Burgundy Masterclass: The Wines of the Côte de Beaune
Twin Cities Wine Education presents a special night of amazing Burgundies!
The Burgundy Masterclass: The Wines of the Côte de Beaune
The southern half of the Côte d'Or, known as the Côte de Beaune, is revered for the Chardonnays that are produced there, along with the ethereal reds from Pinot Noir. Legendary regions such as Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Volnay, and Pommard have captured the palates of wine lovers for generations, and in this class, we'll learn why.
We'll start with an overview of Burgundy, including its history and the ideas behind 'terroir.' Then we'll dive into the Côte de Beaune and do a village-by-village analysis of what those regions bring to the glass. Included will be tasting a wide variety of wines, from basic Bourgogne through top-level Premier Cru wines.
Detailed discussion with focus on the comparison of three great white wine villages: Puligny, Chassagne, and Meursault; plus three great red wine villages: Volnay, Pommard, and Chorey-Les-Beaune. Additionally, we'll cover in detail the surrounding villages plus an understanding of the Burgundy ranking systems for wine.
We will taste six great wines over the course of the class to help bring full understanding.

The Loft Presents If: Big Ideas with Madeline Miller—Why is If the Most Important Word?
This season, the Loft will explore the theme If. They believe one of the most powerful storytelling tools is to ask, “What if?” And, so, in their fall Big Ideas event they will put this question to one of the oldest stories of all time: The Odyssey. They’ll ask: what if The Odyssey miscast one of its minor characters? What if Homer’s limited engagement with this subject prevented us from understanding the complex story of a woman exiled? Bringing award-winning author and scholar Madeline Miller, in conversation with Harmony Neal, to the stage to discuss her latest novel Circe, organizers invite you to ask what if we could hear the story this way, instead. $10, members $5.

Improvisation at the Piano: A Global Perspective with Michael Cain
Michael Cain, nationally recognized jazz pianist and new MacPhail faculty member will present a series of two workshops designed to help musicians explore improvisation. These workshops will cover a variety of approaches and techniques for helping pianists integrate improvisation into their own practice and teaching. Drawing on different world music elements along with jazz and blues concepts, topics will include discussion of modes, drone, chords, and ostinatos, as well as rhythmic concepts including counting versus clave. These workshops are open to all pianists regardless of prior experience with improvisation. While this session is geared towards pianists, all musicians are welcome to attend. Participants are encouraged to attend both workshops.
Pianist and composer Michael Cain began gaining international recognition in the mid 1980’s while still a student at the California Insitute of the Arts, performing, touring, and recording with jazz greats James Newton, jazz vocalist Marlena Shaw, the Gerald Wilson Orchestra, and drummer Billy Higgins among others.
