Hungry for an off the beaten path Minneapolis food experience? Join us as we explore one of the city's trendy and historical neighborhoods, the Mill District and St. Anthony on Main in Northeast Minneapolis. You'll enjoy sampling food at the first Thai restaurant in Minnesota, home-made gelato, and drinking Minnesota-brewed craft beer along the oldest street in Minneapolis. You'll also enjoy mouth-watering pasta located in the historical Chase building, a fried food that is universally loved in Minnesota, and an amazing dessert created by a pastry chef nominated for the James Beard award.

In addition to sampling food, we will also stroll through the local Farmers Market, Mill City Museum and Guthrie Theater. You'll enjoy gorgeous views of St. Anthony Falls as we walk along the Stone Arch Bridge into historical St. Anthony on Main. You'll learn about the history of both of these neighborhoods while touring the oldest street in Minneapolis. ARENA DANCES is a contemporary dance company performing the abstract work of Mathew Janczewski, which gives shape to emotions, exploring the depths and the limits of what drives us as humans to connect, to break away, to survive. Since 1995, ARENA DANCES has aimed to make dance accessible to all through the presentation of contemporary dance, educational outreach, and community gatherings that inspire and promote dialogue and diversity.

Minneapolis-based DJ and event producer DJ Rowsheen has toured and performed with international artists such as P.O.S and Peaches. A founding member and curator of HOOPS, a DJ duo with Babyghost, Rowsheen has also been featured at Minneapolis Open Streets, Zombie Pub Crawl, X-Games 2017 & 2018, Soundset, and Eaux Claires.

Women's Woodshop empowers women and non-binary makers through the art of woodcraft. Woodworking is a creative and practical skill that can build confidence and strengthen the imagination. They foster community by introducing women and non-binary folks to tools and techniques through their classes as well as providing equipment and workspace.

Jessica Lopez Lyman, PhD, is an interdisciplinary performance artist and Xicana feminist scholar. She researches Midwestern Chicana/ox and Latina/o/x experiences, social movements, and arts engagement. Lyman is an assistant professor in the Department of Chicano and Latino Studies at the University of Minnesota. La Luchadora is an interactive, mobile, screen print cart designed to produce and circulate social justice art to the broader public. The evening’s prints focus on the water protector’s movement, Indigenous resistance, and Latina/o/x solidarities in Minnesota.

Programming for Terrace Thursdays 2019 was designed in collaboration with a committee of local artists, activists, and community organizers. Thanks to Scott Artley, Machen Davis, Anthonia Eboreime, Nicky Leingang, Yoni Light, Oskar Ly, Meena Mangalvedhekar, Wintana Melekin, and Taja Will.

August 22, 2019, Thursday - Shimmer Finale : Improv Dance Series at Gamut Gallery

Shimmer Finale : Improv Dance Series

Members of the Twin Cities dance community, including dancers from local contemporary company TU Dance, perform two 20-minute Improv Dance sessions through the evening, followed by Q and A.

Artistic ambitions collide as movement brings objects to life in this existential exploration of light, color and reflection. The juxtaposition of Foster’s kaleidoscopic geometry matched with the immediate proximity of improvisational dance will make for an experience that bridges two different corners of the local artistic landscape – providing two different interpretations of the same world.

“I think the combination of John’s work and the response we have planned will make for an interesting display that adds yet another dimension to his artwork,” says Amanda Sachs, one of the participating TU Dance members. “Just like some of the pieces in Shimmer, improv can embody varying textures and can represent meaning that is both direct and abstract. Your perspective defines what’s a contradiction or a similarity, and an interpretation is often dependent on what it’s in relation to.”

This freeform performance experience aims at redefining the traditional audience-performer relationship while examining the concepts of perspective and reflection. Tickets and more information can be found at gamutgallerymps.com.

ABOUT THE DANCERS
The improvisational response to John Foster’s work will involve dancers Jake Lewis, Samantha Lewis, Emma Marlar, Alex Pham, Amanda Sachs and Christian Warner, many of whom are involved with Bon Iver’s Come Through collaboration, among many other dance projects both locally and internationally.

When identities collide, some rise to power, and others become prey; but when a real Con is playing the game, it’s only a matter of time before they all fall down, one by one.

August 22, 2019, Thursday - Hennepin Island Hydropower Tour with the Mill City Museum

Time: 10:30am - Noon

Location: Tours begin at the gray door on 3rd Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the main entrance at 315 Main Street SE).

Hennepin Island Hydropower Tour

Explore the history of waterpower at St. Anthony Falls, including special access to view the exterior of an operating Xcel Energy hydroelectric plant. During the early 20th century, more than two dozen mills and hydroelectric plants used the waterpower from St. Anthony Falls; today just one is left: Xcel's Hennepin Island Hydroelectric Plant.

On this tour, a Mill City Museum guide will lead participants to Hennepin Island and Father Hennepin Bluffs Park, including special access to the grounds of the power plant. Along the way, learn about the historic uses of waterpower at the falls for flour milling, sawmilling, and hydroelectricity, the role of hydroelectricity in Xcel Energy's green energy and energy efficiency initiatives, and the future of waterpower on the Minneapolis riverfront.

This tour is presented in partnership with Xcel Energy and is for ages 10 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces, as well as climbing up and down several flights of stairs. Some historic locations on this tour are not wheelchair-accessible.

Mill City Live returns for its 16th season with live music on Wednesday evenings in August.
