Over 700 Twin Cities Metro Area Youth Expected to Attend 10th Annual Minneapolis Teen Job and Opportunity Fair on Saturday, April 30

On Saturday, April 30, over 700 teens are expected to attend the 10th annual Minneapolis Teen Job and Opportunity Fair taking place at the Hennepin County Library - Minneapolis Central from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The event is free to attend and pre-registration is not required.

The Minneapolis Teen Job and Opportunity Fair is a great way for teens aged 14 to 19 to connect to job-search resources and find out more about available volunteer, internship, training, and employment opportunities.  More than forty businesses and organizations are expected to exhibit including TJ Maxx, Mall of America, Lunds and Byerlys, and Home Depot.

Teens should come dressed to impress, prepared to network with potential employers, and distribute resumes.  Hennepin County librarians will be on hand with laptops, a scanner, and a printer, as well as support in finding resources to support the teens’ job/career/opportunity searches.  A complete list of exhibitors can be found available on the City of Minneapolis website.  The event can also be followed on social media by using the hashtag #levelup2k16.

April 29, 2016, Friday - Logan Park Hosts 2016 Minneapolis Arbor Day Celebration

Help plant 130 new trees in Logan Park!  Event features free food for kids, beer garden, food trucks and much more.

Join the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB), Northeast Minneapolis neighbors and tree lovers of all ages at the 2016 Minneapolis Arbor Day Celebration at Logan Park on Friday, April 29, 4-8 pm. This spectacular celebration of trees offers something fun for the whole family and the opportunity to help plant more than 130 new trees at Logan Park.

The party starts at 4 pm with landscape-scale yard games like giant checkers using tree cookies, tree-sized ladder golf and giant Kubb, bucket truck rides and rope-and-saddle tree climbing supervised by professional arborists. For kids, there will be a tree-themed nature play zone, bounce house and free dinner sponsored by Minneapolis Public Schools from 4 pm to 6 pm (people aged 18 and under while supplies last).

Arborists will lead waves of tree planting excursions throughout the park beginning at every half hour interval between 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm. Family-friendly kickball games and a free concert by Your Community Band begin at 5 pm, and a special tree planting ceremony is scheduled for 6 pm. The MPRB Forestry Department will leave a large pile of free woodchips at the park for the public to take home and use in their yards and gardens.

The MPRB is also partnering with Brewing a Better Forest to offer a beer garden featuring local breweries 612 Brew, Fair State, Dangerous Man and Sociable Cider Werks, and coffee from Matchbox Coffee Shop. The Bacon-Me-Crazy and Simply Steve’s food trucks will be cooking up and selling delicious treats along 13th Avenue beginning at 4 pm.

Activities: Kickball, tree planting, bucket truck rides, bounce house, tree climbing, yard games, nature play zone, free woodchips, Adopt-A-Tree program through Brewing a Better Forest.

Music: Your Community Band, a large brass marching ensemble borne out of Powderhorn’s infamous May Day Parade, will perform beginning at 5 pm.

Food/Drink: Food trucks, free healthy dinners for kids under 18 provided by Minneapolis Public Schools, beer garden featuring local craft breweries and coffee

Fun Fact: The 45th parallel, which marks the exact halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole, runs directly through Logan Park.

This year, hundreds of restaurants in the Twin Cities, Duluth and Mankato are participating in Dining Out for Life® by donating a percentage of their April 28 proceeds to The Aliveness Project.

Founded in 1985, The Aliveness Project is a local nonprofit organization and community center providing on-site meals, food shelf options, integrative therapies, and vital services for individuals living with HIV/AIDS throughout Minnesota.  75% of their members live in poverty and depend on them for daily meals.

In our downtown and riverfront neighborhoods, participating restaurants include (but are not limited to) Haute Dish, J.D. Hoyt's, Sawatdee, Wilde Cafe and Spirits, Day Block, Kramarczuk's, The Bulldog, Red Cow, Red Stag Supperclub, Republic Seven Corners, Ginger Hop and The Draft Horse.

We have hauled these biases around with us long enough, and it’s time to take a look at them in a new way and maybe start to lighten up from the burden they bring. Guests include Alison Beattie of MPLS MadWomen, Erin Farrell of Space 150, and Chad Gillard of GoKart Labs & Midwest Pantry and the conversation will be facilitated by Professional Humans Elli Rader and Josh Berg.

The leadership of the East Downtown Council invites you to attend a special multi-organizational meeting on Monday, April 25, 6pmat North Central University’s Trask Worship Center located at 910 Elliot Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55404. This meeting will provide an overview of the multi-year district branding process, present a distilled slate of three potential names for our district, and solicit feedback from the audience. The featured presenter of the meeting will be Kelly O’Keefe, Professor, Creative Brand Management at Virginia Commonwealth University, a national voice who has worked on brand initiatives with cities, universities, businesses, non-profits, and neighborhoods.  

Still wondering what this initiative is all about? There has been a great deal of media coverage on our initiative with the Star Tribune providing the following concise statement of intent:

“With so many different uses popping up at once, developers and community leaders are left wondering whether this is becoming a tourism district or an up-and-coming residential neighborhood, a place to relax and recreate or a place for diverse-income housing and human services. The East Downtown Council says that it can be all, but that a larger umbrella name is needed to describe the district so that one portion of it doesn’t hijack the identity or fall short of capturing all that it offers.”

Did you know that Pillsbury Hall was built in 1887 and is the second oldest building on the Twin Cities Campus of the University of Minnesota? Pillsbury Hall is on the National Register of Historic Buildings as part of the "old campus district."

This Instameet will be a walking exploration of the University campus starting at Pillsbury Hall with coffee and then a tour of the building where you will hear about renovation plans.

We will have a mid-meet check-in point at McNamara Plaza and then ending the meet at the Weisman Art Museum (@weismanartmuseum) with a self-directed scavenger hunt!

We will point out other places of photographic interest as we explore the campus - if you haven't been on campus in awhile (or ever!), this is a great opportunity to check out many of the beautiful places on campus.

You can meet a real bald eagle, and talk to The Raptor Center (11am-12pm) about the comeback these iconic river birds have made from the brink of extinction. Learn to cast properly with Ranger Gordon, while learning about the fish found in the river. Examine real aquatic bugs who live at the bottom of the river, and capture a bug picture with our photo stand to take home.

(The Raptor Center will have their live bald eagle and three other raptors at the Visitor Center from 11am-12pm. All other activities continue until 2pm.) This program is free, open to the public, and no reservations are required.
