Mississippi River Care: Father Hennepin Bluffs

Join your neighbors and people working nearby as we care for our Mississippi River together. Take a healthy break helping clean up our Mississippi riverfront; learning about the future of the Mississippi and how you can make a difference; and having fun with other people in Marcy-Holmes neighborhood. Good for your community, good for your environment, and good for you!

We will clean up the shoreline, slopes and park on the east bank of the Mississippi River, where Father Hennepin named St. Anthony Falls.

Preparations:
Gloves and tools are provided by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Please bring a water bottle and wear weather-appropriate clothing and close-toed shoes geared for an outdoor activity on natural and uneven surfaces.

September 7, 2019, Saturday - Women's Work Walking Tour at Mill City Museum

Time: 10:30am - Noon

Location:  Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd Street

Women’s Work Walkring Tour

Join a walking tour led by a costumed interpreter portraying labor writer Eva Valesh, who exposed poor working conditions along the Minneapolis riverfront in a series of articles in 1888 and 1889.

Learn about jobs that were available to women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, key events in Minneapolis women's labor history, and the factories that Valesh exposed, including the North Star Woolen Mill, which still stands two blocks from Mill City Museum.

Valesh was a labor writer and orator also known by her pen name Eva Gay. Valesh served as labor editor for the Saint Paul Globe and Minneapolis Tribune as well as an orator for the National Farmers' Alliance. She went on to national acclaim, working as assistant editor of the American Federationist.

This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

The annual Monarch Festival – Festival de la Monarca celebrates the monarch butterfly’s amazing 2,300 mile migration from Minnesota to Mexico. Come and enjoy art, music, dance, games, buying native plants, prairie tours and food, the festival raises awareness of the need to provide and protect monarch habitat.

  • Costume parade 
    The Chicks on Sticks stilt-walking and performance group leads this always-popular march. Children ages 0–12 are encouraged to dress up in monarch-themed costumes. Line-up is at 10:50 am and parade at 11 am.  
  • Monarch migration & monarch-friendly plants
    Get an up-close and personal encounter with these incredible creatures and learn about their 2,300-mile journey between Minnesota and the mountains of Michoacán, Mexico. Find out about and purchase native flora to create a habitat in your yard for butterflies and other pollinators, and discover other simple actions restore their populations. 
  • Performances galore on an all-day stage 
    Performers include In the Heart of the Beast Puppet & Mask Theatre's "The Way of the Monarch" in English and Spanish with American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation; plus music and dance highlighting the Minnesota/Mexico connection: Mariachi Mi Tierra, Ballet Mexico Azteca, Marimba Bullies, the Aztec dance troupe Kalpulli Ketzal Coatlicue (“Precious Mother Earth”), Tropical Zone Orchestra, and Salsa del Soul.
  • Art activities 
    Get creative with Art in the Park with Mia; fold paper flowers with Karine Rupp; make prints with Sarah Nassif and Sol y Luna; paint giant monarch caterpillars with Heart of the Beast; create paper from plants with Paper Plains - or puppets with Lynette LaRue. And much more!

MacPhail Free Family Music Series: Jack Brass Band

The Jack Brass Band was formed in 1999 in the Twin Cities. Based on the traditions of New Orleans’ brass bands, they are the ambassadors to the Crescent City’s rich musical history. The band plays “Feel-Good Music” for audiences of any age, for any occasion. The band has the ability and repertoire to play everything from old New Orleans jazz from Louis Armstrong’s era, to the modern street Mardi-Gras anthems with the instrumentation, feel, and energy they have mastered through countless gigs, parades, festival appearances, and trips to New Orleans to listen, learn, and play alongside the masters. “If you like your gumbo spicy and your music hot, check out the Jack Brass Band,” said Wynton Marsalis after hearing them. Simply put, the Jack Brass Band brings the party to any event with a rich tradition and a groove that will make you want to get up and dance to the New Orleans sound.

MacPhail Free Family Music Series is a FREE musical open house for children 8 and under! At the event, you can enjoy sample music classes for children, instrument exploration, arts and crafts and a live performance by a featured guest – with snacks and refreshments!

Come on out and bike with a ranger this summer! This program is a family-friendly way to explore the Mississippi River led by a park ranger. This ride will begin at The Commons in downtown Minneapolis where stops will be made to talk about the history of the river. Bikes and helmets will not be provided on this program.

Space is limited to 20 people. Please register and plan to arrive 15 minutes early in order to start the event on time. Bring your own bike and helmet or rent one from a nearby bike sharing platform.
