Visitors can also dress up and have their picture taken as a 1950s mill worker and make their own paper hat like women flour packers wore in 1919. By 1919, dozens of women worked as packers on the fifth floor of the Utility Building, which became known as “No Man’s Land.”

March 31, 2018, Saturday - 7 Warrior Women Exhibit Opening at Gamut Gallery

Time: 7:00pm - 11:00pm

7 Warrior Women Exhibit Opening

$5 admission or free with gallery membership - Exhibit runs through April, 20th, 2018

Gamut Gallery is pleased to announce a collaborative exhibition, 7 Warrior Women, produced by collage artist Kristi Abbott opening on March 31, 2018. Inspired to push the boundaries of her technique and subject matter, Abbott led a group of local artists to create a collection of works that center around seven imagined and embodied figures—women from each of the Earth’s seven continents. These mystical and bold feminine characters represent the strength and energy of women around the world and across time. These figures, imagined through costume elements, photographs, paintings, world maps, and other elements, carry certain cultural markers distinctive to their geography and heritage, but their power and beauty speak universally to the essence of the feminine.

Abbott, a native to Australia, carefully forms intricate portraits out of varying types and textures of paper for her collage work. Her portraits are often embedded with hidden images, “small secrets” relating back to some part of the personality or biography of the individual, unlocking their story one detail at a time. Contributing artists include Yuya Negishi, Sarah Epperson, RJ Kern, Kada of Artful Eclectic, and six local models. Negishi, a Japanese mural artist who works with traditional and contemporary imageries, created the spray painted backdrops for each piece, as well as several smaller complimentary pieces that will be presented alongside the seven warriors. Epperson is a tattoo artist, painter, and maker, who contributed to the exhibition through her tattoo-like body paintings adorning each warrior, and created the headdresses and face paint worn by several of the women.

Negishi and Epperson work in a similar way to Abbott, drawing on narrative and conducting thorough research that serves to inform their flowing, energetic images. Kern, a fine art photographer, skillfully captured the essence of strength in the seven warrior women who were directed by Abbott at a recent photo shoot for the project, while Kada translated Abbott’s concepts through makeup and body paint containing iconic imagery on several of the women for the shoot. Those images served as a building block in the creation of the collages, one of the many layers and steps in a thoughtfully choreographed process. The final result is a powerful body of work that illustrates Abbott’s exceptional talent with this dynamic and fresh approach to collage art and collaboration.

Times: See show link below

Location: The Lab Theater, 700 First St. N

Augsburg Music Theater Club presents: The Drowsy Chaperone

March 29 - 31

Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another. With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperonebegins as the man in the chair looks on. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.

March 28, 2018, Wednesday - 5th Annual Dandelion Honey Pastry Chef Challenge

Time: 6 PM - 9 PM

Location: Solar Arts by Chowgirls, 711 15th Ave NE

5th Annual Dandelion Honey Pastry Chef Challenge

Sample desserts from professional pastry chefs using dandelion honey as their sole sweetener served by Minnesota RollerGirls

Special address from Dr. Marla Spivak of the University of MN Bee Lab and polar explorer Ann Bancroft of AccessWater. Live music, art, libations and more.

The 5th Annual Dandelion Honey Pastry Chef Challenge is the annual celebration of our pollinator advocacy campaign Healthy Bees, Healthy Lives. This campaign was instrumental in passing 2 pieces of important pollinator legislation in 2014. We are still actively working to educate the public about the issues facing honey bees and other pollinators. Much progress has been made for pollinators since, due to grassroots efforts bythe many groups and citizens spreading awareness and taking individual actions. However, as we battle an anti-environment, pro industrial agriculture administration, there has never been a more challenging time for our precious pollinators. As beekeepers, business owners and people concerned about where our food comes from, we know from experience that we must advocate for the honey bee and all pollinators struggling to live in our modern systems of agriculture, eco-systems and urban landscapes.

At last years event we introduced a new theme and sent over 100 postcards to Governor Dayton asking for Healthy Water, Healthy Bees. In recognition of the fact that the very same systems hurting our pollinators are also contaminating the water, we are once again partnering with local polar explorer and environmental advocator Ann Bancroft to highlight Access Water. In an effort to further unify, broaden and strengthen the environmental movement, the theme this year will be Maintaining Momentum for Healthy Bees, Healthy Water, Healthy Lives.

March 25, 2018, Sunday - Cochon555 - Epic Culinary Competition at Loews Minneapolis

Time: 5 PM - 8 PM

Location:  Loews Minneapolis Hotel, 601 1st Avenue N

Cochon555 - Epic Culinary Competition at Loews Minneapolis

With an all-star cast of chefs who specialize in whole animal cooking paired with farmers responsibly raising delicious heritage breed pigs, Cochon555 returns to Minneapolis on March 25. The all-inclusive feast hosted by the beautiful Loews Minneapolis Hotel will feature a hundred-plus prominent chefs, farmers, sommeliers, distillers, brewers and barkeeps all working in concert to create luxurious moments that educate the palate.

