Time: 6:00pm

Location: The Soap Factory, 514 2nd St. SE

The Common Room Neighborhood Mixtape Tour

The Neighborhood Mixtape Tour takes the concept of the classic mixtape, which channels feelings and ideas through curated musical playlists, and applies this mode of communication to paint an audio-portrait of Minneapolis neighborhoods’ character and characteristics. This bus tour invites you to experience a series neighborhoods interpreted by residents through playlists and commentaries showcasing their neighborhood’s unique flavor and essence.

Common Room is a series of artist-led tours of Twin Cities sites, with each tour themed around a specific concept that the group uses as a lens to explore facets of the urban geography — in the past, these themes have included cats, alleys, skyways, fishing, freeway construction, weather, community kitchens, personal memory, and many more. Common Room is the work by Sergio Vucci and Andy Sturdevant, along with a rotating lineup of contributors. Now in its eighth year, is using the occasion of the Rethinking Public Spaces project to expand the scope of its programming for this summer to travel beyond The Soap Factory, and various neighborhoods of the Twin Cities by foot, bicycle and bus. Common Room’s themes in 2017 will include silence, sacredness, islands, neighborhood music, and more.

About the Artists

Sergio Vucci is a Minneapolis-based artist. He is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his work focuses primarily on engaging his surroundings outside of gallery spaces and on relational interactions, co-authoring ephemeral creative experiences with participants in response to place.

Andy Sturdevant is an artist and writer living in Minneapolis. He is the author of two books of nonfiction, and his artistic projects have been exhibited at venues in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle and elsewhere.

August 29, 2017, Tuesday - Ecological System Plan Community Advisory Committee Meeting at MPRB

Time: 4:306m-6:00pm

Location: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, 2117 West River Road

The next Ecological System Plan Community Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting is scheduled Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017,  at Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board headquarters, 2117 West River Road.

At the meeting, the CAC will determine dates, locations and formats of plan-specific public involvement events, including partnership opportunities with local organizations relating to plan themes (water, air, land, life) and topics (air quality issues, carbon sequestration, urban heat island effect, stormwater runoff, habitat connectivity, habitat quality and biodiversity, and sustainable energy generation). A status update and timeline of next steps regarding plan development will be provided.

Topic: Discuss first plan-specific public involvement event and collaboration with local organizations related to plan themes and topics.

What is the Ecological Systems Plan?

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) are preparing the first-ever Ecological System Plan. This plan will set a vision for making parks and public lands more friendly to the environment.

The Ecological System Plan will seek to first understand the ecology of the city and watershed, then plan for parks and public lands management and improvements that benefit both humans and nature.

It will address specific threats such as climate change, decreasing water quality, explosion of invasive species, increasing runoff, and fragmentation of habitat. It will envision a more environmentally sound way of managing the impacts of the city, so that the city can be cleaner, greener, cooler, and more efficient.

The Ragman - Film Screening w/ The Rolling Stoners

About The Ragman Project - A Hobo's Story Untold:

His name is Michael Bork but most people call him The Ragman. He is a vagabond, yet also a storyteller and songwriter who, over his lifetime, wrote and recorded 100 songs during and about his rail-riding adventures.

The Ragman handed over those hand-written lyrics and sampling of recordings (on a cassette tape… we kid you not!) to a handful of players from the national indie-music scene who became instantly smitten with his Dylan-esque narrative cadence and soon embarked on a musical journey that ultimately became The Ragman Project.

From this music came two things:

A documentary film of The Ragman, titled: A Hobo’s Story Untold

The film showcases Ragman’...s adventures and struggles living what he called a hard life in rail cars, abandoned houses and ditches throughout the United States. Yet out of that life came the pages of lyrics that led The Ragman and an entourage of touring musicians to a recording studio in Lexington, KY. The film is being showcased at Newport Beach Film Festival April 24, 2017.

The Album titled The Ragman Project – A Hobo’s Story Untold

The Ragman Project's first album is a transformation of Michael Bork's original cassette tape demos, into a mesmerizing collection of a unique genre we deem “Dreamscape-Americana” gold. Over 20 musicians from America's indie music scene came together to bring to life The Ragman’s hobo stories, including members of ENEMY PLANES, Vandeveer, Cheyenne Mize, Horse Feathers, and musician and producer Duane Lundy of Lexington KY's Shangri-La Studios, whose credits include (Jim James, Sturgill Simpson, Ben Sollee).

August 26, 2017, Saturday - LEYYA MONA TAWIL: DESTROY// MINNEAPOLIS Opening Reception at The Soap Factory

Time: 8:00PM-10:30PM

Location: Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE

LEYYA MONA TAWIL: DESTROY// MINNEAPOLIS Opening Reception

Destroy//

A new ritual for new times.

Leyya Tawil builds the work on location in one day with local artists.

In performance, the dance destroys itself.

In collaboration with local dancers and musicians, dance artist and composer, Leyya Mona Tawil, will bring her day long performance, ‘Destroy// All Places’, to The Soap Factory. ‘Destroy// All Places’ is a new ritual for new times. The performance is composed, but untethered. The artists attempt a score imbedded with mechanisms that make its execution increasingly impossible, forcing the material into stages of deterioration and evolution. ‘Destroy// All Places’ began in San Francisco in 2012, and has since visited over 23 cities including Saint Petersburg, Rome, Cairo and Athens.  Over 100 artists have participated in the project internationally.

Tawil’s project for The Soap Factory, ‘Destroy// Minneapolis,’ is a metaphor for renewal and resistance. The health of a city is dependent on change; a change that requires destruction as part of the life cycle.

August 26, 2017, Saturday - Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Time: 10:00pm - Noon

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, 415 Main Street SE

Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Future date: September 9 and 30m October 21

Discover the story of the National Historic Landmark Pillsbury A Mill, the largest flour mill in the world for many years, which recently reopened as the A-Mill Artist Lofts. A Mill City Museum guide will lead a tour of the former milling complex, including the rooftop deck and the basement waterpower facilities. Visitors will explore parts of the largest and best-preserved waterpower system in Minneapolis (with views straight down a 50-foot drop shaft); discover how the building functioned during the flour milling era and learn about the new hydroelectric plant that helps to power the complex.

The Pillsbury A Mill was the flagship mill of the Pillsbury Flour Milling Company. The A Mill was not only the largest flour mill in the world when it opened in 1881, it was one of the few architect-designed mills in Minneapolis, designed by Leroy S. Buffington. As such it was an industrial show piece and tourist attraction from the start. The Pillsbury A Mill ceased operation in 2003, and in 2015, the complex was redeveloped as affordable lofts for working artists by Dominium, a Minneapolis-based developer.

Please meet at the gray door on Third Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the A-Mill Artist Loft main entrance at 315 Main Street SE). The tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately-paced walking indoors and outdoors with some uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

This tour is presented in partnership with Dominium, A-Mill Artist Lofts.
