Lunch and Learn TOUR: Health from Patient to Planet
Viewing health beyond the services provided, Hennepin Healthcare set a high goal for its new six-story ambulatory care center. In this session, a team panel will explore the process and strategies used to make the Clinic & Specialty Center a LEED Gold v2009 facility and asset for patients and the neighborhood.
Straddling the intersection between a historic downtown residential neighborhood, an emerging residential high-rise area and a redeveloped entertainment district, Hennepin Healthcare’s 384,000-square-foot Clinic & Specialty Center is the first major expansion for the organization in 40 years. From that start the facility was seen as an opportunity to create a new image of the care organization long defined by its large safety-net hospital and renowned emergency care center.
In the session, “Health from Patient to Planet,” Hennepin Healthcare and the design team will examine why and how the organization established and maintained its goal for LEED certification as it consolidated more than 25 clinics, dental, and outpatient surgery into a single, multi-story facility. The panelists will discuss the challenges a healthcare facility of this size presents in pursuing LEED and how the project exceeded its LEED certification goal to achieve LEED BD+C v2009 Gold.
With the Clinic & Specialty Center sited across from Hennepin County Medical Center, the Hennepin Healthcare campus enabled the focus of the LEED efforts for the facility to frequently expand beyond its “LEED Project Boundary.” Not as obvious a choice as it might look, the site, itself, gave some of the greatest opportunity for the organization to promote its sustainable objectives by bringing back to life an underutilized brownfield block in downtown Minneapolis.
The team will spotlight how goal-setting and commitment helped Hennepin Healthcare prioritize LEED starting with the patient and the indoor environment to the neighbors and the broader impact the facility would have on the surrounding community. Strategies for managing energy consumption in an infection-controlled environment and within a district energy zone will be discussed along with the importance and limitations of optimizing water usage in a healthcare facility both inside and outside the building.

For more than 150 years, the West Bank neighborhood has been a haven for immigrants from all over the world and home to a thriving arts scene, including the famous folk and blues scene of the 1960s.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the neighborhood became home to college students, artists, and citizens who successfully resisted urban renewal plans that threatened to destroy the character of the neighborhood. The legacies of welcoming newcomers and supporting the arts continue today. The tour will visit some iconic watering holes and tour participants will hear from neighborhood insiders.
This tour includes 1.5 miles of moderately-paced walking on uneven terrain. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility. Some historic locations on this tour offer limited accessibility.
Future date: Sunday, August 18
Time: 12 PM - 1:30 PM

Preserve Minneapolis presents: Historic East Hennepin Walking Tour
The bustling commercial district surrounding East Hennepin Avenue has hosted many names throughout the years, but everyone knows its unforgettable landmarks...Surdyk's, Kramarczuk's, Historic Main Street, and Lourdes Church.
Located across the Hennepin Bridge from Downtown, this neighborhood was originally established in 1855 as the Town of St. Anthony Falls and later merged with The City of Minneapolis in 1872. Its proximity to the Mississippi River, Downtown, the University, and Northeast Minneapolis have made it an influential hub for transit, industry, and commerce. The last decade has brought dramatic change and the area around East Hennepin is now considered one of the trendiest and most exciting places in Minneapolis to eat, shop, and live. Fortunately, the area has managed to maintain its old-world flavor to this day.
Join us for a “behind-the-scenes” history of the busy streets, unique businesses, and colorful people that have shaped this popular walking neighborhood. Hear amazing stories told from the perspective of individuals who have lived and worked here, through good times and bad. Come away with perspectives on what life and work here might have actually felt like throughout this neighborhood’s most defining eras.
Please note that this tours ends at the Ard Godfrey House, which is a short, 5-minute walk from the starting location.
This tour will walk approximately 1.5 miles. The tour is ADA accessible.
Scott Parkin is a residential realtor with a storefront office right along the tour route. He is the past president of the NE Mpls Business Association and has been active in the development and business community along East Hennepin Ave since 1993.
Michael Rainville, Sr. is a 5th generation resident of NE Minneapolis. He is a graduate of DeLaSalle High School and St. Thomas and Notre Dame Universities. He has worked for the Minneapolis Convention & Visitors Association for 34 years, watching the city evolve.
