November 14, 2017, Tuesday - Big Ideas: Look, featuring Solmaz Sharif at the Loft

Time: 7 PM

Location: The Loft, 1011 Washington Avenue S

Big Ideas: Look, featuring Solmaz Sharif

For many, it's easy to look away. Dominant narratives and histories erase injustices against human lives and allow for ignorance—willful or otherwise—of the pain and trauma endured by people who are marginalized.

In this Big Ideas, featuring poet Solmaz Sharif, we'll discuss work that counters the narrative of privilege and compels us to look.

This event is presented in collaboration with the College of Saint Benedict and Graywolf Press. It is also part of the Loft's thematic programming, Vigilance.

VIGILANCE
Much like how an art museum might present a special exhibit, the Loft is introducing seasonal thematic programming. Our themes will help connect you across many of the Loft program offerings. We believe that poems and stories can be an important lens through which to view the world, and these themes will compel us all to look at the words we write and authors we read in new ways.

This fall, our theme will be Vigilance: How can poems and stories help us to maintain attention over long periods of time? How does language bear witness? Through the theme of Vigilance, the Loft will explore the ways in which words help us hold light in the darkness.

We invite you to explore our fall theme of Vigilance in as many ways as interest you. The video and listings below highlight the ideas and opportunities to participate throughout the fall.

TICKETS
Advanced tickets guarantee a general admission seat and help cover the Loft's costs to host the event. Pay-what-you-can tickets are available at the door 30 minutes prior to the event on a first-come, first-served basis. No one turned away for lack of funds. Doors open 30 minutes before the event. Seating is general admission (not assigned).

November 11, 2017, Saturday - Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Time: 10:30 am - Noon

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, 415 Main Street SE

Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Discover the story of the National Historic Landmark Pillsbury A Mill, the largest flour mill in the world for many years, which recently reopened as the A-Mill Artist Lofts. A Mill City Museum guide will lead a tour of the former milling complex, including the rooftop deck and the basement waterpower facilities. Visitors will explore parts of the largest and best-preserved waterpower system in Minneapolis (with views straight down a 50-foot drop shaft); discover how the building functioned during the flour milling era and learn about the new hydroelectric plant that helps to power the complex.

The Pillsbury A Mill was the flagship mill of the Pillsbury Flour Milling Company. The A Mill was not only the largest flour mill in the world when it opened in 1881, it was one of the few architect-designed mills in Minneapolis, designed by Leroy S. Buffington. As such it was an industrial show piece and tourist attraction from the start. The Pillsbury A Mill ceased operation in 2003, and in 2015, the complex was redeveloped as affordable lofts for working artists by Dominium, a Minneapolis-based developer.

Please meet at the gray door on Third Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the A-Mill Artist Loft main entrance at 315 Main Street SE). The tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately-paced walking indoors and outdoors with some uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

This tour is presented in partnership with Dominium, A-Mill Artist Lofts.

November 11, 2017, Saturday - Demolition Dreaming Screening at Traffic Zone

Time: 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Location: Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art, 250 3rd Avenue N

Demolition Dreaming Screening

Demolition Dreaming is a short animated feature about change in the Gateway District of Minneapolis. The ‘Gateway’ was an area of downtown completely destroyed under the auspices of federal urban renewal efforts in the 1950s and 1960s. The feature tells the story of a family and the hotel they run on Hennepin Avenue. We see what happens to their world, their neighbors and community as the wrecking ball of change topples the buildings they occupy and carts the detritus of this destruction to the quarry where a suburban style shopping center now stands.
