Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years and the many changes to the building over time. This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

The Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival returns April 13-29, with more than 350 bold, exciting, and moving works from new and veteran filmmakers from around the globe.

This year's festival will feature new virtual reality, narrative, documentary and experimental feature length and short films from 70+ countries, more than 80 films made in Minnesota, and a series of films for youth and young audiences. Legendary British director Peter Brook and his longtime collaborators Marie-Hélène Estienne and Jean Claude Carrière are no strangers to epic storytelling: in 1985 they conceived, wrote and directed the Mahabharata, a nine-hour production that was lauded as one of the greatest theatrical achievements of all time. Thirty years later the collaborators have returned to the Indian epic to create this 70-minute landmark production, a revised and extended excerpt from the ancient Sanskrit poem. 

Battlefield uses four actors and a musician to evoke the apocalyptic aftermath of a war between rival members of the same family, while exploring the immeasurable costs of victory. Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to experience Brook’s masterpiece on the Guthrie stage.

April Sip of Science - A Tale of Two (Contradictory?) Poles: Sea Ice and Climate Change

One of the more visual lines of evidence for climate change is observing sea ice growth and melting trends at the poles. Indeed, relatively consistent warmth, punctuated by winter heat waves, has stymied Arctic sea ice growth this winter, leading to another record low in a series of record lows. However, from 2012-2014, pan-Antarctic seas ice seasonal maximums reached successively record high extents. These maxima mask substantial seasonal and regional variability, but such events generated news headlines contrasting Arctic sea ice loss with Antarctic sea ice gain. Such seemingly contradictory information about climate change provides a case study where we can investigate what the public perceives about sea ice and climate change. Join us!

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Katy Barnhart received her B.S.E in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Princeton University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She did a postdoctoral fellowship at the Anneberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania and is now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Colorado. While primarily a geologist interested in how landscapes evolve over a variety of timescales, she is also interested in the intersection between scientists, the public, the media, and policy makers.

A SIP OF SCIENCE bridges the gap between science and culture in a setting that bridges the gap between brain and belly. Food, beer, and learning are on the menu in a happy hour forum in which researchers pair with musicians, artists and storytellers to put science in context through storytelling. Grace and Frankie among others. An award-winning travel writer and an editor-at-large at National Geographic Traveler, his travel memoir, The Longest Way Home, was a New York Times. His debut novel, Just Fly Away, tells the story of one girl's discovery of family secrets, first love, and finding one's way in the world.

Territoriality, Sovereignty and Water: Indian Rights and Law Panel Discussion

A panel of Indigenous scholars and practitioners will discuss water and land rights issues, using Indian law and contemporary issues such as Standing Rock and other environmental contestations as a window into broader, long-standing colonial dynamics. They will address such questions as: How do American Indian sovereignty and tribal law intersect with federal law? How are historic preservation laws and mechanisms for protecting cultural sites implemented at the federal, state and tribal levels? What are the roles and responsibilities of citizens?

The panel will include: Dr. David E. Wilkins (McKnight Presidential Professor in American Indian Studies at University of Minnesota), Dr. Joe Watkins (anthropologist/archeologist, ACE Consultants, former director of the Native American studies program at University of Oklahoma), Tamara St. John (archivist for the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Archives, works with the Tribal Historic Preservation Office on cultural preservation) and Moderator: Joe D. Horse Capture (director of American Indian Initiatives, Minnesota Historical Society).

April 8, 2017, Saturday - MacPhail Spotlight Series Presents: From the Balkans to the Holy Land

MacPhail Spotlight Series: From the Balkans to the Holy Land is an eclectic show that showcases the virtuosity of Paul Schoenfeld’s Klezmer-inspired trio, the transcendent Fantasy on a Yiddish Song by David Evan Thomas, old Ukrainian folk tunes passed on through generations and the beloved Hungarian Dances by Brahms. The show will feature the imaginative and kinetic theatre group Impossible Salt, who specialize in folk stories and mythology, and will perform the Hungarian Dances with their exotic gypsy flair.

“Spotlight Series: From the Balkans to the Holy Land features pieces inspired by folk music from Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The program beautifully reflects the vivacious, poetic, and emotional streaks in each culture,” said Mischa Santora, artist director, MacPhail Spotlight Series. “It's also an impressive reminder that music is truly the universal language, transcending borders and languages, without losing any of its impact.”
