January 5, 2020, Sunday - Washburn A Mill Tour at Mill City Museum

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Location: Mill City Museum704 South 2nd Street

Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building.

A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time.

This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

  • The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
  • "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
  • The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
  • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone plaza originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928, and 1991
  • The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodelled into two classrooms while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Future dates: January 19 and 25

January 5, 2020, Sunday - 13th Annual Women’s Christmas at Keegan's Pub

Time: 12 Noon – 4:00pm

Location: Keegan’s Pub, 16 University Avenue NE

13th Annual Women’s Christmas

There'll be no post-holiday depression the weekend after New Year's at Keegan's Pub. For its lucky 13th year, Keegan’s Pub will host the only official Women’s Christmas celebration in the Twin Cities, Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020.

On that day, Christmas celebrations will be over for most of the Twin Cities. But Keegan’s will once host one last holiday bash exclusively for women to celebrate the Irish tradition of “Women’s Christmas.” The 13th annual Women’s Christmas at Keegan’s will take place noon to 4 p.m. on Jan. 5. Prize drawings for women and special food offerings will be featured, and Locklin Road will perform from 1 to 4 p.m.

Keegan’s Pub started the celebration in 2008 after learning that Women’s Christmas is a popular event in Ireland—particularly in Cork. On Women’s Christmas—celebrated on the feast of the Epiphany, the traditional end of Christmas season (aka the twelfth day of Christmas)—the custom is for Irish women take the day off, and for men to take on the household duties. Women fill the pubs, and go out and celebrate with their girlfriends. Gifts are given to women.

The event is designed to give women a day off, to be together and have fun after the frantic holiday season.

“This is a great event. It’s been wildly popular, and we look forward to this memorable day at the pub,” says owner Marty Neumann.

In keeping with the tradition of Women’s Christmas (also known as Little Christmas or Little Women’s Christmas), women are encouraged to bring small gifts to the pub to exchange with their friends. Keegan’s will also have prize drawings.

Keegan’s full menu will be offered. Following the Women’s Christmas event on Jan. 6, a traditional Irish Session will begin at 6 p.m.

For more information, contact Keegan’s Pub, (612) 252-0880 or go to www.keeganspub.com. For more information about Locklin Road, go to http://www.locklinroad.com.

DJ Simone started her musical career at Macalester College, where she DJ-ed vinyl records on her own radio show for three years. She creates a musical experience inspired by an eclectic assortment of uplifting music. Along with being a DJ and producer, Simone is also a teacher, sharing knowledge, creativity, and instilling a love for music in her students.

Kashimana (“that is her heart”) is a singer-songwriter, composer, producer, lyricist, and artist with a rich soulful blues voice that soars through her original compositions, for which she writes both lyrics and music. Her songs are catchy and paint compelling stories of her experiences growing up in Nigeria and Kenya, traveling through Africa and Europe, and settling in the United States. Her goal is to help people share their own stories through song.

Speaking Out creates arts-based activities to nurture curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking for children and adults. This collective of working and teaching artists shares techniques communities can use to express themselves and dig into ideas that need attention. With puppets, plays, poems, songs and dance, they invite conversations and new creation.
