December 27, 2013, Friday - Final Day of Public Skating at the Metrodome Ever!

Time: 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Location: The Dome (both levels)

Rollerdome - Let's Go Skating!

Parking: Free in the Metrodome lot located on the east side of the stadium

The upper and lower concourses of the Metrodome become the Rollerblade Rollerdome, annually hosting thousands of inline skaters who come to relax, exercise, train, socialize, or just watch others turn endless effortless laps on the roughly half-mile smooth concrete loop. Park your car in the free lot adjacent to Gate D and enter the revolving doors. (Because trapped air is what keeps the Dome domey, trying to use a conventional door will expel you quicker than a sneeze.)

Admission is $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for students, and $4.50 for kids. Optional skate rentals cost an additional $5.00 per pair of well-maintained and up-to-date Rollerblade inline skates. Coat/shoe check and safety gear are free, but neither is mandatory. "Skate at your own risk" signs might intimidate the newbie, but you really couldn't ask for a more forgiving environment in which to learn--a level, debris-free surface, ample elbow room on even the most crowded nights and free skate tips qualified instructors make this the ideal place to take the evolutionary step from plodding flat feet to speedy wheeled wonders.

December 27, 2013, Friday - Live Music at Aster Cafe

Time: 9:00pm $7

Location: Aster Cafe, 125 Main Stree SE

Tonight: Winterset

Winterset is a Minneapolis-based group of the Americana/rock influence. Members include Steven LaFollette (vocals/songwriting/acoustic guitar), Dan Stewart (bass/vocals), Aaron Speer (drums), Cassie LaFollette (mandolin/keys/vocals), and Andrew Carey (electric guitar).

Formed in 2008, frontman Steven LaFollette began playing shows in Saint Paul, Minnesota with various characters.

“Over time, the members of the band have changed, but each individual has provided a unique perspective and creative aspect to the music that makes it in a way nostalgic to me.” – Steven

Winterset began as an outlet for songs that in truth had never been intended for people to hear. Steven has always enjoyed writing, but it was not until he decided to pursue audio production that he began writing songs with the intention to record. Their original purpose was as “practice tunes,” material to record only while studying production. “I felt it would be best to write and record my own music so that if it turned out I was completely garbage at this, I would only be ruining my own recordings and not a clients,” said Steven.

December 21, 2013, Saturday - National Theatre Live: The Habit of Art at St. Anthony Main Theatre

Time: 1:00pm

Location: St. Anthony Main Theatre, 115 Main Street SE

NT Live is a groundbreaking initiative of London's National Theatre that broadcasts the world's finest stage performances to cinema screens in 22 countries around the globe. Through a partnership with the Film Society of Minneapolis/St. Paul, National Theatre Live has moved from the Guthrie across the river to the Film Society's St. Anthony Main Theatre. Tickets are available through the Film Society and are $20 Regular; $15 Film Society members.

The Habit of Art

Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W H Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first for twenty-five years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station.

Alan Bennett’s play is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.
