July 11, 2017, Tuesday - The Basilica of St. Mary Behind the Scenes Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm

Starting point: Basilica Front Portico, at 88 17th Street North

The first United States cathedral to be designated a “Basilica,” this historic building annually draws tens of thousands of visitors from around the world, and is truly a living landmark. From the 1960s through the 1980s, freeway construction and demographic changes reduced the number of parishioners attending the Basilica, and the building experienced a corresponding decline. Since 1991 there have been over 20 projects to stabilize, preserve, and restore the facilities.

Experience spaces at the Basilica complex that are not generally available to the public. The tour may include access to the Sacristy, Choir Loft, lower bell tower, a peek into the attic and organ pipe chambers, the basement below the Chancel, boiler room, and recently renovated Rectory fourth floor.

The tour guide is Chuck Liddy. This tour will climb circular stairs and/or vertical ladders and is not ADA-accessible. Please wear close-toed shoes with no heels, and no skirts.

July 8, 2017, Saturday - Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Time: 10:00pm - Noon

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, 415 Main Street SE

Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Future dates: July 23, August 26, September 9

Discover the story of the National Historic Landmark Pillsbury A Mill, the largest flour mill in the world for many years, which recently reopened as the A-Mill Artist Lofts. A Mill City Museum guide will lead a tour of the former milling complex, including the rooftop deck and the basement waterpower facilities. Visitors will explore parts of the largest and best-preserved waterpower system in Minneapolis (with views straight down a 50-foot drop shaft); discover how the building functioned during the flour milling era and learn about the new hydroelectric plant that helps to power the complex.

The Pillsbury A Mill was the flagship mill of the Pillsbury Flour Milling Company. The A Mill was not only the largest flour mill in the world when it opened in 1881, it was one of the few architect-designed mills in Minneapolis, designed by Leroy S. Buffington. As such it was an industrial show piece and tourist attraction from the start. The Pillsbury A Mill ceased operation in 2003, and in 2015, the complex was redeveloped as affordable lofts for working artists by Dominium, a Minneapolis-based developer.

Please meet at the gray door on Third Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the A-Mill Artist Loft main entrance at 315 Main Street SE). The tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately-paced walking indoors and outdoors with some uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

This tour is presented in partnership with Dominium, A-Mill Artist Lofts.

July 6, 2017, Thursday - First Thursdays in the Arts District at Northrup King Building

Time: 5:00pm - 9:00pm

Location: Northrup King Building, 1500 Jackson Street NE (see below for full list of studios)

First Thursdays in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District is an Open Studio and Gallery Tour held the first Thursday of each month. Many NEMAA member artists and galleries (including a multitude of painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, ceramists, textile and fiber artists, jewelers, and furniture showrooms) open their studios at the Northrup King Building located in the heart of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.

During the July 6 event, be sure to stop by 3rd Floor Gallery (Suite 332) at 7pm to see a locally made animated feature set partly in Northeast Minneapolis. The film Demolition Dreaming is the work of Northeast animator and NEMAA member John Akre, and is presented as part of NEMAA's Art N/Motion series.
It begins and ends at the site of the Quarry Shopping Center in Northeast Minneapolis. The movie is a fantasy of the Minneapolis Gateway District, a part of the city that was completely destroyed during the days of urban renewal in the 1950's and early 1960's. The movie tells the story of a sign-painter and his family, who run a residence hotel, and some of the people who live there. It features music by Dreamland Faces and narration by Jill Underwood.
