About Gloria Steinem
Gloria Steinem is a writer, political activist, and feminist organizer. She was a founder of New York and Ms. magazines, and is the author of My Life on the RoadMoving Beyond WordsRevolution from Within, and Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions, all published in the United States, and in India, As If Women Matter. She co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Ms. Foundation for Women, the Free to Be Foundation, and the Women’s Media Center in the United States. As links to other countries, she helped found Equality Now, Donor Direct Action, and Direct Impact Africa. For her writing, Steinem has received the Penney-Missouri Journalism Award, the Front Page and Clarion awards, the National Magazine Award, the Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Society of Writers Award from the United Nations, and the University of Missouri School of Journalism Award for Distinguished Service in Journalism. In 1993, her concern with child abuse led her to co-produce an Emmy Award–winning TV documentary for HBO, Multiple Personalities: The Search for Deadly Memories. She and Amy Richards co-produced a series of eight documentaries on violence against women around the world for VICELAND in 2016. In 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. In 2019, she received the Freedom Award from the National Civil Rights Museum.

Kerri Miller is host of MPR News with Kerri Miller and Talking Volumes. She was the political reporter for KARE 11 television in Minneapolis-St. Paul before coming to MPR in 2004. 
She has won numerous awards, including the Society of Professional Journalists National Achievement Award, Minnesota Broadcasters Award, the Associated Press Award and a Gracie award from the Alliance for Women in Media.

About the Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series 
For 36 years, the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, with support from Carlson and the Carlson Family Foundation, has presented the Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series, bringing to Minnesota world-renowned speakers to participate in a forum dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the most important policy issues of the day. The series began in 1980 with a gift from Curtis L. Carlson to honor his late friend, Hubert H. Humphrey, and to “contribute to the intellectual life of the greater Twin Cities community by sponsoring lively forums of broad interest.”

The Avant Garde Presents a Performance About the History and Impact of Black Music

Presented by The Avant Garde, Expressions of Black Progress: Homage To The Groove is a three-act concert and illustrated narrative, which focuses on the history of Black music and how it has always been a prominent component in uplifting and empowering American culture. It also is a reminder to uphold the elders who laid the foundation and to carry on tradition.

The performance features Ginger Commodore, Johnny Brown, and Kathleen Johnson with the band led by Ryan Bynum. The performance is hosted and directed by Chadwick Niles Phillips.

The show is appropriate for all ages and presented without intermission. Doors open at 6 pm; show begins at 6:30 pm. 

Please note that the museum gallery is not open on the night of the performance.

Oyster Shucking Classes are back! Pillbury A Mill Tour

The Pillsbury A Mill, constructed in 1881, was once the largest and most advanced flour mill in the world. Go on a guided tour of the former milling complex, including the rooftop deck and the basement waterpower facilities, and discover the story of this National Historic Landmark, now home to the A-Mill Artist Lofts.

Highlights include the largest and best-preserved waterpower system in Minneapolis, with views straight down a 50-foot drop shaft through a glass floor. Guests will discover how the building functioned during the flour milling era, see the architectural highlights of the recently completed A-Mill Artist Lofts built within the historic mill buildings, and learn about the new hydroelectric plant that helps power the complex.

This tour is presented in partnership with A-Mill Artist Lofts.

The tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking indoors and outdoors with some uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Audition to be a cast member on the CBS hit show Love Island USA and go on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to find love!

Join WCCO-TV at Surly Brewing Company on Saturday, February 15th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for the chance to become a contestant on LOVE ISLAND.

Be sure to arrive early! At 12:30 p.m. there will be a Q&A with LOVE ISLAND Narrator, Matthew Hoffman, and season one Islanders. The first 600 contestants will receive an official LOVE ISLAND water bottle.
