May 23, 2013, Thursday - Groundbreaking Ceremony for Sheridan Veterans Memorial

Time: 10:00am

Location: Sheridan Memorial Park, 1300 Water Street NE

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and Park Board Commissioner Liz Wielinski will hold a special ceremonial groundbreaking event for the Sheridan Veterans Memorial at Sheridan Memorial Park on Thursday, May 23, 2013. The public is invited to attend.

Citizens of northeast Minneapolis, along with veterans from multiple wars, have worked tirelessly to make this memorial along the Mississippi River a reality. “The Veteran’s Memorial is a thank you to those who stepped forward to serve, a tribute to those whose lives were lost or forever altered, and a living reminder of our hope for a world with lasting peace.” said State Representative, Diane Loeffler. Representative Loeffler was responsible for shepherding the project through the legislature for the state funding that was needed to plan and construct the project.

Commissioner Wielinski added, “We especially want to thank the following individuals and groups for their support of this project: The State of Minnesota, the Puzak Family (who donated some of the land for the park), Jenny Fortman and the Sheridan Neighborhood Organization, and all of the many veterans who helped create the vision for this space, most especially veterans Ed Karbo who led the initial charge, and Howard Weller who followed it through to the final stages.”

Back in 1995, a group of veterans led by Karbo began looking for a site to commemorate war veterans. They joined forces with the Sheridan Neighborhood Organization (SNO) in 2005 to site the memorial in what was formerly Water Street Park—now renamed Sheridan Memorial Park. SNO and the veterans have raised thousands of dollars in contributions.

The veteran’s memorial will be located at the south end of the Sheridan Memorial Park, with an overlook at the edge of the Mississippi River. It will honor all military veterans from the ten conflicts in which Minnesotans have served. Plans call for a central sculpture on a circular plaza surrounded by five concentric rings made up of lawn, a perimeter walk, benches and markers, and peace gardens. Closely planted trees will comprise the outermost ring. Ten of the markers will each bear a description of one of the ten conflicts. An eleventh “empty” marker will represent the ever potential threat of war, reminding us to strive for peace. The sculpture and eleven markers are being created by local artist Robert Smart. The perimeter walk will be punctuated with pavers engraved with quotes about peace.

Construction of the memorial park will take place during the summer and fall with a grand opening date slated for Veteran’s Day November 11, 2013.

The program for the groundbreaking ceremony will feature the presenting and retrieving of flags by Fridley Shaddrick and Labeau American Legion Post 303, comments by neighborhood representatives and elected officials, the official groundbreaking, and the presentation of a memorial wreath to recognize all veterans as a prelude to the Memorial Day weekend.

All are welcome to join in the celebration.

May 22, 2013, Wednesday - Happy Hour with a Preservationist: Anson Strong Brooks Mansion on Park Avenue

Time: 5:30 to 7pm

Location: 2445 Park Avenue

** THIS EVENT IS FREE, BUT SPACE IS LIMITED TO 65 PEOPLE, AND YOU NEED A RESERVATION.**

RESERVE YOUR TICKET(S) ON EVENTBRITE.

Architect: Long and Long

Minneapolis’ own “Downton Abbey,” 2445 Park Avenue is an exercise in what celebrated architectural historian Larry Millett refers to as “a rare example of the Venetian Gothic style in the Twin Cities” and “a little piece of Venice on Park Ave.”* Built in 1907 for lumber baron Anson Strong Brooks and designed by father-son team Long and Long (the elder having designed some of the city’s most prolific buildings, including the Richardsonian Romanesque Minneapolis City Hall), the imposing Brooks Mansion is constructed almost entirely of limestone with carved sandstone details. Inside, it’s a showplace for a lumber baron, replete with Circassian walnut, mahogany, and quarter-sawn oak.

The mansion is currently for sale for the first time in nearly two decades. This event offers a rare glimpse into one of Historic Park Avenue’s most impressive—and intact—gems. Park Avenue Historian Ryan Knoke will present on the history of the mansion and its context on the Minneapolis “Golden Mile.”

Minnesota Literacy Council Sixth Annual Journeys Reading and Awards Ceremony

The Minnesota Literacy Council and Loft Literary Center are hosting a celebration of adult literacy and the many students who have overcome many barriers, including language and culture, to reach their educational goals.

The evening will begin with a ceremony where adult literacy students, volunteers, and community partners will receive awards recognizing their outstanding achievements. It also will feature student readings, where sixty adult literacy learners will share their original stories and poems. Several of the readers are authors featured in Journeys, An Anthology of Adult Student Writings. All of them are adult literacy students enrolled in English as a Second Language, GED, reading and other basic skills classes across the state. They demonstrate inspiring courage by choosing to improve their lives through education and by sharing their experiences at this event.

The event is free and open to the public. To ensure seating is available for everyone, pre-registration is required. Visit http://mnliteracy.org/educators/journeys-reading-awards-ceremony to register after April 22.

Journeys is an annual publication by the Minnesota Literacy Council that includes stories of hope, loss, and struggle, alongside poignant reflections of everyday life written by Minnesotans whose voices are rarely heard. Some are written by immigrants or refugees writing in their second or third language, while others are sharing their writing for the first time after years of frustration and anxiety attributed to low literacy skills. The book will be available at the event and online at http://www.mnliteracy.org/.

May 19, 2013, Sunday - East Hennepin: Behind the Scenes with Preserve Minneapolis

Time: 10:00am

Location: Meet at the corner of Main Street SE and East Hennepin Avenue (Riverplace)

Preserve Minneapolis presents East Hennepin: Behind the Scenes

Cost: $8 per person.  Buy tickets on Eventbrite.

The bustling commercial district surrounding East Hennepin Avenue has hosted many names throughout the years, but everyone knows its unforgettable landmarks: Surdyk’s, Nye’s, Kramarczuk’s, Historic Main Street, and Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Located across the Hennepin Bridge from downtown, this neighborhood was originally established in 1855 as the town of Saint Anthony Falls; it merged with the city of Minneapolis in 1872. Its proximity to the Mississippi River, downtown, the University of Minnesota, and Northeast Minneapolis have made the neighborhood an influential hub for transit, industry, and commerce. The last decade has brought dramatic change and the area around East Hennepin is now considered one of the trendiest and most exciting places in Minneapolis to eat, shop, and live. Fortunately, the area has managed to maintain its Old World flavor.

Join us for a “behind-the-scenes” history of the busy streets, unique businesses, and colorful people that have shaped this popular walking neighborhood. Hear amazing stories told from the perspective of individuals who have lived and worked here, through good times and bad, across the neighborhood’s defining eras.
