Join us September 19 at dusk for our third summer 2016 presentation at Gold Medal Park, featuring a screening of Sylvain Chomet's multi-award winning animated gem.

Years go by and Champion becomes worthy of his name. Now he is ready to enter the world-famous cycling race, the Tour de France.

However during this cycling contest two mysterious men in black kidnap Champion. Madame Souza and her faithful dog Bruno set out to rescue him. Their quest takes them across the ocean to a giant megalopolis called Belleville where th...ey encounter the renowned "Triplets of Belleville," three eccentric female music-hall stars from the ‘30s who decide to take Madame Souza and Bruno under their wing. Thanks to Bruno's brilliant sense of smell, the brave duo are soon on to Champion's trail. But will they succeed in beating the devilish plans of the evil French mafia?

September 18, 2016, Sunday - Schubert’s Death and the Maiden with Patricia Kopatchinskaja at Ted Mann Concert Hall

Time: 2:00pm

Location: Ted Mann Concert Hall,  2128 S 4th Street

Schubert’s Death and the Maiden with Patricia Kopatchinskaja

Program:
Klein: Partita for String Orchestra (arr. Saudek)
Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in D Minor
Anonymous: Byzantine Chant on Psalm 140 for String Orchestra (arr. Kopatchinskaja)
Schubert: Song D. 531 from Death and the Maiden Quartet for String Orchestra (arr. Wiancko)
Dowland: Pavan from Seaven Teares for String Quintet
Kurtág: Ligatura
Kurtág: “Ruhelos” (“Restless”) from Kafka Fragments
Schubert: Death and the Maiden Quartet for String Orchestra

Led by The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra musicians

Patricia Kopatchinskaja, director and violin

The opening half of this concert features Patricia Kopatchinskaja as soloist on Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto as well as Gideon Klein’s Partita for String Orchestra. Klein, along with many other artists, was forced into slavery by the Nazi regime, and wrote this work for violin, viola and cello while imprisoned in Theresienstadt Concentration Camp. After imaginative performances of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden in the 2014.15 season that were “bursting with life, full of urgency, anxiety, tumult and triumph” (Star Tribune), Kopatchinskaja restages her musical meditation on death. Works by Dowland, Kurtág and Schubert serve as interludes among movements of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden Quartet for String Orchestra to illuminate the work anew.

Tickets:

$10 – $50, kids and students free

ABOUT PATRICIA KOPATCHINSKAJA

Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja's versatility shows itself in her diverse repertoire, ranging from baroque and classical often played on gut strings, to new commissions and re-interpretations of modern masterworks.

Kopatchinskaja’s 2016/17 season commences with the opening concerts of the new SWR Symphonieorchester with whom she performs Peter Eötvös’ DoReMi Violin Concerto (with the composer himself conducting), and an appearance with NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra as part of the inaugural performances of the new Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg. She will also make her debuts with Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra performing Sibelius’ Violin Concerto under the baton of Krzysztof Urbański, and with Gotherburg Symphony - again with Peter Eötvös. Continuing her regular collaboration with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, she appears with them in London and New York under Vladimir Jurowski.

György Ligeti’s Violin Concerto is a particular focus of Kopatchinskaja’s current season; she will perform the work widely including with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Sir Simon Rattle, with Filharmonica della Scala under Andrés Orozco-Estrada, and with Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Teodor Currentzis.

This season Kopatchinskaja is Artist in Residence at three major European venues and festivals: at the Berlin Konzerthaus (where she will perform the Schumann and Sibelius Violin Concertos with the Konzerthaus Orchester under the baton of Iván Fischer and showcase a number of other chamber projects); at the Wigmore Hall in London; and at the Kissinger Sommer Festival (where she performs with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo). She also embarks upon several major European tours; with Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg under Gustavo Gimeno in the autumn and with Wiener Symphoniker and Musica Aeterna in the spring – both with Currentzis.

Last season’s highlights included a residency at the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, performances with the Houston and Seattle symphony orchestras and several appearances in London – both with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Jurowski and as the central figure of the ‘Changing Minds’ weekend at the Southbank Centre, where she performed Schumann’s Violin Concerto with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightment under the baton of Marin Alsop. Kopatchinskaja also toured with Camerata Salzburg under Langrée, with Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Thierry Fischer and with Jurowski and his State Academic Symphony Orchestra in Moscow.

Chamber music is immensely important to Kopatchinskaja and she performs regularly with artists such as Markus Hinterhäuser, Polina Leschenko, Anthony Romaniuk and Anu Komsi, appearing at such leading venues as the Berlin Konzerthaus, London’s Wigmore Hall, Vienna Konzerthaus and Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Kopatchinskaja is also an Artistic Partner with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and performs with the ensemble regularly, both in Saint Paul and internationally. They will undertake a major European tour together in November 2016, to co-incide with a new CD recording of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden scheduled for release later in the season.

A prolific recording artist, the last few seasons have seen a number of major releases; an album of Kancheli’s music with Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica, a disc of duos entitled TAKE TWO on Alpha Classics, a recording of Schumann’s Violin Concerto and Fantasy with WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln under Heinz Holliger for Audite, and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with Teodor Currentzis and Musica Aeterna on the Sony label. Kopatchinskaja’s release for Naïve Classique featuring concerti by Bartók, Ligeti and Peter Eötvös won Gramophone’s Recording of the Year Award in 2013, an ECHO Klassik Award and a 2014 Grammy nomination.

Dinner Detective Minneapolis

The Dinner Detective is America’s LARGEST, award-winning interactive comedic murder mystery dinner show! Our high-energy, modern-day whodunit is combined with a full four-course meal.

Our immensely popular murder mystery shows are set in the present day. Unlike other murder mystery dinner shows (or just dinner shows in general), with The Dinner Detective, you and your guests will not find themselves staring at cheesy costumes, there will be no recited campy dialogue and certainly no hokey song and dance. Our performers are dressed just like everyone else, leaving all of the guests to suspect who is a part of the show and who is not! All scripts are based on actual cold cases and are created in house. From the get go, the guests are seated with the performers and most likely will not realize it! Our Detectives enter the room, proceed to interrogate guests, find clues and start the investigation. This allows our guests to socialize with and interrogate each other, while deciphering real life-based clues. At the end of the night, prizes are awarded to the Top Sleuth who solves the crime!

Time: 7:30p

Location: Guthrie Theater, Dowling Studio, 818 S 2nd Street

zAmya Theater Project’s Home Street Home: Minneapolis

written by the zAmya Theater troupe with playwright Josef Evans

directed by Maren Ward

Described as a hyper-local conversation regarding housing and homelessness in Minneapolis and our neighborhood of Downtown East, Home Street Home: Minneapolis was inspired by interviews with people who live, work, play and pray downtown. The project, a program of St. Stephen’s Human Services, brings together homeless and housed individuals to create and perform theater. Home Street Home: Minneapolis follows street musician Zeke Cooper on a tour around the heart of the city where he’ll eavesdrop on skyway security guards and hear from residents in family shelters, condo dwellers, downtown church-goers, Vikings fans and panhandlers. Listen in as characters share experiences and change each other’s lives.
