Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building.

A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time.

This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

• The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
• "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
• The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
• The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
• Millstone plaza originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
• Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928, and 1991
• The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodelled into two classrooms while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Get hooked on Lucy Cousins’ Hurray for Fish! and then get hooked on gyotaku – Japanese fish printing! Use newsprint, color tissue papers, paint, brushes and a wide variety of rubbery fish–from small drum to large walleye. Have a chance to try gyotaku with rice paper and a real fish, too! Join us on Saturday mornings for family book arts fun. Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity and then dives into book arts projects. Workshops accommodate a range of developmental levels so that adults and children can work together or side-by-side.

Each participant receives supplies to use during the workshop, but may choose to bring one set home if working with a partner. Older children will receive suggestions for extending their learning. Adult/child pair: $32 (10% discount for MCBA members) + $5 supply fee; additional participants (adult or child): $16 (10% discount for MCBA members) + $2.50 supply fee.

Jennifer Glaws' Jagged Moves presents Touch Code

Dance • Music • Sculpture • Performance

Jennifer Glaws brings her viscerally honest choreographic voice and rich investigations in ENERGY and SPACE to the Southern Theater’s stage for a one-of-a-kind performance by Jagged Moves. The full evening, all female sextet, explores the central themes of boundaries and reclamation as flutist, Julie Johnson, performs a live, original score of her experimental and contemplative music. The dancers traverse the soundscape and mysterious, sculptural environment investigating the spaces between “us” and the relentless proclamation of the female voice.

Crafted collaboratively between Glaws and the performers, the choreography amplifies the energy, chemistry, and responsiveness to the interruption of personal space by exhibiting a raw and exposed view to the tensions, control, and power—or lack of power—in proximity.
