February 20, 2020, Thursday - Midwest Premiere of Alligator Summer: A Southern Gothic Atrocity at The Southern Theater

Location: The Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Ave S

Midwest Premiere of Alligator Summer: A Southern Gothic Atrocity

Alligator Summer is the memory play of young Antietam Julep coming of age during a reptilian rapture in 1940s Louisiana. Sequestered with his family, and the neighbors who have well-outstayed their welcome, Antietam discovers that the real blood-thirsty beasts are not the ones that lurk below. With wit, gore, sentiment, idiocy, archetypes, accents, and gators, Alligator Summer is the guiltiest of pleasures for the refined sadist in all of us.

“Alligator Summer draws from dark comedy, parody, melodrama, lyrical speeches, and the absurd. It most closely resembles a Martin McDonagh play set in Tennessee Williams’ scrapbook. Through changes in style and tone, playwright Dylan Lamb’s language provides a throughline. Lamb’s words are in turn delicious and hilarious; he crafts an astute play with numerous moments of poignancy and hilarity.”

Featuring: Gary David Keast, Roberta Gibbons, Nora Ellen Targonski-O'Brien Jacob Mobley, Marissa Janelle Ward, Brighid Burkhalter, and Joey Hamburger

February 20, 2020, Thursday - Going Dry at Marvel Bar

Time: 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM

Location: Marvel Bar, 50 2nd Ave N

Going Dry

What is our relationship with alcohol in 2020?

It's a funny thing for a bar to ask, or do. Especially ours, one that built a reputation on intentional cocktails, thoughtful liquor selection, and not serving a lick of food (besides Cheetos, that is).

But we thought it was time to talk about how we talk about alcohol, given our role in providing it and often celebrating it. On average, drinking in the United States steadily rises every year, even as another trend takes shape: that of more casual abstainers.

We're gathering some brilliant minds to discuss why this is happening, its effects on our dining and social culture, and what the role of a bar should be in this decade.

When you remove alcohol from the equation, do social interactions get better? How do we respect and welcome people who make different decisions about how they choose to drink or not drink? And will it last?
