Now in it's seventh season, Common Room began as a month-long series of interactive art events, out of a refurbished art deco office at The Soap Factory. Since 2011, Sergio Vucci and Andy Sturdevant have taken the Common Room concept outside the four walls of The Soap Factory and into the city, activating public spaces and redefining our relationship with our surroundings.

Minneapolis History Pub Crawl: Old Saint Anthony

Discover the city’s oldest neighborhoods in this narrated bus tour of the east bank of the Mississippi River. The town of St. Anthony began on the east side of St. Anthony Falls in 1849, several years before its upstart neighbor Minneapolis across the river. A guide will tell the stories of the people who lived and worked on the east side while visiting the location of historic flour mills, churches, red light districts, Victorian residences, pubs, immigrant enclaves, commercial centers, breweries, and more. The tour includes stops at significant historic places and two watering holes in historic buildings. Ages 21 and up only. Drink purchases are not included in the tour price. Drink specials will be made available at participating locations.

The tour includes three blocks of moderately-pace walking on uneven surfaces. If someone in your party uses a cane, wheelchair, walker, or has otherwise limited mobility, please call at least two weeks in advance of your tour so we can do our best to accommodate their needs. Tours are held rain or shine. Please dress accordingly.

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A museum interpreter will take visitors into the building’s many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years and the many changes to the building over time.

This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its non-public spaces. The tour includes admission to the museum gallery, Baking Lab, Water Lab and Flour Tower show.

This Photo Safari takes place on the West end of the Stone Arch Bridge. We photograph Mill Ruins Park, then walk up to the Guthrie Theatre and photograph this fabulous buildings exterior from all angles..We conclude the tour at the well lit I35W Bridge Memorial Site.

Before we begin, we will have a short presentation covering basic principles of low light/night photography. When darkness sets in, this area comes alive with interesting lights. We will help you capture stunning night images you are sure to want to frame.

This safari is best done with a digital SLR or a better quality digital point and shoot with advanced scene modes. Your Safari guide / photographer will be carrying a Sony digital point and shoot to demonstrate the techniques we will be covering. For this safari, a sturdy tripod an absolute necessity... Midwest Photo Safari can provide pro-quality rental tripods on request. A remote shutter release is also very handy to have along, or you may use the "self timer" feature of your camera.

Tour guests will discover the dramatic story of disasters on the Minneapolis riverfront. The area around St. Anthony Falls has been transformed many times during the rise and fall of the greatest milling district the world has ever seen. These changes led to some of the biggest and most tragic disasters in Minnesota history. On this tour, a Mill City Museum guide will tell the stories of fires, floods, explosions, collapses and other calamities; explore the consequences for the people involved; and highlight what these tales reveal about Minneapolis history. Among the stories highlighted will be the Eastman Tunnel Collapse in 1869, the Great Conflagration of 1893, bridge collapses in 1859 and 2007, numerous fires and massive landscape changes.

The tour includes 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility. The tour will begin and end at Mill City Museum, where participants can visit the museum’s gallery, included in the price of the tour. Cost of this tour is $14 for adults, $12 seniors and college students, $10 children ages 6-17 and MNHS members. This price includes museum admission. With the closing of the Upper Harbor Terminal along the Mississippi Riverfront in North Minneapolis at the end of 2014, 48 acres will be available for development.
 
Join a panel of local experts as we discuss the question:     
 
How do we redevelop in a way that both creates jobs and provides a meaningful place to live, work and interact with our environment?  What does that mean in an urban setting?
