The Loft Literary Center Proudly Presents More than a Single Story: Ambiguous Loss, Moderated by Carolyn Holbrook

Carolyn Holbrook is a 2015 recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative grant and was the 2010 recipient of the MN Book Awards Kay Sexton Award.  Her personal essays have been published widely, most recently in Blues Vision: African American Writing from Minnesota (MHS Press).  Her book, Ordinary People, Extraordinary Journeys: How the St. Paul Companies Leadership Initiatives in Neighborhoods Program Changed Lives and Communities was published in 2013 & 2015.  She founded SASE: The Write Place in 1993 and served as its Executive/Artistic Director until 2006, when she spearheaded its merger with Intermedia Arts.  In 2005, she designed the Givens Foundation for African American Literature’s writers-in-the-schools program. She is the founder of the writing group, Twin Cities Black Women Writing  She teaches at Hamline University and Minneapolis Community & Technical College.

This allows our guests to socialize with and interrogate each other, while deciphering real life-based clues. At the end of the night, prizes are awarded to the Top Sleuth who solves the crime!

Join us for a FREE musical open house for children 8 and under! At a MacPhail Free Family Music Series event, you can enjoy sample music classes for children, instrument exploration, arts and crafts and a live performance by a featured guest – with snacks and refreshments!

Peter and the Wolf is a symphonic tale for children by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. It’s a one-movement narrated story with the characters being represented by a different instrument of the orchestra. This arrangement is based on the original one-piano arrangement made by the composer. In the spring, our Musical Trolley students will learn the tale of Peter and the Wolf as an introduction to all of the Orchestral Instruments!

January Sip of Science - A New Tool for Monitoring Harmful Algae Concentrations using Multi-Satellite Observations

Toxic freshwater harmful algal blooms (HAB) are a growing global public and ecosystem health concern, including in our own Minnesota freshwater lakes and rivers. Occurrences of HAB on the surface of warm, nutrient-rich freshwater systems are spatially variable and highly transient. The ephemeral and often remote nature of HAB makes timely in situ monitoring difficult and expensive. Satellites provide the possibility of consistent, long-term, global observations that are available freely and publicly, but estimating the extent and timing of HAB using satellites is no easy task. This presentation addresses these problems using a framework that combines available multi-satellite, multi-sensor observations with onsite field measurements. The goal is to retrieve and monitor real-time HAB concentrations in lakes with similar characteristics and without previous field monitoring. Such a tool can be used to better identify and predict the rise of and concentrations of HAB in our waterways.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Abigail Tomasek, Anne Wilkinson, Maria Del Carmen Garcia De La Serrana Lozano, and Zeinab Takbiri are all PhD students at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, studying water resources and civil engineering. Together they put together the above proposal and submitted it to the regional Central States Water Environmental Association (CSWEA)’s design competition in Spring 2016. Upon winning that contest, they presented their work at the annual national WEFTEC 2016 conference in September 2016, again placing first!
