ULTIMATE INTRO TO WINE: THE WINES OF EUROPE
When you first start to learn about wine, it is easier to learn about California, Australian, and South American wines for several reasons. First, these places (especially the west coast of America) are familiar to us and we know how to pronounce the locations. Secondly, the grape variety is often presented on the label, simplifying the understanding of what’s in the bottle. And lastly, they are the majority of wines available in most wine shops in the United States.

Then something strange and wonderful happens… maybe it’s a bottle of Puligny-Montrachet from France, or a Soave Classico from Italy, or a Priorat from Spain.

Whatever it may be, you find yourself intrigued by the wonderful taste and aromas, which are so different from American wines. You wonder just what it is that you are enjoying. Picking up the bottle, you look hard to discover what grape you are drinking, to no avail. Why is European wine so concerned about the place with barely a mention of what grapes are involved? These labels are confusing to many, so where do you possibly start when learning about European wine?

You start with the our “European Wine 101” class, that’s where! In this info-packed class we cover many topics including but not limited to:

• A brief history of winemaking in Italy, Spain, and France

• The cultural and style differences between European wines and American wines

• The geography and topography of Europe’s wine regions

• An overview of the French concept of “Terroir”

• Details on reading and understanding Italian, French, and Spanish wine labels

• A discussion on finding the biggest bang for the buck in European wine

and more! We’ll taste through a range of great examples and use the wines we are tasting to grow your understanding of the ‘old world’ of wine.

Marcy Path to Peace / Terry Labyrinth Ceremony

Everyone is invited to a ceremony celebrating the Terry Labyrinth, it's legacy and recognizing the sacred peace project with students, public and community member stakeholders before construction of the new addition to Marcy Open School begins. In the coming weeks, work crews will disassemble, inventory and store the Labyrinth, path to peace and rain garden elements. These elements will be reassembled once construction on the school is complete.

Although there is a fence around the site due to thawing blankets guests will go out the side door from inside the school to access the site.

Spend a day with history colleagues who work in classrooms or museums, libraries, exhibits, online, theater, visual arts, radio, TV, film, and more. Participants will have the chance to think and talk together, solve problems, imagine new opportunities, and increase history-making and storytelling skills.

An opening conversation about the relationship between history and art entitled “Staging History” will be held at Mixed Blood Theatre on Sunday, March 24, 4:30-7 p.m.  Tickets sold separately.

March 25, 2018, Monday - DMNA Board Meeting at Mill City Museum

The next Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association (DMNA) Board meeting will take place on Monday, MARCH 25 at 5:45 p.m., at the Mill City Museum.  

A Community Vote, open to the general membership, will take place prior to the DMNA Board of Directors meeting. The purpose of the vote is to approve an NRP Phase II Plan Modification to move $60,000 from the Housing Opportunities Fund strategy to the Support to End Homelessness strategy. The reason for moving the dollars is to support a contribution to St. Stephen’s Human Services for their Street Outreach Program. Anyone who lives, works or owns property in the Downtown East or Downtown West neighborhoods is encouraged to attend, review and vote. The DMNA Board will take action reflecting the vote of the general membership immediately after the community vote. City processes requires a 21-day notification to the neighborhood regarding the Community Vote.

Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Discover the story of the National Historic Landmark Pillsbury A Mill, the largest flour mill in the world for many years, which recently reopened as the A-Mill Artist Lofts. A Mill City Museum guide will lead a tour of the former milling complex, including the rooftop deck (weather permitting) and the basement waterpower facilities.

Highlights include the largest and best-preserved waterpower system in Minneapolis, with views straight down a 50-foot drop shaft through a glass floor. Guests will discover how the building functioned during the flour milling era; see the architectural highlights of the recently completed A-Mill Artist Lofts built within the historic mill buildings; and learn about the new hydroelectric plant that helps to power the complex.

This tour is presented in partnership with A-Mill Artist Lofts and includes about 1.5 miles of moderately-paced walking indoors and outdoors with some uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Tours begin at the gray door on 3rd Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the main entrance at 315 Main Street SE).

Celebrate Women's History Month with a day devoted to the women of Mill City.

Enjoy performances by Mill City Museum History Players portraying 19th and 20th-century women who contributed to Minnesota history and Minneapolis' flour milling, like the female flour packers known as "mill girls" who began working at the Washburn A Mill in 1902. By 1919 dozens of women worked as packers on the 5th floor of the Utility Building, which became known as "No Man's Land."

Plus, guests can explore the exhibits, dress up and have their picture taken as a 1950s mill worker, and make a paper hat like women flour packers wore in 1919.

March 23, 2019, Saturday - "Demolition Dreaming" DVD Release at Eat My Words Books

Demolition Dreaming

From the mind of Jim Akre comes a new film entitled Demolition Dreaming.

The Gateway District was a Minneapolis neighborhood near downtown that was completely demolished in the late 1950's and early 1960's as part of the city's urban renewal program. That lost part of the city inspired local animator John Akre to create "Demolition Dreaming," an animated feature film with a score by Dreamland Faces and narration by Jill Underwood. Akre will present images and videos about the Gateway District and his film at "Eat My Words!" bookshop on Saturday, March 23 at 7 pm. DVDs of the film will be for sale at the event.

"Demolition Dreaming," begins and ends at the site of the Quarry Shopping Center in Northeast Minneapolis. The movie is a fantasy of the Minneapolis Gateway District, a part of the city that was removed without trace. The movie tells the story of a sign-painter and his family. They run a residence hotel, in which live some other characters of the Gateway.

March 23, 2019, Saturday - Welcome Back the Herons at Marshall Terrace Park

The Mississippi Park Connection invites you to join them in welcoming back the herons on Saturday, March 23, at Marshall Terrace Park, 2740 Marshall Street NE.

NOTE: The time of this event will be announced closer to the date. Attendees will meet Ranger Sharon at the park down on the river bank.

Great blue herons start returning to their rookery on the Mississippi River toward the end of March. Join Park Ranger Sharon (aka Birdchick) at Marshall Terrace Park in Minneapolis to watch them rebuild nests and do a little flirting. With any luck, you may also see the resident peregrine falcons fly over, as well as migrating ducks such as the buffleheads and goldeneye.

This event takes place on the banks of the Mississippi River (weather permitting), so attendees should be prepared for mud or ice. It is free and open to everyone. Binoculars and cameras are encouraged. Ranger Sharon will have her spotting scope to aid viewing the birds.
