July 13, 2013, Saturday - Midwest Tomato Fest

Time: 2:00pm-7:00pm

Location: 395 Portland Avenue South

We understand that this event seems wasteful, but in fact it is resourceful. Here is how:

There are many farmers that grow tomatoes within the United States... After every season there are tomatoes that spoil, are inedible, and therefore cannot be sold or given away to be consumed. Naturally, inedible tomatoes = waste. We figure if these tomatoes cannot be marked for human consumption, we will collect the “waste” from farmers and throw a great event. This event intends to be an annual festival for Midwest states that will help contribute to local economies. In addition, we will donate part of the proceeds to fight hunger to dedicated organizations. In the past two years, we have donated to local organizations that fight hunger. Instead of the tomatoes actually ending up as waste, we are recycling the tomatoes. We would never destroy perfectly good tomatoes.

Thank you,
Midwest Tomato Fest

Wilderness Inquiry Mississippi River Day Trip: Paddle with Explorer Ann Bancroft

Join us for a day on the Mississippi River with preeminent polar explorer, Ann Bancroft. Ann is an author, educator, sought-after speaker and philanthropist and, we're very proud to say, a lifelong member of the WI Trail Staff.

Day trips are an introductory half-day canoe experience on the Mighty Mississippi River. They're a great way for you and your family to experience our community and its wild places from a whole new vantage point.

There is always more to nature than meets the eye and on this trip, you'll get a closer look at the amazing connections between the Mississippi River and the many native critters that depend on her. You'll travel by canoe with experienced river guides and a National Park Ranger for a great day of paddling and exploring river life. This is a unique, hands-on experience that's fun for the whole family!

We provide Voyageur canoes, safety and paddling equipment, experienced staff, and a shuttle. Please bring weather appropriate clothing and a bag lunch. Day trips involve and engage everyone regardless of their age, ability, or previous outdoor experience.

Proceeds from this event will provide scholarships for schools and youth groups to experience the Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures Program.
