St. Patrick's Day Cookie Decorating Workshop

Learn the art of royal icing with cookie decorator, Cori Robinson, the artist behind The Cookie Creative. In our beginner to intermediate royal icing skills class, we'll share our expert tips for creating beautiful custom cookies, from baking to decorating using only plant-based ingredients. You'll leave the class with all the skills and knowledge you need to start making your own sugar art at home.

In this 2.5 hour class, you'll learn to:

1. Bake the perfect sugar cookie
We'll share with you how to roll and bake the perfect blank canvases for your sugar art creations. Learn how to achieve uniformity in thickness and consistency and cookies that not only hold their shape through the baking process, but taste great too!

2. Work confidently with royal icing
Mixing the perfect royal icing can be easy if you know what to look for. We'll share our best recipes, tips, tricks, and show you how to achieve the perfect consistency icing for piping, flooding, brush work and creating beautiful mulitdimensional designs.

3. Color-mixing and matching techniques
If you've seen our cookies, you know we're sticklers for achieving beautiful design with the truest most brilliant colors. Whether you want to match a palette you found on Pinterest or the exact colors in a wedding invitiation, we'll show you how to expertly match any pantone color out there using just edible dyes.

4. Create a custom holiday themed cookie set
We'll take you through our cookie design process step-by-step so you can leave with your own hand-decorated cookie set.* Learn to create our signature designs. All supplies included.

Celebrate the luck of the Irish responsibly and get a free ride on Metro Transit on Saturday, March 16 – one day prior to St. Patrick’s Day – in conjunction with the Minneapolis and St. Paul parades.

Customers can ride free from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. on all Metro Transit routes on the day before St. Patrick’s Day– buses, METRO lines and Northstar. Simply hop on and take a seat for free. 

If you’re celebrating that night – or want to avoid driving alongside those who are – riding the bus or train is a worry-free and safe alternative.

Watch for Metro Transit in the St. Patrick’s Day parades in downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul on Saturday, March 16; not Sunday.

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building.

A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time.

This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

• The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
• "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
• The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
• The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
• Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
• Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928, and 1991
• The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

The Minneapolis St. Patrick's Day Association, or MSPDA, was founded in 1969 by Sean and Judith Clerkin. With their active participation in the community and desire to celebrate Minnesota's Irish-American heritage, the Clerkins decided to begin a tradition of supporting the diabetic community by donating to the American Diabetes Association, raising money through St. Patrick's Day parade events and contests.

Besides donating 100% of proceedings to the American Diabetes Association, MSPDA raises money for Camp Needlepoint, a summer camp for children living with diabetes. Members of the MSPDA community, from Ms. Blarney to friends of the association, sell buttons and paper shamrocks to raise funds for the children at camp.

Promotion of MSPDA is done through various parade events and contests. These include:

• The Blarney Princess contest
• The Wee Leprechauns contest
• Nomination of the Kilt Bohys
• Honoring Irish-American community members
• Paper Shamrocks with friends of MSPDA
• Selling of MSPDA Buttons

Pangea World Theater’s take on Brecht’s classic, Mother Courage, is a scathing critique of profiteering through war and misfortune. As relevant today as when it was written, Mother Courage follows a woman determined to make her living from war at any cost. Over the course of the play, she loses all three of her children to the very war from which she tried to profit.

Our production of Mother Courage features a diverse ensemble, and presents a fresh perspective on this traditionally Euro-centric piece. Exposing the oft unrecognized impacts of war on women, LGBTQ2A+, and indigenous, black and brown bodies, we uplift these voices, and empower artists to connect to their own truth in this historical text.

Come challenge your perceptions of homelessness and share in a community-building experience. zAmya Theater, in collaboration with Hennepin Theatre Trust and The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center, created Stories from the Book of Harbor Light. It is based on storytelling, writing and acting workshops with people staying at the Harbor Light Center and others who have experienced homelessness or are currently homeless.

The workshops and play were inspired by a mural commissioned by the Trust for the Harbor Light Center. Artist Bianca Pettis used the mural to amplify the voices of Harbor Light residents by having conversations with them to inspire her artwork and create a sense of community and belonging. Now, you can see those stories come to life in an original theatre piece at 900 Hennepin.

“A big theme that has stood out for me is homeless people tend to feel alone,” says Stories from the Book of Harbor Light playwright Caroline Mannheimer. “They almost all crave community, fellowship. Sometimes all a person needs is for another to listen to their story.”

