Minneapolis Riverfront Tour

Walk the Minneapolis riverfront and learn about its dramatic past and bright future. Participants will visit the historic district at St. Anthony Falls, which was once the milling center of the world and is now a growing cultural, recreational and residential neighborhood. A guide from Mill City Museum will lead visitors onto the Stone Arch Bridge for a spectacular view of the falls, the historic buildings surrounding it and downtown Minneapolis, and tell stories of the people who have worked and lived in the area and how it has changed over the years.

The tour includes one mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility. The tour will begin and end at Mill City Museum, where participants can visit the museum’s gallery, included in the price of the tour. Tours are held rain or shine.

Minneapolis Bike Tour

The recreational bike tour for all ages and abilities spans the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway System. Proceeds from the Minneapolis Bike Tour will benefit bike safety and education events for Minneapolis youth as well as bike trail improvement projects throughout the system.
 
There will be three routes to participate in, 16-mile, 25-mile and 32-mile, and they are closed to motorized traffic. All routes include stops with refreshments and bike mechanics. Stick around after the ride to enjoy LIVE music, beer available to participants 21+ (must show ID), food fromlocal vendors, exhibitor booths and Bike Tour merchandise for sale!

Bre Lewis is an aspiring singer songwriter who writes tunes based off of her personal experiences. Her musical interests began with playing on her grandmother’s organ, singing along with the radio, and taking on any opportunity she could to be surrounded in music. Raised in a small town in Minnesota, she moved to Minneapolis in hopes to pursue a professional career in music. You will find Bre’s music is inspired by idols such as Adele, the Hush Sound, Paramore, Ben Folds, and Sara Bareilles.

Community Booth, all day: Compatible Technologies International is a nonprofit organization that alleviates hunger and poverty in the developing world by designing and distributing simple, affordable food and water tools. They will demo grain grinders and other inventions that are changing lives around the world.

Location: Matthews Park, Minneapolis. Meet in the parking lot north of the park. Parking is free.

Bike with a Ranger is a family-friendly way to explore the Mississippi River. Join us this summer on a three-hour, nine mile ride. (For exercise enthusiasts, each ride may burn up to 350 calories for a 150 lb person!)

See the Mississippi River's only major waterfall and explore the great river's only gorge. We will ride through modern parks while exploring the river's ancient geology and its extraordinary human history that led to the founding of the Twin Cities and its development into a regional and worldwide economic powerhouse.

Minnesota Opera artists are presenting free Opera Viva! performances and educational events at five Hennepin County libraries this fall during a season-long Minnesota Opera Residency at the Library.

The residency continues in October with Opera Viva! Opera 101 events at Northeast Library, Wednesday, Oct. 8, 6:30 p.m., and at Nokomis Library, Thursday, Oct. 16, 6:30 p.m. Edina Library will host opera stars of tomorrow at Opera Viva! In Recital, Wednesday, Oct. 22, 6:30 p.m.

“Minnesota Opera is thrilled to bring our artists into Hennepin County libraries this season to share the joy, humor and drama of the operatic art form,” said Minnesota Opera Teaching Artist Angie Keeton. “It will be a great opportunity for community members to engage directly with our talented artists and artistic staff.”

Opera Viva! events throughout Minnesota Opera’s 2014-2015 season in residence at the Library will teach about opera through song, performance and conversation.

"Trapped by History: the Past and Future of the Upper Mississippi River"

River Life and the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Minnesota are very pleased to announce the program "Trapped by History: the Past and Future of the Upper Mississippi River" by National Park Service Superintendent John Anfinson.

The Mississippi River today has become an artifact of human construction because of human changes to biological and physical systems over the past 150 years. Navigation improvements, floodplain levees, a refuge and even early biological manipulations have transformed the upper Mississippi River’s physical and ecological character. A key question we face today is: Are we trapped by that history, or can we make changes that will ensure that the river’s ecosystems are healthy and abundant? In his presentation, Dr. John O. Anfinson will try answer these questions and hint at where the upper Mississippi River may be headed. Anfinson’s talk is part of a series of public events associated with the John E. Sawyer Seminar “Making the Mississippi: Formulating new water narratives for the 21st century and beyond.”

Beginning with the arrival of Minnesota’s first rail line in 1862, Minneapolis boomed in population. Flour milling, lumber production and warehousing took off as a rail network extended throughout the Upper Midwest. Take a guided tour to discover the impact of railroads on the Mill City, visiting railroad landmarks such as the Stone Arch Bridge, Milwaukee Road Depot and the Minneapolis Eastern Railway engine house and trestle. Along the way find clues to the vanishing railroad landscape and learn about the future of Twin Cities rail.

The exhibition Club Disminución (“Club of Diminishing Returns”) was instigated by Alexa Horochowski’s artist residency at Casa Poli in Coliumo, Chile, 2012/2013.

Designed by architects Mauricio Pezo and Sofía Ellrichshausen, Casa Poli, a minimalist, concrete cube, functions as a cultural art center/artist studio. Built on a jagged cliff overlooking the Pacific, 30 miles from Chile’s second largest city, Concepción, Casa Poli appears perched at the end of the world. It offers views of the ocean from three of the cardinal points (South, West, and North), and directly below Casa Poli, the surf pounds into a narrow cave. The separation between landscape and architecture is indistinct.

In her pursuit of the physicality of form, Alexa Horochowski uses a wide range of elemental media to render sculptures that defy their native qualities. Hard becomes soft, soft becomes hard, gestures are frozen. Natural objects, flotsam, and ‘naturalized’ garbage, combined with studio-generated objects, suggest a post-human natural history of the future.

Sculpture, video, and large-scale digital prints work together to depict the struggle between the human drive to create lasting symbols of culture, and Nature’s indifferent, persistent erasure of these symbols. The landscape is distilled into distinctive objects that are charged with elements of the alien or unknown.

Horochowski molds cochayuyo (Durivillaea antartica, kelp that grows on the shores of Chile below Casa Poli) into cuboidal forms that merge the mechanical with the organic/living. Sponges are translated into bronze so that they resemble pumice, and natural materials take on the qualities of man-made objects. The work explores entropy and the passing of time by imitating the natural processes of accretion and aggregation found in caves or the persistent impression left by fauna and water on architecture and the landscape. A fossil of a credit card heralds a post-consumer future, beyond the Era of the Anthropocene.
