October 10, 2019, Thursday - 2019-2020 Next Generation of Parks™ Event Series, featuring Mitchell J. Silver

Time: 7 PM – 10 PM

Location: University of Minnesota - Rapson Hall, 89 Church Street SE

2019-2020 Next Generation of Parks™ Event Series, featuring Mitchell J. Silver

Join us for opening night of the 2019-2020 Next Generation of Parks™ Event Series, featuring Mitchell J. Silver, Commissioner of NYC Parks.

In 2014, the City of New York launched the $285 million Community Parks Initiative, which reinvests in historically underfunded neighborhoods that have higher concentrations of poverty, are densely populated, or rapidly growing.

One of the most acclaimed urban planners in the United States, Commissioner Silver will bring his characteristic humor and insight to this presentation and share how New York is concentrating on four critical aspects of parks:

1. Swapping out asphalt for greenspace
2. Planning for an aging population and multi-generational use
3. Seamlessly integrating the public realm through Parks Without Borders
4. Leveraging parks as “the first line of defense” in climate change.

As Minneapolis and cities throughout the metropolitan area seek to equitably invest in our parks by connecting people to nature, adapting to a changing climate, and supporting community health, Commissioner Silver has a lot to share with us about the value of inclusion, planning for a new future, and thinking about who truly benefits from parks.

As always, this is a free event.

Time: 6p -8p

Location:  611 E Franklin Avenue

A Public History of Interstate 35W

Join us for A Public History of I-35W. The construction of I-35W connected people across Hennepin County while also displacing hundreds of South Minneapolis residents. Greg Donofrio and Denise Pike of the Heritage Studies and Public History Program at the University of Minnesota are leading a research project that looks into the history of the I-35W corridor.

Come hear about what they’ve learned in the early stages of their research, including stories and actions of people living along this corridor. Attendees will also learn about ways they can get involved in this collaborative community history project.

This event is part of the 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown project between 43rd St. and 15th St. in Minneapolis. More info: mndot.gov/35w94

October 9, 2019, Wednesday - An evening with GB Leighton at Aster Cafe

Time: 8p - 10p

Location: Aster Cafe, 125 SE Main Street

An evening with GB L

Save your spot at AsterCafe.com - $15 Cover charges on the tab.

More than 200 shows a year. Jubilant fans who follow him from Minnesota to Mexico. More than 70,000 albums sold. A crushing live-performance DVD. And now even a state-of-the-art nightclub named after one of his songs — all without the support of a major record label…

Meet GB Leighton, a band named after one of the region’s most incendiary live performers and consistently eightonsolid songwriters, Brian Leighton. Through more than a decade and nine studio albums, Leighton and his six-piece band have been tearing up rock clubs, church fundraisers and even a few fan’s living rooms with a slew of songs that connect with the heart and couples singing along out on the dance floor. “A man of the people” is a phrase usually reserved for statesmen and politicians, but for Leighton, whose politics are more conservative and libertarian, it’s a fitting description when you see him in action working a joint, or on his 2006 DVD, Live at the Minnesota Music Café.

Tickets ($15 for ASI members and $20 for non-members) can be purchased from ASI at the link above.

Can't make the book launch? Ola Larsmo will also be doing a talk/signing during the "Afternoons at ASI" program at 1 p.m. More info: https://www.facebook.com/events/375247389822574/

About "Swede Hollow":
Gustaf and Anna Klar and their three children dream of starting over when they leave Sweden for New York, finally settling in a cluster of rough-hewn shacks in a deep, wooded ravine on the edge of St. Paul, Minnesota. This haunting story of a real place echoes the larger challenges of immigration in the twentieth century and today.
