Time:  Meet at TBD, 9:00pm - Bicycle or car tour.

Location: Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE

The Mobile Dance Party Tour ("Move it” Tour)

In celebration of Common Room’s tenth anniversary, join us for our take on a dance party celebration. Think multiple secret locations. Think local hits. Think dancing in the back of a moving truck (don’t worry, it will be parked!). We’re revisiting one of Common Room’s earliest events, Guest DJ Dance Party, and partnering with Dance Shanty and Moving Party alum, Brady Clark, to bring you the chance to tour, dance, mingle and celebrate Common Room in the best way we know how.

ABOUT COMMON ROOM
The Soap Factory continues its ongoing site-specific public program, Here & There: Rethinking Public Spaces, welcoming back Common Room for its 10th iteration of artist-led tours through the Twin Cities. Through August, themed tours will take place every Wednesday evening. Common Room topics provide a focus through which to explore multiple facets of the urban geography — in the past, these themes have included cats, skyways, fishing, freeway construction, weather, community kitchens, personal memory, sacred spaces, islands and more. The tours this year include The Casino Tour, The Piped Music Tour, The Bathroom Tour, and The Mobile Dance Party Tour to celebrate Common Room’s Tenth Anniversary.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Andy Sturdevant is an artist and writer living in Minneapolis. He is the author of two books of nonfiction, and he has exhibited his art projects at venues in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle and elsewhere.

Sergio Vucci is a Minneapolis-based artist. He is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his work focuses primarily on engaging his surroundings outside of gallery spaces and on relational interactions, co-authoring ephemeral creative experiences with participants in response to place.

HERE & THERE
This project is supported and presented as part of Here & There: Rethinking Public Spaces, the Soap Factory’s ongoing site-specific public program. Rethinking Public Spaces presents artist projects that enliven underutilized spaces throughout Minnesota, rethinking public space and considering what it means to place-make through a contemporary, celebratory, and critical lens.

August 28, 2018, Tuesday - Summer Work Night at Ole Olson Park

Time: 6pm - 8pm

Location: Ole Olson Park, 2325 West River Road N

Summer Work Night at Ole Olson Park

Ole Olson Park in north Minneapolis is known for its top-notch walking and biking trails and stunning skyline views, but Friends of the Mississippi River wants it to be recognized for even more. Join FMR as they return to this riverfront park to tend an important native demonstration prairie garden along the bike trail. These showy flowers and grasses will not only beautify the park but provide much-needed bee, butterfly and bird habitat. And, with deep root systems that act like filters, they'll help reduce the amount of pollution flowing into the Mississippi River. This summer work night will help further the long-term transformation and commitment at this site and to the river.

Although a small urban site, Ole Olson is a surprisingly diverse landscape, including riverfront shoreline, woodland terrace and grassland slopes. While the Minneapolis park Board has been working to restore and stabilize the shoreline and slopes, much of the park is home to Russian thistle and other invasive plants and weeds. Working with the Park Board and relying on local volunteer power, we look forward to transforming the park into an oasis of habitat and respite — returning willows to the shoreline, wildflowers to the slopes and majestic oaks to the terraces – and keeping it that way. As always, all are welcome, however, capacity is limited and registration required. FMR will provide any tools and training needed.

To sign up and receive directions to the meeting spot, contact FMR Volunteer Coordinator Amy Kilgore via the contact form (please select Amy by name from the staff list under "Category") or at akilgore@fmr.org, 651-222-2193 x31. Please include the name of the event, your name, address and phone number along with the number in your party. You will receive a confirmation email with details and directions from akilgore@fmr.org within two business days. (If you don't, please check your SPAM folder.)

Performance will be in 3 sections: Movement, Drumming, and Acting. The actors have been writing - you can expect to hear their own words, and they are powerful.

We are so honored to have an incredible team of professionals leading the Mill City Players. James A. Williams is the Artistic Director and comes to this project with 42 years of theater experience and incredible skills. JW (as he is known) has been a professional actor, director, producer, and writer for almost 40 years.  Patricia Brown, adjunct professor of dance at the University of Minnesota and Macalester, teaches movement and serves as Associate Director. Ahanti Young, professional percussionist, actor, and spoken word artist teaches our actors drumming on paint pails and also serves as Associate Director.

This troupe was created and is sponsored by the Friends of the Mill District. We began a year ago and are now preparing to make this troupe a permanent group. The mission of the Friends is to create and support activities that build community, and are free of charge to all participants. We hit a home run with this group!  Come and see for yourself.
