The Big Gay Race 5K is back and bigger than ever for its fourth year!   It has become a symbol of a diverse community of Minnesotans coming together in support of love, commitment, marriage, and family.

Join us as we show our lawmakers that “We’ve Got Your Back”! The 2014 election cycle is heating up, and showing our legislators that they have our support for their “yes” vote on marriage is critical. We have to ensure that we keep a pro-marriage majority in the Minnesota House of Representatives, and joining us for the Big Gay Race 2014 is one important way to do that!

Proceeds from the Big Gay Race 2014 will go to support the efforts of the MN United PAC.

Walkers are welcome, and will probably make up about half of the entire field. So no excuses!

October 18, 2014, Saturday - Rock the Lock! - Saint Anthony Falls Paddlefest Hosted by Above the Falls Sports - CANCELED

UPDATE VIA FACEBOOK 10/7/14:

NOTICE: Rock the Lock is regretfully being postponed.
Unfortunately, due to some permitting constraints and their associated time sensitivity we are being forced to postpone Rock the Lock. Also, being that Minnesota turns into an icy and lifeless abyss around this time of year, we have to postpone this event until the spring instead of just pushing it back a few weeks. Good news: word on the street is that the lock may not be officially closing until June, so we still have time! Also, moving it to the spring gives us a chance to celebrate the Mississippi, the Upper Saint Anthony lock, AND the end of winter! Thank you to anyone who has and will continue to support this awesome event, and we hope to see you in the spring!!!

Rock the Lock! - Saint Anthony Falls Paddlefest Hosted by Above the Falls Sports

Rock the Lock is a day of fun and adventure to celebrate Minneapolis, St. Anthony Falls, and the Mississippi while raising money for youth outdoor recreation. Hoping to "Rock the Lock", EVERYONE IS WELCOME to join us in PADDLING THE UPPER ST. ANTHONY LOCK for the LAST time! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be the last paddlers through the 75-foot lock before its complete closure to ALL boat traffic. After this urban paddling adventure, it's back to Muse to kick off a concert where there will be plenty of fun, food and drink, information, and ROCK N' ROLL!!

We have a passion for outdoor recreation and believe in the importance of providing outdoor recreation opportunities for youth. To help make a difference for youth in our community, all of the proceeds from this event are being donated to local organizations dedicated to getting youth outdoors and active. Along with raising money for our community, it's also incredibly important to recognize the historic significance of the Upper St. Anthony Lock. This event is the last chance to experience first-hand, the rich history and many opportunities the Upper Lock and Mississippi have given to Minneapolis. Don't miss out on this incredible (and incredibly fun) opportunity!

October 17, 2014, Friday - "Can We Harvest Rainwater for Indoor Use?" at McKnight Foundation

Time:  8:00am – 9:30am

Location: McKnight Foundation, 710 Second Street South, Suite 400

"Can We Harvest Rainwater for Indoor Use?"

As green infrastructure receives greater attention for its potential to help communities protect water resources, so do rainwater capture and re-use opportunities. Here in Minnesota, a common perception is that state laws prohibit harvest and re-use of stormwater for indoor uses like toilet flushing—but is this just a myth? Why, truly, don’t we see more projects harvest rainwater for indoor use, especially as we deepen our understanding of the need to reduce demand on our limited water resources? The answer is part governance, part economics and part persistence. Saint Paul’s Lowertown Regional Ballpark (currently under construction and will be home to the St. Paul Saints) will harvest rainwater for indoor use—Minnesota’s first such municipal project. Come hear how this project navigated regulatory issues, why the City of Saint Paul sees it as an important opportunity to demonstrate sustainable water management and how others can apply lessons learned from this project.

The topic is particularly timely, given that the MN Plumbing Board is updating the Plumbing Code—and is considering the recommendations of an interagency Water Reuse Group on rainwater harvesting. Speaker Wes Saunders-Pearce is the City of Saint Paul’s Water Resources Coordinator and was instrumental in incorporating a rainwater harvesting program at the Lowertown Regional Ballpark. Note: Our hosts at the McKnight Foundation have a new check-in process. When you arrive, please be prepared to sign in at the front desk and get a visitor pass.

Light breakfast provided. Free. RSVP to lark_weller@nps.gov.

October 15, 2014, Wednesday - 2040 Bicycle Transportation Plan Open House at Central Library

Time: 4:00pm -  6:30pm

Location: Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall

Hennepin County and Three Rivers Park District have worked together on updating a county-wide plan that reflects the growing use of bicycling in the region. The Hennepin County 2040 Bicycle Transportation Plan emphasizes a safe and comfortable system that encourages “interested but concerned” bicyclists to bike for everyday trips. The draft plan would add 536 miles of bike lanes, protected bike lanes, cycle tracks, trails and shoulders to the existing 651-mile system. It reflects input gathered from more than 2,700 people, as well as cities and other stakeholders.

Now the county and park district are seeking public comments on the plan before a revised version is brought before the county board of commissioners for approval early next year. The public comment period begins Monday, October 6 and runs through Friday, December 5.

There are several options for reviewing and providing comments on the bicycle plan. It is posted at hennepin.us/bikeplan, where copies can also be downloaded, and printed copies are available at all 41 locations within the Hennepin County library system.

The plan will also be presented at open houses and other public events during the comment period:

Public open houses
• October 15, 4-6:30 pm at the Minneapolis Central Library
• October 21, 5-7:30 pm at Fish Lake Regional Park, Maple Grove
• November 5, 5-7:30 pm at Hennepin County Library — Wayzata, Wayzata
• November 13, 5-7:30 pm at Hennepin County Library — Brookdale, Brooklyn Center

Other public events
• October 11, 8 am-noon at the Autumn Woods Classic at Elm Creek Park Reserve, Maple Grove
• October 18, 8-11 am, Richfield Farmers Market at Veteran’s Memorial Park, Richfield
• October 20, 12:30-4 pm Workplace Bicycle Commuter Forum at Quality Bicycle Products, Bloomington
• October 25, 8-11 am, Hopkins Farmers Market, Hopkins

In addition, county staff are available to present the bike plan to interest groups or at events during the public comment period.