Cochon555 is proud to announce this year’s group of cutting-edge chefs from across the city, each cooking one whole heritage breed pig raised by a family farm. The competing chefs include Host Chef Tim Fischer of Loews Minneapolis Hotel, Daniel del Prado of Martina, Karyn Ann Tomlinson ofCorner Table, Russell Klein of Meritage, and Remy Pettus of BARDO. One week before the event, each chef receives a 200-pound heritage breed pig sustainably sourced from Hidden Stream FarmLucky George Farm, Spring Wolf Farms, YKer Acres, and Kerns Farm, respectively, to create a maximum of 6 dishes for competition. With dozens of bites from iconic local chefs, boutique distillers, and artisan winemakers, the event is akin to an epic tasting menu of heritage breed pork with endless beverage pairings enjoyed standing up.

To win the friendly competition for a cause, a chef’s menu must woo twenty celebrity judges with their “Judge’s Plate” scored on utilization; technique; and overall flavor and be voted “best bite of the day” by guests. The winning “Prince or Princess of Pork” in Minneapolis will advance to the national finale, Grand Cochon, a head-to-tail, winner-takes-all showdown for the crown in Chicago on September 30. Additionally, running in tandem are two satellite beverage competitions to complement the whole-animal tilt; Punch Kings, a whole bottle, large-format spirit competition featuring five top barkeeps in a hand-crafted punch challenge and Somm Smackdown, a face-off of five top sommeliers pairing the best wine with heritage pig.

Placing the spotlight on “knowing where your food comes from," each event features an educational whole animal butchery program called the Pop-Up Butcher Shop and Silent Auction to benefit charity. This year’s headlining all-star butcher is Scott Pampuch of Fulton Brewing. Together with gifts from chefs, sponsors and John Boos & Co., they will raise money to benefit Piggy Bank, a start-up farm in Missouri that serves as a kickstarter for new family farms and a safety net for those in the wake of a disaster (flood, fire and disease). As an accelerator, Piggy Bank supplies piglets to small farms in exchange for business plans that are posted online in the name of transparent “open-source agriculture.”

At any given event, over a hundred-plus cooks, chefs, restaurant and bar owners, renowned sommeliers and barkeeps, can be found working in concert to create luxurious moments. We work with every type of restaurant and bar imaginable – from farm-to-table to Michelin star - and all participating chefs share one core value: they source products responsibly. If you like tasty pig, our goal is to buy the "best breeds" from farmers doing it the "right way". Your support benefits our foundation project, Piggy Bank, a start-up farm in Missouri that serves as a kickstarter for new family farms and a safety net for those in the wake of a disaster (fire, flood, and disease).

SIGNATURE FOOD EXPERIENCE: Over 1500 Pounds of Heritage Pig, 5 Chefs Cooking Whole Hog, Cocina De La Familia aka Asador de Pastor pop-up, Starter Bar with Cures, Pates and Foie, Signature Cheese Bar, Luxe Butter Bar, Tartare Bar w. • Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928 and 1991

March 24, 2018, Saturday - Minnesota Endo March

Minnesota Endo March

The Minnesota Endo March is the local Minnesota extension of the Worldwide Endometriosis March hosted and produced by the Minnesota Endo Warriors. March is endometriosis awareness month and on the last Saturday groups around the world gather to raise awareness and advocate for women with endometriosis.

Event Timeline

11:00-11:30 am | Registration Open
11:30-12:00 pm | Alchemy-style warm-up class for all levels
12:00-12:45 pm | March from Alchemy across the Stone Arch Bridge
1:00-3:00 pm | Post-March Celebration
The celebration will be a “Happy Hour” style event with hosted hors-d’oeuvres, non-alcoholic beverages, beer, and wine. Local endometriosis specialists will have the opportunity to speak and women living with endometriosis can share their stories. This is a family-friendly event and all are welcome. The actual march will only be about 1/2 a mile.

What is Endo?

Endometriosis is a chronic disease that affects the lives of over 176 million women around the world. One in every ten women are affected by this disease where the inner lining of the uterus (the womb), called the endometrium, grows outside the uterus involving other organs. This can cause inflammation and severe pain. In addition, women who are diagnosed with endometriosis may have painful bladder syndrome, digestive or gastrointestinal symptoms similar to a bowel disorder, as well as fatigue, tiredness or lack of energy, pelvic pain, painful intercourse and infertility. The cause of endometriosis is still unknown although women have been suffering for centuries. On average it takes 9 years for women to receive a diagnosis of endometriosis and proper diagnosis requires laparoscopic surgery, which is a significant barrier to care. Recognizing the symptoms and advocating for their health, women face an uphill battle. The Minnesota Endo March is an opportunity to show these women that Minnesota cares.