See Stories from the Book of Harbor Light March 15 at 6 p.m. at 900 Hennepin Ave. with a reception at 5:30 p.m. A donation of $20 is recommended. Our goal is to bring together a socially diverse audience. Proceeds will benefit The Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay.

Stories from the Book of Harbor Light is supported by the Carolyn Foundation and a grant to Harbor Light from the Minnesota State Arts Board’s Partners in Arts Participation.

March 15, 2019, Friday - St. Patrick's Revelry at FINNEGANS (3 days)

There’s something extra meaningful about this year’s St. Patrick's festivities at FINNEGANS. The 19-year-old beer company – known for donating 100% of profits to charities fighting hunger since day one – is celebrating the first anniversary of opening their own brewery and taproom.

The downtown Minneapolis space in Elliot Park will host a weekend long celebration from 3/15 – 3/17 complete with live music, Irish fare, and a special appearance from The Current’s Oake & Riley on Sunday. The morning show duo even put together a flight of their favorite FINNEGANS beers, dubbed The Oake & Riley Flight, which will be available for customers to order in the taproom the entire month of March (excluding 3/17, when flights are unavailable).

To make things even more special, FINNEGANS is releasing a trio of new beers as tribute to their fierce founder, their skilled head brewer and their brewery’s first anniversary:

Jacqued Up Double IPA (ABV 8.7%) – Released Friday 3/15

Named after FINNEGANS founder Jacquie Berglund, this double IPA is packed with 7.2 pounds of hops per barrel, making it the most heavily hopped beer FINNEGANS has ever released. With notes of peach, mango and tropical fruit, its flavor is as fun and bold as its namesake.

George Lager (ABV 6%) – Released Saturday 3/16

Helles Pale Lager aged in Minnesota white oak barrels and named for head brewer, Ryan’s late father. This lager is an homage to when Ryan’s father home-brewed, as he always made lagers and pilsners. It’s crisp, light bodied and has notes of lemon, orange, oak and a slight hint of caramel and smoke from the barrels. They’re also making a version brewed with blueberries! 

Firsties Imperial Irish Ale (ABV 7.5%) – Released Sunday 3/17

The official first anniversary celebration beer. It's the famous FINNEGANS Irish Ale, only amplified. Still smooth and refreshing, but with even more malt and caramel character and a jump in ABV.

This season the Loft is exploring the theme “Needs.” When talking about basic needs such as food, water and shelter, “need” is synonymous with necessity. When talking about meaningful connections and relationships, “need” becomes a murkier word, doubly so when talking about family. There are many ways to create, engage with and participate in a family, but what do we need from our family? In conversation with Lisa Marie Brimmer about his latest novel, That Kind of Mother, Rumaan Alam looks at family through a female protagonist with a biological white son and an adoptive black son and asks how family can meet one’s needs. $15 ($10 members). 

March 13, 2019, Wednesday - Ask the Brain Injury Experts at Hennepin Healthcare Clinic & Specialty Center

Unlike a wrist or ankle fracture where a cast, splint or minor surgery can help return function back to “normal,” an injury to the brain can present unique challenges. No two brain injuries are alike; recovery and treatment recommendations are based on the severity of the injury and other factors – and can have life-changing effects.

Hennepin Healthcare’s Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Center cares for more than 3,000 patients each year, providing a full range of state-of-the-art medical and rehabilitative services from prevention to emergency care, neurosurgery, critical care, rehabilitation and the Traumatic Brain Injury Outpatient Program.

Experts from many of those services will be available to answer questions in person at the “Ask the Brain Injury Experts” event on Wednesday, March 13 from noon-1pm at the M. Stillman Education and Community Center located on the first floor of the Hennepin Healthcare Clinic & Specialty Center, 715 S 8th Street, M. Stillman Education and Community Center (parking is available beneath the building). A live Twitter chat will also take place during that time so anyone who cannot attend in person can ask questions using the hashtags #TBIMonth and #TBIChat to @hennepinhc.

Throughout the month of March the TBI Center is sponsoring educational events for the public to raise awareness about traumatic brain injury. Although they are free, some of these events require registration. For more information go to www.hennepinhealthcare.org/tbimonth 

Each year, more than 2.5 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Among children and young adults, TBI is the leading cause of death and disability. In Minnesota, nearly 100,000 brain injuries occur annually. A large percentage of those injuries are mild to moderate cases and often go untreated. As a Level I Trauma Center, Hennepin Healthcare admits and treats the most traumatic brain injuries in the state.
