OMNOM is a DJ/Producer from Los Angeles, CA. His delightfully unconventional brand of House, which has been described by some as “a whirlpool of weird,” features his unmistakably peculiar vocals floating over the infectious basslines that have earned him the support of some of House music’s heaviest-hitters including Walker & Royce, FISHER, Kyle Watson, Claude Vonstroke, and Justin Martin. Since entering into the scene in 2017, OMNOM has gone on to release several original tracks and remixes with labels such as This Ain’t Bristol, Box of Cats, and Insomniac Records.

September 20, 2019, Friday - An Anthropocene River: Field Station 1

Time: 6pm – 10 pm

Location: St. Anthony Falls Visitor Center, 1 Portland Ave

An Anthropocene River: Field Station 1

Mississippi: An Anthropocene River is a series of events and activities about the ways in which humans have shaped the region’s environment, with a focus on issues related to the headwaters of the Mississippi River to the Twin Cities.

Field Station 1 considers the stretch of land that extends from the Mississippi River’s headwaters at Lake Itasca, down to the unglaciated region that crosses southeastern Minnesota, southwestern Wisconsin, and northeastern Iowa known as the Driftless. This stretch of the Mississippi River marks both its “natural” and “anthropogenic” origin, where a small creek becomes a continental torrent, where the Dakota, Ojibwe, and many other native peoples centered their material and spiritual lives, and where the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has pursued its mandate to organize, manage, and direct the river’s flow for almost two centuries.

Activities will include:

  • Walking tours and site visits of the Upper Harbor Terminal site (September 20, 1-4pm) and the Ford Dam (September 21, 1-4pm) with the park’s Superintendent John Anfinson (NPS), Roopali Phadke, Morgan Adamson and Bruce Braun

  • Sound installations by Monica Haller, Max Ritts, Michi Wiancko, Judd Greenstein, Sebastian Müllauer, and others

  • Original films about the Mississippi River and the headwaters region by Andrea Carlson, Tia-Simone Gardner, John Kim, Jenny Schmid

  • An Anthropocene workshop with Jen Caruso

  • Discussions with Mike Hoyt and Molly Van Avery about their Illuminate the Lock 2018 art piece

  • Live music with IE (others TBA)

  • And more...

Except where indicated, all events will happen at the St. Anthony Falls Visitor Center (1 Portland Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55401) from 6 PM - 10 PM.

All events are free and open to the public, but there are limited spots available. Please RSVP with Sydney Petersen speterse@macalester.edu if you wish to join.

In the event that a comic has difficulty finishing a bit they have the option of tagging in another comic (two to three comics will be asked to play the role of judges\advice givers) to finish the bit in the time allotted. The person tagged in can not do THEIR own material; they have to finish the other person’s bit in whatever way they think the person might have finished it. $7.

September 17, 2019, Tuesday - Immigrant Stories: Artists Reception at Hennepin Theatre Trust Event Center

Time:  5:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Location: Hennepin Theatre Trust Event Center, 900 Hennepin Avenue

Immigrant Stories: Artists Reception

Join us for an opening reception celebrating “Immigrant Stories,” featuring the work of two Minneapolis artists as part of our year-long focus on art that celebrates the people in our community. This exhibit runs in conjunction with “It’s the People,” a public art project inspired by the people whose experiences and stories create the unique vibrancy of Minneapolis.

While there is stylistic dissonance between their approaches, both display a passion for illuminating our shared humanity and contesting immigration stereotypes.

Joe T Burns presents realistic artwork from “Facing America: An Exhibition of Immigrant Portraits,” in response to negative rhetoric about immigrants. He learns his subjects’ stories and takes about 100 photos before creating portraits. His classical realism celebrates his subjects’ likenesses.

Syed Hosain builds up rich surfaces on canvas, creating a tension between recognition and obliteration. His semi-abstract, reductive interpretations produce highly emotive images that draw out his subjects’ essence.

Time: 11 AM – 1 PM

Location:  Orchestra Hall (Minneapolis), 1111 Nicollet Mall

ILEA MSP: Elevating Events with Sustainable Solutions

Sustainable solutions have eluded the events industry in favor of bounty, excess, ease, and comfort. At your own home, you see the trash generated by a birthday party or a family gathering, but at an event, waste is hidden from the guests. This creates a major disconnect between event attendees and the waste they generate.

Join Chowgirls Killer Catering Owners Heidi Andermack and Amy Lynn Brown for a discussion on how they have being making low-waste events possible since Chowgirls was founded in 2004, and leave feeling energized and confidant that sustainable solutions are possible for your business and events too.

Location: Brian Coyle Community Center, 420 15th Ave. S

Cedar-Riverside Recreation Centers Predesign

Tuesday, September 17 is the second Community Advisory Committee meeting related to recreation in Cedar-Riverside. Bi-monthly meetings on neighborhood recreation centers cover long-term facility options and short-term programming. All are welcome! Children’s activities and a light dinner are provided.

As part of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board's (MPRB) Cedar-Riverside Recreation Centers Predesign project, a community advisory committee (CAC) meets regularly so that committee members, stakeholders and members of the public can share insights and resources related to the project.

Before each CAC meeting, MPRB staff and Pillsbury United Communities meet to discuss short-term recreation programming and answer questions from community members.
.
Upcoming scheduled meeting dates include November 19, 2019; January 21, 2020; March 17, 2020; May 19, 2020 (third Tuesday every other month).
.
About the Cedar-Riverside Recreation Centers Predesign project
The project explores two new recreation centers in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood:
- One would be integrated into a larger development on the east end of the Augsburg University campus.
- The other would renovate/relocate the Brian Coyle Community Center, currently located in Currie Park
- The outcome of the project will be two Predesign reports: one for each center. The reports will be used to apply for State Bond Funds to fund each center independently. This project is not a Design and Construction project. Additional funding will be required to design and construct one or both recreation centers.
