AchieveMpls will mark its 15^th anniversary of providing career and college readiness programs for thousands of Minneapolis students at a celebration dinner on Thursday, October 26. Together with Twin Cities community and business leaders, friends and program alums, we’ll share stories, celebrate the partnerships that make our work possible and look ahead to our next 15 years. The event features a happy hour with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, dinner with wine pour, tributes from our alums and partners, and live auction. Our emcee is T. Mychael Rambo, local Emmy Award winning actor, musician and arts educator. The event is presented by generous long-term partner Best Buy. Get a jump on literacy in interactive pre-school book arts classes with Ellen Ferrari. Children and adults work together to make paper, print patterns, shapes and letters and construct colorful books in a fun environment. Each class begins by reading a story and continues by investigating examples produced by working artists. Vocabulary, tools and processes also will be introduced. These workshops emphasize visual decision-making, improving manual dexterity and a love of books and can be repeated over and over again as projects change each session. Dress for mess.

For families with children ages 3-5. Register for a single class or an entire four-class session at a reduced rate.

Now in its eleventh year, the Haunted Basement is an annual horror experience which marries artist-driven installations with immersive theater performance in an environment which is at turns surreal and psychologically unsettling. 

This year’s run will begin on Friday, September 29 and run through Halloween; with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays of each week, and a final show on Tuesday, October 31 (of course). All shows begin at 6:30 p.m., with performances running later into the night on Fridays, Saturdays and Halloween.

Tickets for the Haunted Basement are $25 for Thursdays and Sundays, and $27 for Fridays, Saturdays, and Halloween. The Haunted Basement is an 18+ with I.D. event.

The 2017 Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association (DMNA) Annual Meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 24, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Open Book in the Performance Hall. 

The feature of this year's meeting will be a Public Forum on 800 Washington Avenue S., also know as the Guthrie Liner Parcel. Previous development proposals for this site have failed to come to fruition. The City intends to redraft and reissue an RFP for 800 Washington Avenue S., at some point in the near future. The DMNA wants to know what your vision is for this unique and highly visible vacant property in Downtown East. Come to the DMNA Annual Meeting to express your thoughts and opinions. Representatives from CPED and Council Member Jacob Frey's office will be at the meeting to hear from you.

Join Chef Sean Sherman, the Ogalala Lakota chef and founder of The Sioux Chef, for a series of cooking demonstrations based on his new book "The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen," an introduction to the modern indigenous cuisine of the Dakota and Minnesota territories. 30-minute demos will take place at 12:30 pm and 2 pm. 

In his cooking, Sherman dispels outdated notions of Native American fare—no fry bread or Indian tacos here—and no European staples such as wheat flour, dairy products, sugar, and domestic pork and beef. The Sioux Chef’s healthful plates embrace venison and rabbit, river and lake trout, duck and quail, wild turkey, blueberries, sage, sumac, timpsula or wild turnip, plums, purslane, and abundant wildflowers.

Chef Sean Sherman was born in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, and has been cooking in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Montana for the past 27 years. He works as a caterer and food educator across the country through his business, The Sioux Chef, based in South Minneapolis. He has earned plaudits and profiles in such venues as National Public Radio, Guardian UK, Saveur, and the New York Times.

Discover the story of the National Historic Landmark Pillsbury A Mill, the largest flour mill in the world for many years, which recently reopened as the A-Mill Artist Lofts. A Mill City Museum guide will lead a tour of the former milling complex, including the rooftop deck and the basement waterpower facilities. Visitors will explore parts of the largest and best-preserved waterpower system in Minneapolis (with views straight down a 50-foot drop shaft); discover how the building functioned during the flour milling era and learn about the new hydroelectric plant that helps to power the complex.

The Pillsbury A Mill was the flagship mill of the Pillsbury Flour Milling Company. The A Mill was not only the largest flour mill in the world when it opened in 1881, it was one of the few architect-designed mills in Minneapolis, designed by Leroy S. Buffington. As such it was an industrial show piece and tourist attraction from the start. The Pillsbury A Mill ceased operation in 2003, and in 2015, the complex was redeveloped as affordable lofts for working artists by Dominium, a Minneapolis-based developer.

Please meet at the gray door on Third Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the A-Mill Artist Loft main entrance at 315 Main Street SE). The tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately-paced walking indoors and outdoors with some uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.
