March 6, 2020, Friday - Sueño opens at The Lab (thru March 22)

Times: See event link for show dates/times

Location: The Lab Theater, 700 N 1st Street

Sueño   March 6-22

Pangea World Theater is pleased to present Sueño (Dream), a witty and enchanting contemporary adaptation of a masterwork from the Spanish Golden Age. Sueño is Obie Award-winning playwright José Rivera's translation and adaptation of Pedro Calderón de la Barca's classic Life Is a Dream, on stage at The Lab Theater from March 6-22.
.
The morality play, performed in English, is written in sharp contemporary language but nevertheless explores the eternal questions posed by Calderón: What are humans—angels or animals? What is honor? What is freedom? If life is a dream, who is dreaming us?
Sueño follows the life of young Prince Segismundo, heir to the Spanish throne, who is imprisoned at birth when astrologers predict his reign as king will result in the country's ruin. The brilliant, passionate prince is raised in isolation. His only companions are the nobleman Clotaldo and a god whose very existence he questions. When his father King Basilio finds his own life ending without a legitimate heir, he releases Segismundo and places him on the throne. But what will Segismundo do if all he’s ever known are his prison walls? Will he be able to distinguish between reality and dreams?

Leslie Ishii makes her directorial debut at Pangea with Sueño and brings together a notable cast featuring Fernando Collado as Segismundo; Pedro R. Bayón as Basillio, King of Spain, Ankita Ashrit (Rosaura), Ernest Briggs (Clotaldo), Katia Cardenas (Estrella), Adlyn Carreras (Clarín), Keila Anali Saucedo (Chorus/Ensemble), Amarkirat Singh (1st Soldier) and Nicolas Sullivan (Astolfo). Her creative team includes Eric Gonzalez (sound), Mike Grogan (lighting), Mary Anne Kelling (costumes), Sir Curtis Kirby III (assistant director) and Joel Sass (set).
.
Tickets to Sueño are $18 in advance and $22 at the door. Discounts are available for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased online at bit.ly/sueno2020 or by phone at 612-333-7977.

Time: 7 PM – 8:30 PM

Location: East Side Neighborhood Services, 1700 2nd St NE

Connecting Birds & People Through Bird-Friendly Coffee

Hosted by Audubon Chapter of Minneapolis

Can you help conserve birds and nature just by having a cup of coffee? Yes, if it’s the right kind of coffee!

Long-distance migratory birds spend only a few months of their annual cycle on the breeding grounds. During the remainder of the year, they fly often thousands of miles to and from the tropical habitats where they spend most of their lives. Innovative advances in tracking technology and wintering ecology make it very clear that the health of "our birds" is inextricably linked to how well they are nourished during the non-breeding season. As a commodity produced in the tropics and imported to North America, coffee also has a migratory path.

Join us for an evening exploration of the story of bird-friendly coffee with our guest speaker, Tom Will. Tom works as a Non-game Bird Biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Midwest Regional Migratory Birds staff in Bloomington, MN. He has been an active participant in regional, continental, and international Partners in Flight activities and a long-time contributor to Partners in Flight science publications. He has lived and worked as an ornithologist and conservation ecologist in the Galapagos, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Mexico before settling 20 years ago in Saint Paul.
