Baking Memories: The Rise of Convenience Foods

Fee: Programs included with museum admission of $11 adults, $9 seniors and college students, $6 children ages 6-17; free for MNHS members.

The postwar years of the late 1940s and 1950s ushered in a new era of kitchen conveniences. Many of the technologies that made this possible were developed by the American food industry during the Second World War. Did housewives want these easy-to-use products and appliances or were food companies creating a market for their goods by exaggerating the drudgery of home cooking? Using the example of the cake mix, this demonstration will answer this question, highlighting the dramatic changes in cooking habits during this era and how those innovations affect our lives today. Visitors will learn about food history, sample cakes made from scratch and from mix and take home a copy of a recipe.

October 8, 2014, Wednesday - Approaching the Gate: Lynette Reini-Grandell at The Loft

Time: 7:00pm

Location: The Loft at Open Book (Performance Hall), 1011 Washington Ave S

Approaching the Gate: Lynette Reini-Grandell

Lynette Reini-Grandell’s long-anticipated debut collection of poetry quickens with forward movement, be it in a car that pushes towards the stars—or with a horse that suddenly spooks, leaving the speaker “knocked down, / breathless, / turning to the sight of a thousand-pound horse/ rushing the gate / and leaping over my head.” Several of the poems probe the experience of her grandparents who emigrated from Finland and settled on a farm in northern Minnesota in the early 20th century. The urge to move forward is matched with a deep love and reverence for creatures living in their natural world, for the buzz of the city, for unmet ancestors and kindred spirits, and most especially for her transgender husband.

October Sip of Science - The Secret Life of a Tweet with Joanne Richardson, River Life, University of Minnesota

The rise of social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter enables people to communicate information instantaneously, whether it be a breaking news story, interesting video, or personal updates. While some of the content and contributions from social media users may have us rolling our eyes, the information conveyed through these media portals connects individuals and organizations who may not have connected otherwise. For example, social media is increasingly bringing good science to a wide, interested, and influential audience. Join us at the October Sip of Science as we use a case studies approach to explore the communications of a well-regarded academic scientist to explore the knowledge ecologies of social media communications.
