March 10, 2018, Saturday - Spotlight Series at MacPhail

Time:  8:00pm, Pre-concert lecture at 7 p.m.

Location: MacPhail Center for Music, 501 2nd Street S

Antonio Vivaldi was one of history’s most prolific composers, with his best works hitting the classical top-ten charts for centuries.

Enjoy the colorful ingenuity of his Four Seasons, performed by two virtuoso MacPhail violinists and the MacPhail Chamber Orchestra. Highlighting the music’s shifting textures and moods will be projected images by Minnesota photographers Alice Gebura and Layne Kennedy, who capture the four seasons in all their glory.

The Vivaldi is paired with its 20th-century counterpart, The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla. This 20th-century work borrows themes from Vivaldi and mixes them with the irresistibly sultry harmonies of Tango tunes.

Vivaldi: Concerto for Oboe in F Major
Carrie Vecchione, oboe; Gail Olszewski, harpsichord
Vivaldi: Il Furore
Andrea Leap, soprano; members of the MacPhail Chamber Orchestra
Vivaldi: The Four Seasons
Piazzolla: The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires
Stephanie Arado and Marc Levine, solo violin; MacPhail Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Mischa Santora

Marvelous and Donald have built their American dream in Minnesota, so when Tendi requests a traditional African blessing before marrying her white fiancé from Minnetonka and a surprise guest drops a bombshell, the rehearsal dinner can’t come soon enough. March 9, 2018, Friday - Almighty Voice and his Wife opens at Southern Theater (3 nights)

Times: see show link below

Location: Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Avenue South

Almighty Voice and his Wife presented by Turtle Theater Collective

March 9-11, 2018

Turtle Theater Collective presents the U.S. premiere of Almighty Voice and his Wife, an iconic text of the Native theater canon by Delaware playwright Daniel David Moses. Almighty Voice and his Wife tells the true story of a Cree man arrested for killing a cow. Under threat of hanging he escapes, unleashing a year-long manhunt that gives rise to his status as a martyr and a legend. The work consists of two vividly contrasting acts that explore Almighty Voice as both victim and hero. The first act is a tender and intimate portrait of him and his wife in life; the second is an outlandish white-faced vaudeville routine of the two in the afterlife.

March 4, 2018, Sunday - Martin Fröst Plays Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto at Ted Mann Concert Hall

Time: 2:00pm

Location: Ted Mann Concert Hall, 2128 Fourth Street S

Martin Fröst Plays Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto

One of Mozart’s finest concertos for any instrument and his last instrumental composition, the Clarinet Concerto, was inspired by the talents of clarinetist Anton Stadler and was actually written for the unusual bassett clarinet, a special clarinet championed by Stadler with an extended range in the lower end. SPCO Artistic Partner Martin Fröst performs the concerto in the original version in the most spectacular fashion and conducts the SPCO in the first of Mozart’s final three Symphonies.

Clarinetist, conductor and Sony Classical recording artist Martin Fröst is known for pushing musical boundaries and has been described by The New York Times as having “a virtuosity and a musicianship unsurpassed by any clarinetist—perhaps any instrumentalist—in my memory.” He has appeared with orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Israel Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra and Orchestre National de France. In 2017.18 he notably returns to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and makes his debut with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. He also appears with the NDR Radiophilharmonie, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Residentie Orkest.

Fröst will be Chief Conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra starting in the 2019.20 season. Known for artistic collaborations worldwide, this season he continues as Artistic Partner with both the SPCO and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic orchestras, and will also be Artist in Residence at L’Auditiori, Barcelona appearing with the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona I Nacional de Catalunya and performing a number of chamber concerts. These positions follow his success in recent seasons as Artist-in-Residence at the Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Gothenburg Symphony and London’s Wigmore Hall.

In autumn 2017, Fröst is joined by Janine Jansen, Lucas Debargue and Torleif Thedéen to release Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, his second recording for Sony Classics. Together this season, the quartet will give performances of the work worldwide.

March 3, 2018, Saturday - Carnaval Brasileiro at Cedar Cultural Center

Via a February 7 Press Release:

Brazilfest MN's Carnaval Brasileiro celebrates its 16th anniversary with an intimate Masquerade Ball on Saturday, March 3rd!

The most attended and longest-running annual Brazilian festival in the Twin Cities teams up with the Cedar Cultural Center for the 16th annual Carnaval Brasileiro on Saturday, March 3rd, at one of the premier live music venues in Minneapolis, internationally respected for top quality world music events. The site brings the focus back to the sound quality of a smaller venue, with hopes for a more enjoyable sonic experience for longtime attendees and newcomers alike. Carnaval will be an all-ages show and will start and end a bit earlier than previous years.

Over 60 singers, musicians, samba dancers, actors and artisans will transform the Cedar Cultural Center into an authentically festive Brazilian cultural experience!

Guitarist/vocalist Robert Everest and his ten-piece group Beira Mar Brasil will host the Carnaval Brasileiro Masquerade Ball from 7pm to 12 midnight. Everest, who also serves as Executive Director, has been joyfully exploring Brazilian music and culture for over 25 years and brings us authentic Brazilian carnival flavor through various musical genres from around the country – Samba, Axé, Frevo, Baião, and other dance-inducing styles. Joining Beira Mar Brasil for the twelfth straight year, direct from Salvador da Bahia, Brazil’s famous party-loving city, will be singer and samba dancer extraordinaire, Dandara Odara, who performs at over 50 carnival celebrations around the world each year in Europe, North America, and of course, Brazil.

Along with Beira Mar Brasil, Carnaval Brasileiro 2018 will present more performers and performance groups than ever before, including Brazilian percussion ensembles Batucada Do Norte and Drumheart, professional samba dancers/instructors Ginga da Bahia, Leonardo Paixão, Edilson Lima (who has been featured on Ellen DeGeneres) and Vanessa Luiz from São Paulo, Brazil, as well as Brazilian martial arts group Capoeira Floração of Minnesota

Carnaval guests can participate in Brazilian dance lessons, purchase authentic carnival masks created by master Brazilian artisan Goretti Aamot, and have their face and body painted just like they do it in Rio!

The annual Carnaval, celebrated throughout Brazil, lasts nearly a week and has roots dating back to the 1700s. Like Mardi Gras, Carnaval is an all-out party with music, masks, dancing, food and drink – a final blowout before Lenten traditions kick in for the Easter season. This Minneapolis edition of Carnaval takes place after it is celebrated in Brazil, allowing for many of the special guests to come to Minneapolis.

TICKETS:  $22 in advance, $30 at the door. Available now at the Electric Fetus, Depth of Field, and thecedar.org.
