January 27, 2020, Monday - Relief for Australia Benefit at Pog Mahone's

Time: 4 PM – 12 AM

Location: Pog Mahone's Minneapolis, 903 S Washington Ave

Relief for Australia Benefit

This past September, a series of deadly wildfires broke out in Australia that have killed millions of animals, displaced thousands of people, and destroyed millions of acres of land (not to mention turning the air itself toxic). Firefighters are overwhelmed in their attempt to control the blaze, but the fires continue to spread, destroying everything in their path.

We want to help in any way that we can, so the staff at Pog Mahone’s has pledged to donate every cent of tips made Monday night to organizations aiding in relief, as well as all proceeds from our silent auction. These organizations include:

CFS Foundation, which provides financial assistance to volunteer fire fighters and their families while in the line of service - https://cfsfoundation.org.au

Australian Red Cross, which provides temporary housing, medical assistance, transportation, and more to people affected by the fires - https://www.redcross.org.au

Adelaide Koala Rescue (AKR), which provides a free, volunteer-based rescue service, as well as rehabilitation for injured, orphaned, or displaced koalas - https://www.akr.org.au/

WIRES (NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue, and Education Service), Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organization, which helps care for and rehabilitate all animals affected by the fires, as well as educating the public on how they can help and/or how to care for these animals. https://www.wires.org.au/

Please join us to help make a positive impact during such a terrifying time.

And to our friends in the service industry, bring a clock out slip for 2-4-1s!

*The event goes until midnight, but if people want to give a little later, I'll keep the doors open until 2!

Location: Mill City Museum704 South 2nd Street

Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building.

A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time.

This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

  • The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
  • "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
  • The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
  • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone plaza originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928, and 1991
  • The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodelled into two classrooms while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Grey Rock

The Guthrie Theater presents
a Remote Theater Project production of
GREY ROCK
written and directed by Amir Nizar Zuabi
January 23 - 26, 2020

Set in present day and reflecting on the first moon landing in 1969, Grey Rock tells the story of an ordinary man in a small West Bank village determined to go to the moon. The play addresses the chaos that ensues within his family as he builds a space rocket in his shed. Through Grey Rock, Zuabi creates a humorous, fantastical exploration of the inalienable right to dream and how American culture has permeated and influenced Palestinian culture. The piece will be performed in English by a five-member cast from across Palestine, including internationally known actor Khalifa Natour.

Remote Theater Project is a new initiative by producer Alexandra Aron designed to bring theater artists who are isolated either geographically or politically to New York City to develop new work, tour internationally and have their voices heard outside the confines of their regions.
