On this bus tour, we'll meet some of the fishermen and -women themselves, along with park rangers, naturalists, chefs, fishing enthusiasts and others, as well as visiting bait shops, seafood restaurants, national park sites, and of course a few of the city's best fishin' holes.

July 23, 2014, Wednesday - Murder and Mayhem with Kate Racculia at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave S

Murder and Mayhem with Kate Racculia

About Bellweather Rhapsody: Fifteen years ago, a murder/suicide in room 712 rocked the grand old Bellweather Hotel and the young bridesmaid who witnessed it. Now hundreds of high school musicians, including quiet bassoonist Rabbit Hatmaker and his brassy diva twin, Alice, have gathered in its cavernous, crumbling halls for the annual Statewide festival; the grown-up bridesmaid has returned to face her demons; and a snowstorm is forecast that will trap everyone on the grounds. Then one of the orchestra’s stars disappears—from room 712. Is it a prank, or has murder struck the Bellweather once again?

The search for answers entwines a hilariously eccentric cast of characters—conductors and caretakers, failures and stars, teenagers on the verge and adults trapped in memories. For everyone has come to the Bellweather with a secret, and everyone is haunted.

Full of knowing nods to the shivery pleasures of suspense and the transporting power of music, this is a wholly winning new novel from a writer lauded as “charming” (Los Angeles Times), “witty” (O, The Oprah Magazine), and “whimsical” (People).

Kate Racculia is a writer and researcher living in Boston, Massachusetts. Her first novel, This Must Be the Place, was published by Henry Holt & Company in 2010. Her second, Bellweather Rhapsody, was just published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in May 2014. Kate studied illustration, design, Jane Austen, and Canada at the University of Buffalo. She has her MFA from Emerson College, and teaches novel and genre-fiction workshops at Grub Street, Boston’s nonprofit creative writing community. She has been a bookseller, a planetarium operator, a coffee jerk, a designer, and a proposal writer. She posts many pictures of her cat on the Internet, is a total sucker for a saxophone solo, and has every intention of growing up to be Jessica Fletcher.

7:00PM / DAN COLLISON, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, EAST DOWNTOWN COUNCIL
“Shaping the Future of the East Downtown District”
Downtown Minneapolis is in the throws of unprecedented growth. This is now undisputed.  But, how will the growth be stewarded such that it transforms the built environment into a home for tens of thousands of residents while playing host for tens of millions? Such a dialectic tension is undoubtedly on the mind of those who live downtown and on the riverfront. At this MDNA meeting Dan Collison, the newly appointed Executive Director of the East Downtown Council (EDC), will discuss the new role of the EDC alongside the Minneapolis Downtown Council, introduce a new East Downtown Development task force, and frame some of the critically important convergence points that residential, business, and civic leaders will need to work on together in order to ensure our part Downtown Minneapolis is built beautifully, holistically, and with 21st century sustainable practices in mind.

7:20PM / KATHLEEN BOE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MINNEAPOLIS RIVERFRONT PARTNERSHIP

"Another disruption on the Mill District Riverfront?"
After the All-Star Gala tonight, can we take yet another event?  Not to worry.  The August 2 event for meeting planners will be much smaller and should be much less disruptive.

July 20, 2014, Sunday - Bluff Street Extension Ceremony and Ride

Bluff Street extension of the Dinkytown Greenway

On Sunday, July 20, 1-2 PM, we celebrate the opening of the Bluff Street tunnel, a new extension of the Dinkytown Greenway! The tunnel connects cyclists directly from Bridge 9 into downtown Mpls, the Mississippi River bike trails & bike lanes on 2nd Street.

Join Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and City Council Members Frey and Gordon for a celebration of the Bluff Street Extension of the Dinkytown Greenway.

When the Dinkytown Greenway opened last summer, it provided a bike/ped path from Bridge 9 to TCF Bank Stadium and the U of M Transitway bike/bus route. This summer, the new Bluff Street tunnel extension under I-35W connects cyclists directly from downtown Minneapolis to Bridge 9 (the tunnel entrance is on 13th Ave S, between 2nd St S and West River Parkway). Both projects received federal funding from the Bike Walk Twin Cities federal Nonmotorized Transporation Pilot Program, administered by Transit for Livable Communities. Join us in celebrating this exciting bike/ped connection!

Council members Frey and Gordon will lead two rides to the celebration:
•From downtown Minneapolis: Meet CM Frey at 1:00pm at Gateway Park (Hennepin at 2nd Street S) and join him on a ride to the ceremony
•From the east bank: Meet CM Gordon at 1:00pm at TCF Bank Stadium (between gates C & D, on SE 23rd St) and join him on a ride to the ceremony.

Remarks will be at 1:30. Afterwards, join elected officials for a ride through the tunnel.
