Emily Blacik Joos and Aaron Rice Present Unusual Enough

August 9 - 10

Seeking to create a performance experience in which live music is not just an accompaniment to dance, but an equal partner, choreographer Emily Blacik Joos and musician Aaron Rice first collaborated in late 2018 to develop Confluence -- a thirty-minute piece which fuses modern/contemporary dance with the live performance of Rice’s music. Unusual Enough, an expansion of that project, will include a re staging of Confluence as well as two all new dance/live music pieces in which Rice will share the stage with the dancers. Unusual Enough explores themes of isolation, the desire for human connection and the joy of shared experiences.

Time: 10:30am - Noon

Location: Tours begin at the gray door on 3rd Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the main entrance at 315 Main Street SE).

Hennepin Island Hydropower Tour

Future date: August 22

Along the way, learn about the historic uses of waterpower at the falls for flour milling, sawmilling, and hydroelectricity, the role of hydroelectricity in Xcel Energy's green energy and energy efficiency initiatives, and the future of waterpower on the Minneapolis riverfront.

This tour is presented in partnership with Xcel Energy and is for ages 10 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces, as well as climbing up and down several flights of stairs. Some historic locations on this tour are not wheelchair-accessible.

August 8, 2019, Thursday - The Builders: Shaping Minnesota's Architectural Landscape on the Color Line Exhibit Opening at Mill City Museum

The Builders: Shaping Minnesota's Architectural Landscape on the Color Line Exhibit Opening

On exhibit: August 8 – October 27

Opening program: Thursday, August 8, 6pm (remarks at 7 pm)

Enjoy the new exhibit The Builders: Shaping Minnesota's Architectural Landscape on the Color Lineby the African American Interpretive Center of Minnesota. This exhibit showcases the social history of three black Minnesotans who impacted the architecture and design of Minneapolis and St. Paul: Clarence "Cap" W. Wigington, Casiville Bullard and William Hazel.

The exhibit features maps and blueprints that will encourage visitors to appreciate familiar Twin Cities buildings in a new way. Cap Wigington's designs for the Winter Carnival Ice Castles and the Highland Park Water Tower made him a force in Minnesota architectural circles. His contemporary, Casiville Bullard, left Tennessee for Minnesota in the late 1890s to complete stonework on the State Capitol. As a stoneworker, Bullard contributed his skill to a variety of structures in the state including Pilgrim Baptist Church, the St. Paul Cathedral and the Foshay Tower. William Hazel was a known architect and sought-after stained-glass artist, and his move to Minnesota grabbed the attention of local Minnesotans when The Appealnewspaper announced his arrival.

The exhibit also will create a snapshot of the racial climate in which the builders performed their craft and illustrate what career development looked like for black people in Minnesota in the 19th- and 20th-centuries.

The exhibit is located in the museum's central Mill Commons and is free and open to the public during regular museum hours, through October 27, Free.
