Paul C N Mellblom, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, a Principal at MS&R, will lead a discussion about design potential for the new stadium district. Now that the stadium design process is underway, we as a community need to focus more consciously on the area surrounding the new stadium. Paul will examine four very different examples of successful urban design in North America. Through such community education efforts Paul is hopeful Minneapolis can realize our collective, highest ideals for this emerging district, transforming it from a collection of surface parking lots into a vital extension of downtown Minneapolis, a connector uniting the Mill District and Eliot Park, and a conduit between downtown and the Cedar Riverside Neighborhood.
Cost: $15/per person for EDC members and their guests; cash, check or pre-paid lunch ticket.
Please RSVP by Monday, January 14, to EDC Executive Coordinator Christie Rock (info@edcmpls.org).(612) 359-0601

Time: 6:00pm-7:00pm
Location: Uptown Theatre, 2906 Hennepin Avenue (map)
Originally built in 1916, the Uptown Theatre was modernized in 1939 by the architectural team of Liebenberg and Kaplan in the Streamline Moderne style. It was designated a local landmark in 1990. After years of use, several remodelings, and minimal general maintenance, the Uptown Theatre was in need of repair when new building owners took over in 2009. In addition, changes in theater technology and usage required the long-term tenant, Landmark Theatres, to update interior spaces.
MacDonald & Mack Architects worked with the owner to develop an exterior restoration plan which included masonry, tower sign, and marquee repairs in addition to replacement of non-historic storefronts. On the interior, Landmark Theatres wanted to decrease their rental space providing the owner with an opportunity to expand the retail spaces flanking the main entrance, improve accessibility, and update restrooms. Remaining character-defining interior elements – such as the open lobby and mezzanine relationship, re-created Acousti-Celotex murals, and light fixtures – were preserved although the stairs to the balcony and mezzanine were relocated to accommodate retail expansion. Landmark Theatres also took advantage of the remodeling to update interior finishes, install more comfortable seating, replace projection equipment, and address ticketing and concession deficiencies in the main lobby and mezzanine level.

Minneapolis Riverfront Then and Now, 1858 and 2008 Opening January 15, 2013
Fee: Free
Photographer Jerry Mathiason and Mill City Museum have embarked on a project to document change on the Minneapolis riverfront, selecting historic photos from the city's beginnings in the 1850s and 1860s and shooting photographs of the modern landscape from the same vantage point.
The pairs of then and now photographs reveal the dramatic changes to the city over the past 150 years, including the disappearance of St. Anthony Falls, changes in transportation, bridge collapses past and present, the growth of a small village into a major city, and continually evolving uses of the Mississippi River. The exhibit is supported by a grant from the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board.
The exhibit is located in the museum’s central Mill Commons, and is free and open to the public during regular museum hours through May 12, 2013.

Graywolf Press Publication Launch with Dobby Gibson
Join us for a public launch of Dobby Gibson’s second collection of poetry, It Becomes You.
Meditative, lyrical, aphoristic, and always served with wry wit, the poems in Dobby Gibson’s It Becomes You explore the divergent conditions by which we’re perpetually defined—the daily weather, the fluctuations of the Dow, the growth of a cancer cell, the politics of the day. What surrounds us becomes us, Gibson suggests, in a book that will ultimately become you.
“Dobby Gibson’s poetry . . . is equal parts tender, triumphant, exhilarating, disturbing, and thought provoking: it’s fantastic.”—The Corresponder.
