Fuji-Ya & Riverfront Revival Presentation
Join Kimmy Tanaka and Jonathan Moore for a presentation on Fuji-Ya founder Reiko Weston and how the riverside dining spot transformed the city of Minneapolis.
After a century of milling, the Minneapolis central riverfront became a landscape that the city had turned its back on. Enter Reiko Weston, a Japanese immigrant in her early 30s. Determined to establish a new home for her Japanese restaurant, Fuji-Ya, Weston boldly purchased a burned-out flour mill on the riverfront in 1968, said to be the first public building constructed within view of St. Anthony Falls in more than 70 years. The restaurant would serve as an early catalyst for a wave of revitalization efforts in the area.
This presentation is based on Kimmy Tanaka and Jonathan Moore's Minnesota History magazine article, "Fuji-Ya, Second to None: Reiko Weston's Role in Reconnecting Minneapolis and the Mississippi River."

The 2019 Progressive® Insurance Minneapolis Boat Show® cruises back to the Minneapolis Convention Center January 24-27, 2019 with four days of summer fun to help beat the winter blues. The region’s longest running boat show and annual family-friendly favorite offers visitors a one-stop shopping experience with hundreds of the newest boats, latest marine accessories and new marine technologies. This year’s boat show includes an appearance from summertime favorite Twin Cities Beach Blast, featuring a display of past winners of the Milk Carton Boat Race and an all-new, marine-themed Sandcastle.
Visitors will also enjoy returning favorites like the Antique & Classic Boat Display; the Boating Skills Virtual Trainer, where attendees can set out on a simulated “boat trip” to practice boating skills. Winners of the 2019 Minneapolis Innovation Awards, which honors manufacturers of the best new products in the boating industry, will be featured during the show, and are chosen on Wednesday, January 23 during the show’s “Sneak Preview” night.

Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity before diving into book arts.

Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Arts presents: Floyd Collins

In 1925, while chasing a dream of fame and fortune by turning a Kentucky cave into a tourist attraction, Floyd Collins himself became the attraction when he got trapped 200 feet underground. Alone but for sporadic contact with the outside world, Floyd fought for his sanity and ultimately his life as the rescue effort above exploded into the first genuine media circus. Reporters and gawkers from across the country descended on the property, fueling the hysteria and manipulating the nation into holding its collective breath. This haunting musical -- one of the most acclaimed in recent years -- tells the transcendent tale of a true American dreamer.

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Free Family Music Series: The Bazillions
Jam with The Bazillions, a kid-friendly indie rock band. The Bazillions are the creation of Twin Cities’ parents/educators/singer-songwriters Adam and Kristin Marshall. A free, family event for music-loving families and those who want to explore music for the first time! The centerpiece of this series is a live concert. Before and after each concert, the musicians will give free sample lessons to kids and adults on the instruments featured in the concert. Sing Play Learn with MacPhail® staff will also be on site to engage families in a music-themed art project. Light refreshments will follow the concert. The Bazillions features MacPhail faculty member Adam Marshall.

Ta-coumba Aiken Opening Reception
Ta–coumba is a Twin Cities artist, arts administrator, educator and community activist who focuses on public art and collaborative projects. His “rhythm paintings” on paper and canvas are loose and lively. He has participated in the creation of over 300 murals and public art sculptures with themes ranging from local history to the artist's own style of rhythmic pattern and spirit writing. The artist has served on the boards of the Minneapolis Arts Commission, the African American Cultural Arts Center, Forecast Public Arts, and the St. Paul Art Collective and has acted as an advisor on the arts for both the City of St. Paul and the City of Minneapolis. He has been the recipient of awards including a Pollock–Krasner Foundation Fellowship and a Bush Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship. His painting entitled, “Forever Saint Paul” was awarded the Guinness Book World Record for the most Lite-Brite pegs ever used (596,000+) to create a painting. This piece is permanently located in the Saint Paul Union Depot. His works can be found in public and private collections including those of the Walker Art Center, The McKnight Foundation, General Mills, Herbie Hancock, Taj Mahal, and Maya Angelou.
Ta-coumba Aiken is really Alofts beginning of a deeper engagement with the arts. Karen and I have been hanging small exhibitions in Alofts Lounge for the last 6 years. As a result, Aloft has expressed their desire to offer more time for openings and to allow us to schedule artists talks, panel discussions, or activities that enrich the exhibition experience. Please come and support this effort as we would like to see this grow and mature.

Capacity is 250 runners at a time, additional runners will be able to enter as previous runners leave. Participating individuals must be running - walking is not allowed except for cooling down post-run. Strollers are prohibited.

2018 Memoir Writing Project Student Reading
Participants from the year-long 2018 Memoir Writing Project will read. The Memoir Writing Project is led by Nicole Helget.
Nicole Helget is the author of a memoir, The Summer of Ordinary Ways (Borealis Books), two novels, The Turtle Catcher and Stillwater (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), and three middle-grade novels, Horse Camp, co-authored with Nate LeBoutiller (Egmont), Wonder at the Edge of the World, and the forthcoming Fern’s Grove (Little, Brown and Company).
Helget was selected as a Barnes and Nobles “Discover Great New Writers” and “Featured Authors,” and has starred reviews from Booklist and Publisher’s Weekly. Her work has earned the Tamarack Award and Speakeasy Prize, as well as Midwest Selections Pick, several Minnesota Book Award nominations, and two Minnesota State Arts Board grants.
Featured reviews have appeared in People magazine and “Weekend Edition” on National Public Radio. She works and lives in St. Peter, MN, with her family.
