A National Park River Site, Native Plants, and You! 

Looking for something fun and rewarding to do on a Saturday morning? Consider joining a group of volunteers to maintain a demonstration prairie at Mill Ruins Park. This native prairie attracts many bees, butterflies, and birds while improving the Mississippi River shoreline habitat.

The crew will meet at the St. Anthony Falls Visitor Center on the following Saturday mornings from 9am-noon:

July 13 & 20, August 17 & 31, September 14 & 21, and October 5 & 12

Led by a trained National Park Service (NPS) volunteer, this crew is also sponsored by the Mississippi Park Connection and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. All tools, such as gloves, are provided.

Old Minneapolis Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis 

The Old Minneapolis Walking Tour is co-sponsored by Preserve Minneapolis and Meet Minneapolis, with research supported by the Minnesota Historical Society. The tour will walk down Nicollet Mall from 5th Street to the river, then down river to St. Anthony Falls, the Stone Arch Bridge and the Mill City Museum.

The tour will explore the history of and the contrast between the old buildings along Nicollet and Bridge Square as well as focus on the development of the river since 1855. The tour will end at the Mill City Museum where guests will have their choice of viewing the museum or receiving a pass for another day. In addition to the Mill City Museum, guests will be able to take in the Mill City Farmers Market, held under the train shed of the Museum and the Chicago Plaza, next to the Guthrie Theater.

Please note that this tour ends at the Mill City Farmers Market, which is 1 mile from the starting location. Tour participants should plan on making their return trip on foot or by taking the METRO Blue/Green Line (ticket not included).

The tour walks 2 miles and is not ADA accessible.

Tour guide Michael Rainville, Sr. is a 5th generation resident of NE Minneapolis. He is a graduate of DeLaSalle High School and St. Thomas and Notre Dame Universities. He has worked for the Minneapolis Convention & Visitors Association for 34 years, watching the city evolve.

The CHERRiSH Life Time Tri Minneapolis allows you to "Race the Lakes" and more! The race starts with a swim in the calm, warm waters of Lake Nokomis. Next, racers bike the beautiful roads overlooking the Mississippi River and surrounding Lake Harriet. The event finishes with a run around Nokomis and a finish line that lets right into our amazing post-race festival.

The race features the International Distance, a .93 mile swim, a 24.8 mile bike and a 6.2 mile run; the Sprint Distance features a .47-mile swim, 15-mile bike and 3.1-mile run; and the SuperSprint Distance features a .25-mile swim, 3.92-mile bike and 2.41-mile run.

Take a guided walking tour of the Minneapolis riverfront and learn about its dramatic past and bright future.

Visit the historic district at St. Anthony Falls, once the milling center of the world and now a growing cultural, recreational, and residential neighborhood. Stop along the Stone Arch Bridge for spectacular views of the falls, view historic buildings surrounding the riverfront and downtown Minneapolis, and learn about the many people who have worked and lived in the area over the years. 

Plus, view photographs showing how the area has changed through time, and learn about the Minneapolis riverfront renaissance of the last 40 years through historic preservation of Mill Ruins Park, Mill City Museum, Milwaukee Road Depot, historic loft condominiums, and new developments, including the Guthrie Theater, MacPhail Center for Music, and riverfront housing.

Tour highlights include:

  • the Pillsbury A Mill, a National Historic Landmark
  • the Washburn A Mill, a National Historic Landmark
  • the Stone Arch Bridge, a National Historic Engineering Landmark
  • St. Anthony Falls, the only significant waterfall on the Mississippi River

This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Take a trip down memory lane with people whose memories are failing them. Relive those nostalgic days when cool bomb shelters were all the rage. Go ahead and ask it - "Were the good old days really all that good?" 

Hot Dog Daze comes to you courtesy of Interact's 40+ actors with and without disabilities. Hot Dog Daze is directed by James Lekatz and Heather Bunch, original music by award-winning composer Aaron Gabriel, combined with choreography by Kymani Kahlil and the talents of side-splitting Emcees, Brave New Workshop veteran Shanan Custer and Blackout Improv. founding member Kory LaQuess Pullam. After the show, keep it going with drinks at the outdoor beer garden. A Minnesota summer won't last long, so grab some while you can!

Come on out and bike with a ranger this summer! This program is a family-friendly way to explore the Mississippi River led by a park ranger. This ride will begin at The Commons in downtown Minneapolis where stops will be made to talk about the history of the river. Bikes and helmets will not be provided on this program.

Space is limited to 20 people. Please register and plan to arrive 15 minutes early in order to start the event on time. Bring your own bike and helmet or rent one from a nearby bike sharing platform.

July 11, 2019, Thursday - Hennepin Island Hydropower Tour with the Mill City Museum

Location: Tours begin at the gray door on 3rd Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the main entrance at 315 Main Street SE).

Future dates:  July 25; August 8 and 22

Explore the history of waterpower at St. Anthony Falls, including special access to view the exterior of an operating Xcel Energy hydroelectric plant. During the early 20th century, more than two dozen mills and hydroelectric plants used the waterpower from St. Anthony Falls; today just one is left: Xcel's Hennepin Island Hydroelectric Plant.

On this tour, a Mill City Museum guide will lead participants to Hennepin Island and Father Hennepin Bluffs Park, including special access to the grounds of the power plant. Along the way, learn about the historic uses of waterpower at the falls for flour milling, sawmilling, and hydroelectricity, the role of hydroelectricity in Xcel Energy's green energy and energy efficiency initiatives, and the future of waterpower on the Minneapolis riverfront.

This tour is presented in partnership with Xcel Energy and is for ages 10 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces, as well as climbing up and down several flights of stairs. Some historic locations on this tour are not wheelchair-accessible.

Melon Treats is a pop-up ice cream shop open for 8 weeks only, starting July 11th. As a whole, Melon Treats will directly support Love Your Melon's philanthropic mission and donate 50% of its profit to pediatric cancer research, therapeutic treatments, and family support.

Ice cream, pre-packaged treats, drinks, and apparel will be available for purchase at Melon Treats. The ice cream will be affordable at $5 and each treat will feature a large shareable cup of ice cream. Customers can choose up to 3 flavors and there will be sprinkles and a sugar cone on top of each cup.

Join us at the Melon Treats Grand Opening on Thursday, July 11th! The first 250 people in line starting at 3pm will receive a token to claim a free Melon Treats ice cream cup.
