators of water quality and river health in the metro Mississippi River and made headlines throughout the metro and the state, helping to put the health of the Mississippi in the spotlight. It also comes with companion stewardship and policy guides to help readers take personal action to protect and restore our great river.
This talk is hosted by the Longfellow Community Council’s River Gorge Committee. Learn more on their Facebook event page.
March 28, 2017, Tuesday - National Evening of Science on Screen: "Life as a Titan: Godzilla and King Kong vs Nature" at St. Anthony Main Theatre
Time: 7:00pm
Location: St. Anthony Main Theatre, 115 Main Street SE
The two mightiest monsters of all time battle in the thrilling adventure classic, King Kong vs. Godzilla. When an underhanded pharmaceutical company goes to a remote tropical island to steal King Kong for advertising purposes, they get more than they bargained for when the gigantic ape attacks an unsuspecting village and an enormous octopus. Meanwhile, far below the sea, a submarine crew unleashes reptilian terror when they melt a block of ice and release the ferocious Godzilla from his icy lair. When both destructive monsters descend on Tokyo, it's a fight that holds the future of mankind in the balance in this knock-out film that was the first theatrical release to bring its larger-than-life contenders to the big screen in glorious color.
Hollywood loves a good monster fight. But for middle-aged monsters, like Godzilla and King Kong, fighting is easy, it's life that is hard. With increasing age, gravity and heat can become potent foes. So how would King Kong and Godzilla stack up against real life monsters, like the larger dinosaurs?

March 26, 2017, Sunday - More than a Single Story: Reclaiming our Food at The Loft
Time: 2:00pm - 4:00 pm
Location: Target Performance Hall, The Loft, 1011 Washington Avenue South
More than a Single Story: Reclaiming our Food
Food has always been a tool for organizing, celebrating, and creating community. By those determined to assert and maintain power, it has been a means of gaining control of the people. Human bodies and land—a natural resource like air and water, have been commodified. Food became a privilege instead of a human right.
In this discussion with Pakou Hang, LaDonna Sanders Redmond, Princess Titus, and Diane Wilson we will hear how colonization and commodification have affected our communities’ relationships with food and how we can reclaim the food that is meaningful to us.
Advanced tickets guarantee a general admission seat and help cover the Loft's costs to host the event. Pay-what-you-can tickets are available at the door 30 minutes prior to the event on a first-come, first-served basis. No one turned away for lack of funds. Doors open 30 minutes before the event. Seating is general admission (not assigned).

March 26, 2017, Sunday - Solar Artists Workshop at The Soap Factory
Time: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM CDT
Location: The Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE
Can your art project be solar powered?
Solar power can give you greater mobility within urban and rural landscapes, providing you with the facility to explore new aesthetic spaces for Placemaking, temporary or mobile installations, and community outreach. A solar powered art project not only reduces your carbon footprint, it encourages dialog about art, energy consumption, and Climate Change within the community.
The Solar Artists Workshop is free, supported by a grant from the Institute on the Environment. The workshop will focus on photovoltaics (solar panels), with brief examples of other forms such as solar thermal, solar cooking, and passive solar. All disciplines, age 18+, all experience levels, welcomed and encouraged.
In this hands-on workshop you will:
- Learn how to read a multimeter
- Experience the variables of solar power by going on a solar scavenger hunt
- Power small electronics with photovoltaics
- Learn how to calculate loads using Ohm’s law
- Listen to and see examples from artists, K-12 educators, and an expert from Midwest Renewable Energy Association
- Receive printouts and links to the slideshow, agenda, contacts, and resources
- Be provided with lunch, coffee, and water
The Solar Artists workshop will provide practical resources for artists to use solar power in their work, so they can open up new aesthetic spaces within urban and rural landscapes with limited or no access to power. An immediate application of the content can be applied to projects selected for the Northern Spark all night festival, Climate Chaos/Climate Rising in June of 2017.
If it’s sunny, there will be a bonus performance by Tim Donahue and his mobile music stage!
Limited seats available. Reserve yours now!
