May 31, 2016, Tuesday - Science on Screen: Grizzly Man at St. Anthony Main Theater

Time: 7:00 pm

Location: St. Anthony Main Theater 3, 115 Main Street SE

The Film Society of Minneapolis and St. Paul presents SCIENCE ON SCREEN: GRIZZLY MAN

Tickets

Join wildlife researcher Dr. Mark Ditmer for a special screening of Werner Herzog's Grizzly Man, paired with a discussion on bear behavior and their evolving environmental landscape.

Filmmaker Werner Herzog adds another real-life character to his growing pantheon of people who walk a fine line between visionary genius and madness in this documentary. Timothy Treadwell was a self-styled authority on bears who, starting in 1990, would spend as much time as possible each year in Alaska, camping out near a grizzly bear habitat. While Treadwell claimed to love the bears and felt as one with them, he had no formal training in their behavior, and while familiarizing himself with the creatures he would walk within a few feet of them with a video camera in hand. To many, Treadwell seemed part man of nature, part conjuror, and part self-promotion expert, but the part that guided his kinship with the bears failed him in 2003, when he and his girlfriend were killed in a grizzly attack. Treadwell shot hundreds of hours of footage of himself and the grizzlies, and Herzog has used this footage as the core of Grizzly Man, a documentary look at Treadwell's life and death, while also including interviews with people who knew him, animal experts, and scientists. Acclaimed British guitarist Richard Thompson composed and performed the film's musical score.

May 31, 2016, Tuesday - Marge Barrett Publication Launch at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft Literary Center, at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave

Marge Barrett Publication Launch

The Loft presents an evening with author Marge Rogers Barrett celebrating the release of her new memoir, Called: The Making & Unmaking of a Nun. The launch event will include a conversation with Loft Executive Director Britt Udesen and Barrett about the process of writing this story over a large swath of time, the experience of becoming a nun, a teacher, a wife and mother, a sister caring for family members. The discussion will include excerpts from the book and a Q &A with the audience.

Marge Rogers Barrett is proud to be a part of Minnesota’s literary tradition, graduating with a BA in English from the University of St. Catherine and completing Master’s work in education and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Minnesota. She’s taught in high schools and universities, and for the past ten years, adults in the community—at the Loft Literary Center, the Jewish Community Center, MinnPost, the Collegeville Institute, and workshops in the Cities and around the country. She has published poetry and prose in numerous journals, stories in Dzanc Books’ Best of the Web 2009, the Minnesota Historical Society’s The State We’re In, and a poetry chapbook, My Memoir Dress

River ecology after the lock closure: return to a more natural river?

Hosted by Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership

Free event, but please register

Nearly a year ago, in an unusual move, the lock at Upper Saint Anthony Falls was closed to boat and barge traffic.  The closure was the result of an act of Congress, designed in part to slow the spread of invasive carp up the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, to rivers and lakes beyond.

But inevitably, the closure, and the end of dredging the area for a shipping channel, is having an impact on the area's ecology.  What is the impact on the shape of the river bottom?  How are invertebrates and mussels impacted?  What is the impact on water chemistry.

The Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership, Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, and the St. Anthony Falls Lab and River Life Program at the University of Minnesota have partnered to investigate those impacts.

Join us along with a panel of experts to hear about data collection efforts and consider the kinds of impacts we may see on our river environment.

May 22, 2016, Sunday - Art-a-Whirl talk with Jamies Eli Shiffer at A-Mill Artist Lofts

Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, Performance Hall, 315 Main Street NE

Author James Eli Shiffer will discuss and sign copies of his new book The King of Skid Row: John Bacich and the Twilight Years of Old Minneapolis.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
City blue laws drove the liquor trade and its customers—hard-drinking lumberjacks, pensioners, farmhands, and railroad workers—into the oldest quarter of Minneapolis. In the fifty-cent-a-night flophouses of the city’s Gateway District, they slept in cubicles with ceilings of chicken wire. In rescue missions, preachers and nuns tried to save their souls. Sociology researchers posing as vagrants studied them. And in their midst John Bacich, aka Johnny Rex, who owned a bar, a liquor store, and a cage hotel, documented the gritty neighborhood’s last days through photographs and film of his clientele.

The King of Skid Row follows Johnny Rex into this vanished world that once thrived in the heart of Minneapolis. Drawing on hours of interviews conducted in the three years before Bacich’s death in 2012, James Eli Shiffer brings to life the eccentric characters and strange events of an American skid row. Supplemented with archival and newspaper research and his own photographs, Bacich’s stories recreate the violent, alcohol-soaked history of a city best known for its clean, progressive self-image. His life captures the seamy, richly colorful side of the city swept away by a massive urban renewal project in the early 1960s and gives us, in a glimpse of those bygone days, one of Minneapolis’s most intriguing figures—spinning some of its most enduring and enthralling tales.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
James Eli Shiffer has been a professional journalist for twenty-five years and is currently a columnist and editor at the Minneapolis–St. Paul Star Tribune. In 2010 he partnered with Ewen Media to create Rubbed Out, a multimedia history of the murder of a journalist in Minneapolis in 1945.
