As our world continues to become more globalized and populated, we see rising susceptibility to epidemics and even worldwide pandemics. Ironically, a pandemic on the scale of the 1918 flu that killed more than hundred million people would be deadlier today, despite a century of medical advances. With recent outbreaks of Zika and Ebola in our national conversation, we can see how unprepared we are for disease outbreaks. What can we do? What must be done to limit exposure and contain outbreaks in real-time? Join us as  Dr. Osterholm discusses the why we are so vulnerable today to infectious diseases and what we must do to be better prepared. He will discuss the nine point Crisis Agenda to respond to the current preparedness crisis. He details this agenda in his soon-to-be published book, Deadliest Enemy: A War Against Killer Germs.

ABOUT THIS MONTH'S SPEAKER

Dr. Osterholm is Regents Professor, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, a professor in the Technological Leadership Institute, College of Science and Engineering, and an adjunct professor in the Medical School, all at the University of Minnesota. He is also a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and the Council of Foreign Relations and a former member of the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity. The author of more than 315 papers and abstracts, including 21 book chapters, Dr. Osterholm is a frequently invited guest lecturer on the topic of epidemiology of infectious diseases around the world. He serves on the editorial boards of nine journals and he is a reviewer for 24 additional journals.

December 12, 2016, Monday - NT Live: War Horse at St. Anthony Main Theatre,

Time: 7:00pm

Location: St. Anthony Main Theatre, 115 Main Street SE

NT Live: War Horse

At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage. War Horse is an unforgettable theatrical event which takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France.

NT Live is a groundbreaking initiative of London's National Theatre that broadcasts the world's finest stage performances to cinema screens in 22 countries around the globe. Through a partnership with the Film Society of Minneapolis/St. Paul, National Theatre Live has moved from the Guthrie across the river to the Film Society's St. Anthony Main Theatre. December 11, 2016, Sunday - Live Music at Aster Cafe

Time: 8:000pm $5

Location: Aster Cafe, 125 Main Street SE

Tonight:  Daniel Schwartz + Gabriel Andrews (Finger-Style Acoustic Folk)

Daniel Schwartz: Starting at the very beginning, his dad’s interest in The Grand Ole Opry and his mom’s fondness for American Bandstand immersed Dan Schwartz in a wide variety of great music. This influence resonates in the range of music he composes, records and performs today in his solo work and with group: The Neighborhood Trio. Dan has written and released nine CDs and has been featured on several internationally released acoustic guitar compilations including Narada Records Masters of Acoustic Guitar. His recordings have earned him a nomination for guitarists of the year (Minnesota Music Academy) and local Folk/roots album of the year (Mpls. St Paul Magazine). He has a new solo CD in the works – a collection of finger-style guitar tunes played on harp guitar and acoustic lap steel, to be released in fall 2016.

Gabriel Andrews is an emerging Australian acoustic guitarist, taking first prize in the 2014 Wilson Centre International Guitar Competition (Milwaukee, USA), and opening for Canadian Guitarist Jesse Cook in the evening showcase. 2015 saw Gabriel complete a Master of Music at the Peck School of the Arts, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, place third in the Kentucky International Home of the Legends Thumb-picking Championship, and reach the semi-final round of the ISC instrumental category for his composition “Here & Now.” The afore mentioned piece was recorded on his first solo album Pathways (2013), released at the Blue Mountains Music Festival in Sydney, Australia.
