Backstage tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at how Guthrie shows are taken from script to stage. In 45 minutes, you'll visit the Guthrie's signature thrust and proscenium stages; enter the expansive scene shop where sets are built and painted, and learn how they're transported to each stage; visit the shop where costumes are expertly stitched, fabrics dyed and wigs constructed; and explore the rehearsal rooms where company members prepare for performance.

Backstage tours are scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. $10 per person; $6 for subscribers, students and seniors. Call the Box Office at 612.377.2224 or order online. The Box Office opens for backstage tours and in-person sales at 9:30 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The town of St. Anthony was established on the east side of the Mississippi in 1848, a few years before its neighbor Minneapolis started on the west side. Despite that head start, Minneapolis annexed St. Anthony in 1872. Stroll through Minneapolis’ oldest neighborhood with a Mill City Museum guide, who will highlight the rich past and exciting future of historic Main Street. The tour will explore life in the village of St. Anthony, changes along Main Street throughout the years, and such landmarks as the 1855 Upton Block, 1858 Martin and Morrison Building, Our Lady of Lourdes Church, the Pillsbury A Mill and the Chalybeate Mineral Springs. This tour will begin and end at Pracna Restaurant, 117 Main Street S.E.

Time: 1pm

Fee: $14 adults, $12 senior citizens, $10 children ages 6-17 and MHS members. Includes museum admission.

ROCK AND READ: Clementown, local mom and pop rock band / multimedia performance project by Kate Lynch and Chris Beaty, opens the season with a show of original rock songs adapted from books, followed by a program of favorite picture books come to life on the big screen.

For kids in preschool (age 3) and up and their families. Children's film curators for the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival will present a pre-show art activity and educational intro for children's film fans before each screening. September 18, 2010, Saturday - White vs. Whole Wheat: A Tale of Two Flours

See how history is revealed in food through a baking demonstration and related family activities on the story behind white and whole wheat flour. Discover how Minneapolis millers perfected a way to make white flour on an industrial scale, hear about the popularity of white flour in the 19th century, what effects this had on nutrition, and why flour today is frequently enriched. Visitors will learn about the pros and cons of each type of flour, sample baked goods made from each, and take home a copy of the recipes. They can also enjoy related activities of grinding wheat into flour and performances by History Player Mary Dodge Woodward, who served as domestic manager of her cousin’s Bonanza Farm in Dakota Territory in the 1880s, cooking and baking for up to 32 threshing crew members.

This event is part of “Greening the Riverfront,” a series of programs exploring our relationship with nature, past, present and future.

Families are invited to Mill City Museum for a series of hands-on adult/child workshops led by educators from the Midwest Food Connection. Participants will discover the importance and delights of eating local foods.

In "Make a Salad", participants will discover the variety of produce that comes from Minnesota’s farms. Families will receive certificates for the Mill City Farmers Market, where they will select fresh produce from the vendors. They will experience through taste, touch and sight their favorite fresh produce, and create a salad together.

Meet the artist behind the giant wind veil artwork at the Twins Stadium. Kahn’s extensive public art portfolio is based on the natural phenomena of wind, fog, light, water, sand, air and fire. He will discuss his unique perspective on public art. Oslund, the award-winning landscape architect and designer of Target Plaza, will tell the incredible back story of The Wave.
